Pahang plans high-tech zone to attract AI and tech investments
KUANTAN: The Pahang government will establish a high-tech zone in the state, dedicated to attracting companies involved in artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and big data.
State Investment, Industrial development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman, Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib, said the initiative aims to draw investments from technology firms to the east coast region.
'The Pahang High-Tech Zone will be developed in the Kuantan area. Should there be any changes to the location, we will make an official announcement. We also aim to attract talent in the AI sector to be part of the ecosystem and support the growth of startup companies we are nurturing in Pahang,' he added.
He said this to reporters after launching the AI for Productivity Transformation and officiating the closing ceremony of the Speed GCPV (Grid-Connected Photovoltaic) programme at the Pahang Skills Development Centre here today.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Nizar expressed hope that Pahang Skills and the Pahang Foundation would collaborate to attract companies and fresh talent in the field of AI to the state.
'We in Pahang must be well-prepared to face both the opportunities and challenges that AI will bring. The state government will also explore potential incentives to encourage more AI companies to establish operations here, rather than limiting their presence to the Klang Valley or other states.
He added that the state government is also exploring the development of floating solar farms, or floating photovoltaics (FPV), as part of its commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
He said the proposed solar farm would be built on a suitable lake or dam site, with the project expected to take two years to complete.
'We need to produce more skilled and knowledgeable technicians in the solar energy sector, both in Pahang and across Malaysia. So far, 288 participants have been trained in this field through the Speed GCPV programme,' he added.

Petrosains Discovery Rover makes exclusive Sabah stop to promote STEM to rural students
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah has been chosen as the first and only state to host the Petrosains Discovery Rover this year, bringing the excitement of hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning directly to communities in remote areas. The Petrosains Discovery Rover, a mobile exhibition truck equipped with interactive STEM exhibits, will tour over nine districts across the state. Petrosains' chief executive officer, Ezarisma Azni Mohamad, said the initiative aims to ignite interest in STEM among students while upskilling teachers with tools and techniques for more engaging classroom delivery. 'Sabah is the first and only state to host the Discovery Rover this year, making this launch especially meaningful. We are committed to empowering students, particularly in rural and underserved areas, through quality STEM education,' he said at the programme's launching ceremony at SJK (C) Kuok Ming in Tawau on Saturday (June 21). He added that the initiative reflects Petrosains' mission as a social impact arm of PETRONAS to democratise access to science and technology education and unlock opportunities for students regardless of geography. The Discovery Rover features engaging activities, including Math Kit, to strengthen numeracy through interactive problem-solving, Drone Challenge to introduce flight principles and basic coding and Carbon-O-Polly, which focuses on carbon literacy and sustainability. Other activities include Da Vinci Bridge, which combines physics and creativity in a challenge, Science Show to demonstrate scientific concepts in fun, accessible ways, and Teachers' Upskilling Sessions, aimed at enhancing classroom STEM delivery techniques. The launch was officiated by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry's deputy permanent secretary II, Syahrin Samsir, on behalf of permanent secretary Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Mohd Kassim. Also present were senior representatives from PETRONAS, the National Science Centre, and Petrosains. SC adds 59 entities to investor alert list in 1Q
KUANTAN: The Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) added 59 names to its Investor Alert List in the first quarter (1Q) of this year, said chairman Datuk Mohammad Faiz Azmi. He said this move is part of ongoing efforts to combat the increasingly rampant scams, alongside blocking fraudulent websites and social media pages. "In 2024, we added 273 names to the Alert List, and in the 1Q this year, we added another 59,' he said during his opening remarks at the launch of the Bersama InvestSmart@Pahang 2025 programme. The event was officiated by Pahang Investment, Industrial Development, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Mohamad Najib. Mohammad Faiz added that the SC also collaborates closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block these deceptive sites. "Last year, we blocked 153 websites and 261 social media pages. In the 1Q, we blocked 29 websites and 91 social media pages. These numbers show how much illicit activity we are fighting daily,' he said. As of May 2025, he said, the SC had received 1,218 complaints and enquiries about scams. Mohammad Faiz also reminded the public to be cautious of scams that claim to be Shariah‑compliant, using religious sentiment to gain trust.
