Survey finds Fort Regent plans backed by public
Plans to regenerate Fort Regent have been backed by 89% of people who responded to an independent survey on the site.
Conducted by research company 4insight, the survey captured feedback from more than 6,000 islanders and visitors, including students from all secondary schools, organisers said.
The research explored community perceptions of the proposals to regenerate Fort Regent into a site for leisure, socialising and entertainment.
Minister for Infrastructure Constable Andy Jehan said the response to the survey was "remarkable" and showed people were ready "for this transformation".
The £110m government proposal includes a 2,500-seat theatre, a 12-lane bowling alley and a six-screen cinema, which would be relocated from the waterfront.
There would also be a play area, virtual golf, e-gaming zones and a facility for climbing and bouldering, as well as places to eat and drink.
The survey found 89% of people aged 16 and over were satisfied with the proposed new activities at the site.
While that figure rose to 94% for people aged between 11 and 16 years old.
The survey asked responders to rate some of the planned features out of 10, with the concert hall having the highest rank of 8.7.
Improving accessibility was highlighted as a key priority, with 98% of respondents agreeing that better links from town to Fort Regent were important.
Some 91% of respondents backed the plans for the site to include a cable car link.
"With nearly 90% satisfaction across the board, and even higher among our young people, it shows there is a strong desire for a new era at the Fort," said Jehan.
"This vision has been shaped by the community, and it's encouraging to see such widespread support."
He added: "We now have a mandate to move forward confidently, creating a vibrant, inclusive and accessible destination that meets the needs of future generations while respecting the fort's historic significance."
Concerns were raised about the future of sports clubs currently based at the site at a public meeting hosted by site developers the Jersey Development Company in April.
Jehan said he had taken the various concerns raised on board and would be looking for solutions.

Bradford City AFC 'potluck' raises funds for Refugee Action
The charitable arm of Bradford City AFC hosted an event recently in support of refugees and asylum seekers. The Bradford City AFC Community Foundation hosted the 'potluck' event on Tuesday (June 17), at its City Hub. The gathering, which took place during Refugee Week and which raised funds for the charity Refugee Action, brought together refugees, asylum seekers, and support organisations from across the Bradford district. Ian Ormondroyd, chief executive of the Bradford City AFC Community Foundation, said: "We were absolutely delighted to run such a well-attended event, and welcome refugees and asylum seekers from across Bradford and the wider district, as well as our fellow support organisations, under one roof. "We're proud of the money we have raised for Refugee Action, a fantastic organisation, but are equally pleased to have connected numerous local organisations with the people they can directly support, and one another." The Bradford City AFC Community Foundation also wished to highlight its Community Ticket scheme, which offers discounts on tickets to Bradford City AFC home league games for refugees and asylum seekers. Refugee Action, which was founded in 1981, provides advice and support for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

University of Reading looking for residents to join steering group
The University of Reading is looking for two local residents to join its community engagement steering group. The group, launched two years ago, is chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Van de Noort. It meets three times a year to provide strategic oversight of the university's community engagement activities. Professor Van de Noort said: "A key part of our university strategy is to be engaged with our local community. "This means working in partnership with local residents to understand how we as a university can best serve our community." The outgoing members, Andrea Malcolm and Hiral Patel, have helped to make the university campuses more accessible to all community groups during their two-year membership. They have also been instrumental in launching the community champions network. Andrea said: "I wanted to make a positive difference where I live. "Being part of the steering group allowed me to support community-focused events and projects that promote partnership, awareness, and local opportunities." Hiral added: "I joined the steering group to strengthen the partnership between local communities and the university, motivated by my deep connection to both." The university is inviting expressions of interest for the role by Friday, June 27. No previous experience of being part of a steering group or working with the university is required, but strong local connections, a good understanding of the area, and a passion for community engagement are essential. The appointments will last for the 2025/26 academic year, with the possibility of extension, and travel expenses will be paid.
