Scientists make stunning discovery hidden along 2,000-mile stretch of ancient Antarctic mountains: 'More dynamic … history than previously recognized'

Novel findings from ​​University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, geologist Timothy Paulsen and University of Colorado, Boulder, thermochronologist Jeff Benowitz have shed light on the complex and enigmatic history of Antarctica's ice sheets, The Debrief reported.
Paulsen and Benowitz's research will appear in the August edition of the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters. The study builds on a broader understanding of Antarctica's bedrock geology and introduces new insights.
The Antarctic ice sheets "today blanket and mask the bedrock geology of Antarctica," the study's authors began. "However, when this bedrock landscape formed over many regions of Antarctica and how it has influenced ice sheet evolution remain as unresolved problems."
Paulsen, Benowitz, and their research team set out to glean insights from a mysterious, "hidden" mountain range in Antarctica. Those massive mountains were first discovered during the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901-1904.
"Early exploration of the Antarctic continent revealed a surprising result, a 3,500-kilometer (2,175-mile) long mountain range with peaks over 4,500 meters (2.8 miles) crossing the Antarctic continental interior. This range was known as the 'great Antarctic horst' and is recognized today as the Transantarctic Mountains," Paulsen explained.
Research examined periods of "exhumation" — a term in geology for periods when objects beneath or near the Earth's crust have moved closer to the surface — and their "potential influence on Paleozoic and Cenozoic glacial cycles" on the continent.
The team analyzed an "exceptionally large data set from igneous rocks recovered from the Transantarctic Mountains," uncovering new evidence with respect to glacial cycles.
Their findings hinted at a "much more dynamic Antarctic landscape history than previously recognized," which Paulsen expounded on.
"Our new results suggest Transantarctic Mountain basement rocks experienced several punctuated mountain-building and erosion events, creating surfaces along which ancient rocks are missing. These events are curiously associated with major plate tectonic changes along the margins of Antarctica," he said.
As is often the case, the team indicated that further research could reveal more about the continent's glacial cycles — which in turn can inform our broader knowledge of climate.
An "older geologic history of the continent may have profoundly shaped the patterns of the modern landscape, which likely influenced cycles of glacial advance and retreat, and perhaps evolutionary steps in Earth's global ocean-atmosphere system," Paulsen stated.

Next time you see your baby trying to play or talk, pay close attention — because it may give you a strong clue about how intelligent the kiddo will turn out as an adult, according to a new paper in the journal PNAS. A team of scientists led by the University of Colorado Boulder have found that cognitive tests on babies as young as seven months can anticipate their future performance as 30-year-old adults on intelligence tests. "We certainly do not want to imply that cognition is somehow fixed by seven months old," said first author Daniel Gustavson, an assistant research professor at the university's Institute for Behavioral Genetics, in a statement. "But the idea that a very simple test in infancy can help predict the results of a very complicated cognitive test taken 30 years later is exciting." But all isn't lost if your baby seems slow on the uptake right now: the scientists also determined that environmental factors have an impact on childhood development. The researchers examined data from the Colorado Longitudinal Twin Study, which was started in 1985 and involved more than 1,000 twins who were followed since they were babies in order to study the impact of genes and environment. Previous research has already found that general cognitive ability doesn't shift much after a kid is eight years old or so, but this team wanted to investigate if this was also true starting from when children are very young. The researchers looked at several metrics to assess cognitive ability in babies, such as the focus and vocalization found in baby babbles. From these yardsticks, they determined that two metrics — object novelty and task orientation — strongly predicted the cognitive abilities of the tykes once they hit adulthood. They also compared identical and fraternal twins, from which they determined that 22 percent of the variance in adult cognitive ability was connected with genetic influences present in children three years of age or younger. However, they also found out that environmental influences when a child was one or two years old could explain 10 percent of variability in adult cognitive tests. Antarctic seal populations are drastically declining as the sea ice melts around them, new research has shown. Researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have been monitoring the seal population in the sub-Antarctic since the 1970s, looking in particular at three different seal species in the sub-Antarctic on Signy Island: Weddell seals, Antarctic fur seals and southern elephant seals. Using satellite records from as far back as 1982, the research team compared annual changes in sea ice concentration with seal population counts conducted since 1977. With five decades worth of data spanning a period of long-term warming and temporary cooling between 1998 and 2014, they were able to draw a comprehensive picture of how seal populations react to changing ice conditions, something shorter-term studies would not be able to achieve. The study, published in the scientific journal Global Change Biology, found Weddell seals (leptonychotes weddellii), which rely on stable sea ice to rest, breed and feed, had declined by 54% since 1977. Similarly, Antarctic fur seals (arctocephalus gazella), which breed on land but are affected by food chain shifts, have declined by 47%. The findings challenge previous assumptions that the population in the South Orkneys had stabilised. Southern elephant seals (mirounga leonina), despite sharing similar population trends, presented 'no significant overall long-term decline'. The study serves to emphasise the 'vital importance of long-term ecological monitoring' as well as the interconnectedness between the three species of seal and sea ice conditions. Michael Dunn, lead author of the study, said: 'For once, we're not just predicting how wildlife might respond to shrinking sea ice and environmental shifts, we've had the rare opportunity to confirm it, using solid, long-term data. The emerging picture is deeply concerning.' In light of the BAS's findings, researchers have also raised concerns about how climate breakdown is affecting the Antarctic food web, relied on by all three species.

It has become common for dogs to be used for a variety of behavioral health solutions, including those like post-traumatic stress disorder, for instance. But at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, there is a single dog that is being used in a rather unique way: helping patients with obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD, manage their symptoms. Cate Rush, a social work fellow who works on the campus, has had Otis the Bernese Mountain Dog since her junior year of her undergraduate studies. He's helped in her in a variety of ways throughout her adult life, and she's now using him to help her patients as well. Cate Rush with Otis CBS "I just feel like it's so special that he's able to do something that humans cannot," she said. Otis is a trained therapy dog but works with a specific set of clients. Most of the patients that come see Cate have OCD. "Therapy dogs aren't commonly used for OCD so it's been a bit of a learning experience how to use him," she said. The research on the use of dogs for OCD patients is still evolving, as is most of the research around therapy dogs in general. It's only been since the turn of the 2000s that having dogs used as aids for behavioral health solutions has become more common. But it's rare to see one that is working with OCD patients. Otis is the only dog of his kind on the medical campus in Aurora. Obsessive-compulsive disorder currently affects 2.5% of the United States population and can be treated with what is called exposure and response prevention therapy, or ERPT. It usually involves exposing patients to things that trigger their obsessive behaviors while giving them tools to help prevent them from engaging in their typical compulsions. A 2010 study by the University of Pennsylvania, cited in the National Institute of Health, showed that ERPT can significantly reduce OCD symptoms in up to 80% of patients. CBS That's where Otis comes in. He can help in a variety of ways, as a supportive and helpful sidekick to those being exposed to triggering things or situations or, in some cases, being a walking exposure therapy himself. "There are a lot of patients who might have contamination fears," Rush said, "They can use him in exposure so I've had patients touch his paws or rub his belly." "I had a patient and one of her final exposures in the IOP -- the intensive outpatient program -- was to high five Otis and that was really sweet," she added. While Otis isn't part of any official research at Anschutz just yet, his presence signals an evolving approach to behavioral health solutions. One wag at a time.
