Jamie Lever Recalls Being Called ‘Chudail', Trolled For Skin Tone: ‘Asked To Use Ubtan'
Last Updated:
Jamie Lever opens up about being trolled for her skin tone, called 'chudail,' and advised to 'become fair.' She also shares how she embraced her curves.
In a deeply personal and powerful revelation, actress and comedian Jamie Lever has opened up about the years of online and offline abuse she has endured for her appearance — especially for her skin tone and body type. In a candid conversation with Hauterrfly, Jamie, the daughter of legendary comic actor Johnny Lever, shared how she was subjected to relentless trolling and unsolicited advice in her formative years, all for simply looking the way she does.
'I get so many comments — 'Kaali hai, chudail lagti hai, chudail jaise hasti hai, you are ugly, you won't get work in the industry, tu marr kyu nahi jaati…' These are the kinds of messages I've received all my life," Jamie revealed during the podcast. Her words shine a harsh light on the colourism that remains deeply entrenched in Indian society and the entertainment industry.
She continued, 'Growing up, I was constantly told to apply ubtans and turmeric to become fair. People genuinely believed that my success depended on my fairness. Colourism is such a huge issue in our country, and it starts young."
The trolling wasn't limited to just her skin tone. Jamie also opened up about struggling with body image issues as a child. Being plump and curvy invited a different kind of judgment — often from those closest to her. 'Even my own family asked me to cover my posterior because I have a bigger hip. I have a pear-shaped body — what do I do about it? I would only wear long kurtas and dresses to keep my lower body hidden. It took years before I could truly embrace my body and curves."
Despite the negativity, Jamie has carved a strong niche for herself in the world of entertainment. Widely known for her razor-sharp wit and mimicry skills, she is a respected name in stand-up comedy and social media circuits. From viral Instagram sketches to roles in Bollywood films like Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, Housefull 4, Bhoot Police, Yaatris, and Crakk, Jamie has shown resilience and versatility.
By speaking her truth, Jamie Lever is not only reclaiming her narrative but also encouraging many others to embrace their individuality in a world obsessed with appearance.
