MICHAEL O'BRIEN, A survivor of child sexual abuse who famously tackled the government during a televised debate in 2009, has died.
He passed away peacefully at his daughter Geraldine's home yesterday at the age of 92.
Michael O'Brien, who previously served as Lord Mayor of Clonmel in 1993, was a member of a live studio audience for RTÉ's Questions and Answers programme in 2009.
As a child he had spent eight years in St Joseph's Industrial School, also known as Ferryhouse, in Co Tipperary where he was raped and severely beaten.
He spoke out following the publication of the Ryan report, which had examined child sexual abuse in Church-led institutions.
The report came a decade after the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse was commissioned by the government in 1999.
Addressing then-Minister for Transport and Fianna Fáil TD Noel Dempsey, O'Brien detailed his own experiences with the commission, which was published a week before the broadcast.

O'Brien asked Dempsey if the government would freeze the assets of religious institutions if they didn't pay more into the Redress Board Fund, which had been a topical issue at the time.
Dempsey replied that 'it's not a power that the government has'.
'The constitution protects the right to private property,' he said, adding that it wasn't an option for them.
In a passionate response to Dempsey, O'Brien told the panel that his account of being raped and beaten had been questioned at the commission of investigation into institutional child abuse by the barristers and judges, and the effect that had on him.
He said that he had attempted to take his own life after spending five days at the commission.
'They brought a man over from Rome, 90 odd years of age, to tell me I was telling lies, that I wasn't beaten for an hour non-stop by two of them from head to toe without a shred of cloth on my body,' O'Brien told Dempsey.
Shortly after he spoke out, presenter John Bowman said that his speech was the most memorable moment of the show in 23 years.
Speaking on an RTÉ documentary filmed years after the programme, O'Brien said that he had 'no idea' what he was going to say until he saw the minister.

O'Brien is predeceased by his wife Mary. His funeral will take place tomorrow morning at St. Mary's Church in Clonmel.

New Government taskforce to devise plan to tackle Ireland's sky-high energy bills
A new Government taskforce will draw up an interim plan on ways to ease energy costs for households. Minister for climate, energy and the environment Darragh O'Brien this week chaired the first meeting of the new National Energy Affordability Taskforce, which aims to tackle the sky-high energy costs for consumers in Ireland. The Taoiseach has previously signalled an end to energy credits, which saw all households receive money off their electricity bills in previous years, with no plans to include it in the next Budget. New research has revealed that Ireland is the second most expensive country in the EU, with households here having some of the most expensive energy bills in Europe. 'I understand that many families and businesses are feeling the pressure of current energy prices,' Mr O'Brien said. 'We need to adopt policies which will benefit consumers in the near term and implement reforms to ensure that energy system costs are fairly distributed in the years ahead.' As well as measures to include in Budget 2026, the taskforce has also been asked to identify structural reforms that could be made in the Irish energy sector and to publish a new national energy affordability plan. Included on the taskforce are civil servants from several government departments as well as representatives from the energy regulator, ESB Networks and Eirgrid. Mr O'Brien added: 'The taskforce will be a crucial element of the Government's efforts to improve national competitiveness, protect the most vulnerable within society from rising energy costs and ensure that Irish consumers benefit from the energy transition.' Focus Ireland initiative Separately, Friday saw the announcement of a new arrangement between Bord Gáis and the homeless charity Focus Ireland for some tenants to receive free hot water through surplus renewable energy. The EnergyCloud initiative has seen 45 smart devices installed in Focus Ireland homes in Finglas and Dungarvan. The devices will automatically trigger hot water production when surplus wind energy is available that will reduce waste and cut energy bills.

On the same day police were set to put a closure order on the building, firefighters had been called to the property after Peter Heron tried to burn the house down. The 43-year-old was jailed for 28 months after he used a blowtorch and had the gas turned on in while other tenants were still inside. In 2017, "rogue landlady" Claydon was also found guilty of allowing the property to be occupied - despite a prohibition order banning people from living there. Newton Abbot Magistrates' Court heard that residents and police officers had seen people on the site. The fire service had entered the property in November 2016 to rescue an occupant, thought to be aged in his 40s, during a fire in which a dog died. The former multiple-occupancy house has been described by local police as "a blot on the landscape". Council planners gave the nod to convert the crime-hit derelict home into flats in 2020. Work is now underway to breathe new life into the sordid site. At a planning meeting, Councillor Barbara Lewis said the property had been the source of problems for residents and the development would improve and regenerate the area.
