MICHAEL O'BRIEN, A survivor of child sexual abuse who famously tackled the government during a televised debate in 2009, has died.
He passed away peacefully at his daughter Geraldine's home yesterday at the age of 92.
Michael O'Brien, who previously served as Lord Mayor of Clonmel in 1993, was a member of a live studio audience for RTÉ's Questions and Answers programme in 2009.
As a child he had spent eight years in St Joseph's Industrial School, also known as Ferryhouse, in Co Tipperary where he was raped and severely beaten.
He spoke out following the publication of the Ryan report, which had examined child sexual abuse in Church-led institutions.
The report came a decade after the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse was commissioned by the government in 1999.
Addressing then-Minister for Transport and Fianna Fáil TD Noel Dempsey, O'Brien detailed his own experiences with the commission, which was published a week before the broadcast.

O'Brien asked Dempsey if the government would freeze the assets of religious institutions if they didn't pay more into the Redress Board Fund, which had been a topical issue at the time.
Dempsey replied that 'it's not a power that the government has'.
'The constitution protects the right to private property,' he said, adding that it wasn't an option for them.
In a passionate response to Dempsey, O'Brien told the panel that his account of being raped and beaten had been questioned at the commission of investigation into institutional child abuse by the barristers and judges, and the effect that had on him.
He said that he had attempted to take his own life after spending five days at the commission.
'They brought a man over from Rome, 90 odd years of age, to tell me I was telling lies, that I wasn't beaten for an hour non-stop by two of them from head to toe without a shred of cloth on my body,' O'Brien told Dempsey.
Shortly after he spoke out, presenter John Bowman said that his speech was the most memorable moment of the show in 23 years.
Speaking on an RTÉ documentary filmed years after the programme, O'Brien said that he had 'no idea' what he was going to say until he saw the minister.
"And I knew then now or never...", Michael O'Brien explains why he spoke out on Questions & Answers in 2009.

O'Brien is predeceased by his wife Mary. His funeral will take place tomorrow morning at St. Mary's Church in Clonmel.

In an interview last year, Hutch claimed the probe was being orchestrated by the Gardai to prevent him standing in the election. Advertisement He denied any wrongdoing when he returned back to BACK HOME FOR DAIL RUN Hutch ran for a Irish director The My Left Foot director was following Hutch with a camera crew as part of a documentary he is making about the election and the gang boss. A trailer on the life story of the gangster, made by the award-winning producer and director, was sent to the global network for consideration earlier this year. Both Netflix and Sky have indicated to Sheridan they are interested in The Monk's rags-to-riches life story. The director has made a trailer on the proposed real-life story and it is being sent to them. Earlier this year a source told us: 'Gerry gave Jim his full co-operation and has given him several hours of taped interviews. Some of the stuff he spoke about is incredible. 'However, some clips may have to be refilmed because they are now outdated and have been overtaken by (recent) events. 'There will be huge public interest in his story and what he has to say. 'Both Netflix and Sky are now considering it.' Asked why he thinks people backed The Monk at the polls, Jim said: 'I just think it is anger at their position. Years and years of drugs and nothing happening in that community. 'Like some people are trying to help but there has never been, like since Tony Gregory, a cohesive attitude towards it or a focused attitude. 'Sheriff Street, I think that was the one thing they got wrong because it's like a blocked artery down there. 'It's crazy and it's in the shadow of all these IFSC and it's not really a real community. It's just one street now and you would just wish that something good was developed for it.' He has since continued to live between Ireland and Lanzarote. Meanwhile, the Director of Public Prosecutions is weighing up organised crime charges against him here in Ireland. New Government taskforce to devise plan to tackle Ireland's sky-high energy bills

A new Government taskforce will draw up an interim plan on ways to ease energy costs for households. Minister for climate, energy and the environment Darragh O'Brien this week chaired the first meeting of the new National Energy Affordability Taskforce, which aims to tackle the sky-high energy costs for consumers in Ireland. The Taoiseach has previously signalled an end to energy credits, which saw all households receive money off their electricity bills in previous years, with no plans to include it in the next Budget. New research has revealed that Ireland is the second most expensive country in the EU, with households here having some of the most expensive energy bills in Europe. 'I understand that many families and businesses are feeling the pressure of current energy prices,' Mr O'Brien said. 'We need to adopt policies which will benefit consumers in the near term and implement reforms to ensure that energy system costs are fairly distributed in the years ahead.' As well as measures to include in Budget 2026, the taskforce has also been asked to identify structural reforms that could be made in the Irish energy sector and to publish a new national energy affordability plan. Included on the taskforce are civil servants from several government departments as well as representatives from the energy regulator, ESB Networks and Eirgrid. Mr O'Brien added: 'The taskforce will be a crucial element of the Government's efforts to improve national competitiveness, protect the most vulnerable within society from rising energy costs and ensure that Irish consumers benefit from the energy transition.' Focus Ireland initiative Separately, Friday saw the announcement of a new arrangement between Bord Gáis and the homeless charity Focus Ireland for some tenants to receive free hot water through surplus renewable energy. The EnergyCloud initiative has seen 45 smart devices installed in Focus Ireland homes in Finglas and Dungarvan. The devices will automatically trigger hot water production when surplus wind energy is available that will reduce waste and cut energy bills.

Urban explorers found boxes piled high with sordid images of a blonde girl with a group of men at the abandoned Victorian villa. At several points in the video, they remark to one another that many of the items are not suitable to be shown on YouTube. They pull out a variety of porn magazines from piles of rubbish on the floors and tables, including a copy of Loaded's 'Big Sexy Orgy' from 2003. The house - now being turned into 14 flats - was the scene of a gruesome murder in 2000. Mann later dumped the body at a nearby dairy depot. He was jailed for life. The homeowner Angela Claydon, who was the girlfriend of Mann at the time, was also convicted of trying to cover up the crime and helping the killer flee the country. She was jailed for nine months following the trial in 2002. The house was closed by cops in 2010 following complaints from neighbours about drug-taking, prostitution and anti-social behaviour. Residents reported seeing people urinating and defecating in the grounds outside the house. 7 Dad-of-three David Maher was killed in the property after he was hit over the head with a monkey wrench Credit: YouTube 7 The house - now being turned into 14 flats - was the scene of a gruesome murder Credit: YouTube 7 Urban explorers found boxes piled high with sordid images of girls with groups of men Credit: YouTube It was the first home in Paignton to be the subject of a closure order. On the same day police were set to put a closure order on the building, firefighters had been called to the property after Peter Heron tried to burn the house down. The 43-year-old was jailed for 28 months after he used a blowtorch and had the gas turned on in while other tenants were still inside. In 2017, "rogue landlady" Claydon was also found guilty of allowing the property to be occupied - despite a prohibition order banning people from living there. Newton Abbot Magistrates' Court heard that residents and police officers had seen people on the site. The fire service had entered the property in November 2016 to rescue an occupant, thought to be aged in his 40s, during a fire in which a dog died. The former multiple-occupancy house has been described by local police as "a blot on the landscape". Council planners gave the nod to convert the crime-hit derelict home into flats in 2020. Work is now underway to breathe new life into the sordid site. At a planning meeting, Councillor Barbara Lewis said the property had been the source of problems for residents and the development would improve and regenerate the area. She added: 'All the residents of Keysfield Road will be delighted.' 7 Council planners gave the nod to convert the crime-hit derelict home into flats in 2020 Credit: YouTube
