What if... the season came down to improvement?

As the dust settles on the 2024-25 Premier League season, we have been taking a look at some of the alternative ways the the table could have finished...
Many of us will have been there in school.
It was not always about being the best, but about being better. Not trying to beat the others' scores or times, but about beating your own.

In sport too, it is why personal bests exist. It is a way of measuring your own improvement against what has gone before - we can't all be Usain Bolt and Florence Griffith-Joyner.
So if the Premier League season was all about how you compared to the campaign before, who would have come out on top?
Well, there is one clear winner.
With 29 points more than they had in 2023-24, Nottingham Forest would have been lifting that trophy.
They may not have finished the season quite as they hoped having spent so much time in the Champions League spots, but having narrowly avoided relegation a year ago, this shows the sheer scale of the improvement this term.

Their nearest challenger on this basis would have been Brentford.
With 56 points, they were three points short of their best ever Premier League tally, but having flirted with relegation last time out, it made for a more enjoyable season this time around.
Brighton, Bournemouth and Fulham may have just missed out on European adventures in the real league, but they are also teams who can be happy with the improvements they are showing as now well-established top-flight sides.
And despite the chaotic nature of Chelsea since the new ownership came in, they too can look to steady progress.
At the other end of the scale (or table), it is a very different picture.

Many question whether the traditional 'big six' teams is still relevant, given how others have broken that mould in recent years.
But if the season was based on improvement, four of those six would have been at the bottom.
Tottenham dropped-off in the league nearly as much as Forest improved. Manchester City had a high bar to reach, but a torrid spell proved costly. Manchester United have set multiple unwanted club records, while Arsenal struggled to maintain a real challenge for the title.
They say beware the wounded tiger, and it is hard to see all these sides having the same difficulties next season, but they will not have it all their own way with those teams that are on the up.

John Stones has committed his future to Manchester City after admitting he questioned whether there was a way back from some 'dark days' during an injury-ravaged season. The England international defender is into his tenth season at Manchester City but foot and hamstring injuries plagued him last season. 'I'm here, I want to stay here, I love it,' Stones said. 'I'm here to help the team. I don't know what's been said or speculated, but I hope that kind of shuts it down.' Stones made several comebacks last season but each time his body broke down. The last time he made an appearance was in February when he started the second-leg of the Champions League play-off match against Real Madrid but only lasted eight minutes before going down again. 'There's been points where you think, you've been giving all this effort, you dedicate all your life, especially how I approach or go about my life, and football, I give everything, on and off the pitch to be here or be ready to play games and those are the dark days,' he said. 'I think everyone's been through them and think, 'Why is this happening?'. You wish it would go a different path, but like I said, it's self-doubt, there's a lot of things 'All of us have been through different upbringings and challenges through life and what did we do within those situations, was it fight or was it give up? I was a fighter from a young age, in difficult moments, you have to look at the bigger picture and realise what are your morals, what you believe in, and fight to make it worthwhile.' Stones turned 31 last month and is now one of the most senior players with 277 appearances for the club. He is an experienced international player but he found the difficulty of diagnosing and treating his injury problems mentally challenging. 'I don't know what the reason was and we've sat with the medical staff, sports science, to try and figure out why,' he said. 'Some things can't be explained, which is even more testing mentally when there's not really an answer. Advertisement 'I've been unlucky with some of the injuries that I've had, they were very rare last season, after speaking to specialists. Sometimes I think, why has it happened to me? But I've got to deal with that and move forward and try to adapt with how my body's adapting. 'I think we all self-doubt as players and feel things and we want to get back as quick as possible. 'Maybe that's a downfall sometimes that you try to push too soon. Definitely family, I think that's my biggest thing, being around them and having their support. You can feel very lonely at times when you're training by yourself and that's the difficult part of it, being in a team sport, not training with the team when you run out of the pitch in your rehab. 'So a lot of things that you've got to get used to and deal with and try and set yourself goals to come back and it's been a challenge. I am over that hurdle.' City have signed Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, adding to a central defensive group that includes Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake. Some players and managers have complained about the expanded Club World Cup adding more games to an already packed calendar but Stones is viewing it as an opportunity to re-assert himself. 'I feel great, I'm back fit, ready to help the team when called upon. I think this season I've got to look more detailed into training, things that I can do off the pitch that I can sustain playing a lot more games. 'It's difficult when you're injured, you almost work longer and more, so from that aspect I know the guys mentally and physically have had such a long season. 'I suppose mentally for me it's been difficult dealing with the injuries and the process, but now I've put that behind me and used this as a mini introduction back into before the new season and another trophy for us to hopefully win and get some game time.'

Suit claims a Miami staff member and a prominent alumnus met with Lucas and his family and offered him money to transfer. 5. SOCCER: U.S. men calm doubts, sail into Gold Cup knockout quarters: The USMNT and coach Mauricio Pochettino were under fire with five straight losses in the runup to the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament, but advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday with a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia that followed a 5-0 spank of Trinidad & Tobago. [The Saudis were neither from North or Central America or the Caribbean when last I checked a map but are guests of CONCACAF.] The Americans face Haiti in a meaningless group-stage match Sunday before awaiting their yet-unknown quarters foe. 6. POLITICS: U.S. immigration crackdown seeping into sports: We have seen it during games in the FIFA Club World Cup including at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, with a presence by U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) there lloking for undocumented immigrants. Now, federal agents with the Department of Homeland Security set up outside Dodger Stadium this week, sparking outrage on social media and more protests against immigration enforcement in L.A. The Dodgers say they denied the feds access to the stadium's parking lot. 7. DOLPHINS: Ready or not, football's near as Fins set camp dates: Players will report July 22 for start of full preseason training camp, with the first of 10 open-to-the-public practices on July 26. Miami will have joint practices with their three preseason foes prior to those games Aug. 10 at Chicago, Aug. 16 at Detroit and home Aug. 23 vs. Jacksonville, with Fins' NFL regular season opening Sept. 7 in Indianapolis. You take the bright spots where you find them ... like manager Clayton McCullough being named by the Dodgers' Dave Roberts to his coaching staff for the upcoming All-Star Game. 10. NFL: Time to wonder ... does football even need cheerleaders?: In the second season of the Netflix series, 'America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders,' it is revealed the women will be getting a 400 percent rise, after a previous hike to $400 per game. For me, cheerleading, like beauty pageants, is a rather antiquated throwback. Almost quaint. It leads one to wonder if NFL teams benefit from cheerleader squads. I have never met a sports fans who was not adept at cheering and needed leading in that category. Almost a quarter of teams, seven of 32, presently do not have cheerleaders. Trend?
