Nowhere to hide for Indonesian woman in T'ganu immigration sweep
KUALA TERENGGANU: An Indonesian woman's attempt to hide under a bed to evade arrest failed after being spotted by enforcement officers from the Terengganu Immigration Department (JIM).
Terengganu JIM director Mohd Yusri Mohd Nor said the woman in her 30s was among 11 illegal immigrants arrested in Ops Sapu raids carried out in the Kemaman and Kuala Terengganu districts yesterday.
He said the woman was arrested at a house in Bandar Baru Kijal in Kemaman for overstaying after her last line of defence included a marriage certificate which could not be authenticated.
'During the raid, a man in the house claimed to be living alone but his deception was exposed after enforcement officers found women's clothing in a room.
'Upon checking, we discovered a woman hiding under a bed. The couple then showed a marriage certificate, but its validity could not be confirmed because it was not issued by an authoritative religious office in Malaysia,' he said in a statement today.
Mohd Yusri said that apart from that hide-and-seek episode, the immigration party also arrested four Bangladeshis, three Indonesians. and two Thais aged between five and 49 years old in raids at seven premises.
According to him, all the detainees were taken to the Ajil Immigration Depot for further investigation under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
In addition, a notice was issued to a local man to appear at the state JIM office to assist in investigations under the same act.

He added that inexperience, poor bus handling skills, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs also contributed to the incidents. Of the total accidents, 104 occurred in 2023, 61 so far in 2024, and 38 in the first five months of this year. Mechanical issues such as sudden brake or steering failure, worn-out tyres, or non-functioning lights were also identified as causes. 'Some accidents happened due to pressure from operators chasing tight schedules, with some buses not undergoing proper checks before departure,' Mohd Yusri said. He also cited poor road conditions, bad weather, overcrowded buses, and weak company oversight as contributing factors.

Embrace diversity as a strength, not a source of division
KUCHING: Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people. 'Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape. 'Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia,' he said. Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here tonight, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
