Man accused of impersonating Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya in court
A man who allegedly impersonated Hawks head Lt-Gen Godfrey Lebeya appeared before the Hatfield magistrate's court on Monday on a charge of impersonating a police officer.
Thabo Theletsane, 42, was arrested on Saturday by the Hawks' national serious corruption investigation unit in Petrus Steyn in the Free State. He is also charged with fraud.
In October last year, the accused allegedly contacted a prominent South African businessman residing in Gauteng via WhatsApp falsely claiming to be Lebeya.
Using a profile picture and personal details resembling those of Lebeya, the accused allegedly deceived the victim. It is alleged the accused claimed the victim's mobile phone had been hacked and, on the pretext of assisting him with a security breach, requested the victim's personal information.
Believing he was communicating with the real national head of the Hawks, the victim provided personal details and contact information of close associates.
'The accused later solicited money, claiming to have successfully 'debugged' the victim's mobile devices. An of more than R100,000 was subsequently paid by the victims,' Hawks spokesperson Brig Thandi Mbambo said.
The case was postponed until Thursday for a bail application and the accused was remanded.
'The community is warned against making payments to police officers as they are not authorised to solicit money for services rendered,' Mbambo said.

Zambian ex-president to be buried in South Africa after funeral row
LUSAKA - The family of Zambia's late president, Edgar Lungu, announced on Friday that he will be buried in South Africa after a row with the Zambian government over its plans for a state funeral. Lungu's family on Wednesday stopped his body from being repatriated from South Africa, where he died in hospital on June 5, after it emerged that President Hakainde Hichilema planned to receive it upon arrival against the late leader's wishes. In response, Hichilema cut short an extended period of national mourning for Lungu, whom he replaced in 2021 after winning elections. Lungu's funeral and burial "will take place here in South Africa, in accordance with the family's wishes for a private ceremony", spokesman Makebi Zulu said in a statement. "The Lungu family continues to seek peace and unity amongst fellow Zambians during this time," the statement said, thanking the South African government for its "non-interference and respect of the... rights of the family". The cause of the former president's death at the age of 68 was not announced but he had been receiving specialised treatment in a clinic in Pretoria, his Patriotic Front party said. He was elected to lead the copper-rich southern African country in 2015 but lost elections six years later to Hichilema, from the United Party for National Development. Since then, his wife and children have been charged with corruption and possession of suspected proceeds of crime in what the family has claimed to be part of a political vendetta. Lungu's daughter Tasila Lungu was arrested in February on money laundering charges. She was previously detained alongside her mother and sister on fraud charges in 2024. Her brother, Dalitso, is also facing corruption charges. An initial seven days of mourning for Lungu was extended by another nine days to end on June 23, the day after the government had scheduled a state funeral for. But Hichilema ended the period of mourning four days early on Thursday in reaction to the family's refusal to allow the body to return.

20 undocumented foreign nationals nabbed at Durban truck depot
DURBAN - Twenty foreign nationals have been arrested during a law enforcement raid at a truck depot in Durban. They're alleged to be undocumented. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli made an unannounced visit to the area following complaints from South African drivers. They raised concerns about their working conditions. Ntuli said some of the suspects arrested on Friday face other criminal charges. ALSO READ: Foreign nationals at Bellville, Wingfield tent sites have refused all offers of help - Hill-Lewis "Some of them you'll find that they have criminal cases apart from going through the processes of deportation, they will have to face those charges first." He said two of those arrested are managers at the depot. "The owners were arrested immediately when we discovered that they have employed undocumented foreign nationals. The next is for yourself as the owner who has also employed them, to be also taken by the police to answer." The arrests come after 135 undocumented migrants were arrested last week in Hammarsdale and Chatsworth.
