Are family dramas losing their charm in Malayalam cinema? Thrillers and action films steal the spotlight
Malayalam cinema, once known for its strong storytelling style, especially in drama genres, has taken a huge deviation in recent times. The majority of the films that have turned out to be successes are either thrillers or highly entertaining comedy-drama films like 'Premalu'. Now, a big question arises. Has the Malayali audience lost touch with enjoying a good family drama movie on the big screens? Or should such films be played safe by releasing on OTT?
'Thudarum's success
Let's start with the most recent example, the Mohanlal starrer 'Thudarum'. The film was promoted as a family drama movie, and it's a known fact that for the same reason, the hype for the movie, even though having Mohanlal and Shobana in the lead, was less compared to the action thriller film 'Empuraan'.

Thudarum | Song - Kondattam
Slowly, after the first show, the initial reviews started pouring in, calling it a 'Drishyam-level' thriller movie. Now the magic happened! The occupancy rates have started soaring along with the box office collections. Keeping the mind that the movie is genuinely good and is receiving magnificent reviews from the audiences, isn't it also true that the interest of the audiences, even the fans, was ignited because the early reviews suggested that it was a thriller rather than a family drama movie?

''Thudarum' comes under family drama' - Tharun Moorthy
Tharun Moorthy, during his promotional interviews, had confirmed that 'Thudarum' is a family drama movie and the audience shouldn't expect anything else from it.
Talking to 'The Cue', the director said, 'But what I am worried about is that we have already fixed a genre for the movie. This comes under family drama. When audiences start deducing a different genre for the movie, I get tense.' He further said, 'When we define a genre and make a movie accordingly, if anything comes beyond that, I cannot accept it—that's my nature.' This was indeed a tactic by the talented director to make the audience keep their hype level in check before watching the movie.
'Home', 'Falimy', and more
A few years back, several family drama movies performed well at the box office and had also received good responses from the audiences once they hit OTT. One such film was the Indrans starrer 'Home'. The Basil Joseph starrer 'Falimy', 'Ponman', and even 'Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil' can also be classified under family movies. But are they all dependent on one factor- comedy or even thrill, not the pure emotions that classic family movies like 'Valsalyam', or even 'Kireedam', exuded?

'Audiences know which film they should go and watch in theatres' - 'ARM' director Jithin Laal
In an exclusive chat with the Tovino Thomas starrer 'ARM' director Jithin Laal, he said that the perspectives and tastes of the audience have changed over time, especially after Covid.
'Audiences know which film they should go and watch in theatres. They need entertainment, and the filmmakers also have an idea of what to deliver to the audiences,' said Jithin during the interview.
No matter what the genre is, according to the director, audiences are in theatres for pure entertainment. 'They need their money's worth. Entertainment is the main aspect they look for when they are paying money to watch a movie in theatres. Right after a movie's trailer is released, they decide whether they should watch the movie in theatres or wait for it's OTT release.'
Theatre experience matters, can family dramas cater to that?
Like what Christopher Nolan said in a media interaction, 'People will always love the feeling of coming together to watch a great story,' watching a movie in a theatre is a combined experience. Earlier, a good story was enough to cater to the needs of a person who watches a movie in the theatre, now it has transformed to another level, they need a wholesome experience from a movie. As long as a movie, no matter whether it is a family drama or a thriller or even a horror film, just like what Jithin Laal said, the majority of the audiences are in for pure entertainment and nothing else.

Rise of 'MAGA Mark'? Why Meta employees 'horrified' as CEO Mark Zuckerberg ditches his T-shirts for luxury jackets, $900K watch
Meta employees are reportedly 'horrified' by CEO Mark Zuckerberg's support for the Trump administration and his new, more conservative avatar. As per a Financial Times report, the billionaire has reportedly undergone a political transformation that has left employees 'grieving' and feeling 'horror and betrayal.' An Unsettling Shift in Workplace Culture More than 40 current and former Meta employees, most of whom requested anonymity, reportedly shared their concerns with FT , painting a grim picture of the internal environment. The culture at Meta, once shaped by Zuckerberg's image as a casual, innovation-driven tech leader, is now seen as shifting toward a space that some insiders feel is more aggressive and ideologically rigid. These employees described the atmosphere as emotionally chaotic, with many staffers feeling alienated by the company's perceived new direction. From Geek Icon to Conservative Symbol Zuckerberg, once known for his low-profile fashion and engineering-centric public persona, is now being linked with far-right media figures and hyper-masculine influencers. He has built friendships with prominent names associated with the "manosphere"—a network of online voices that critique progressive values and emphasize traditional masculinity. UFC president Dana White and podcaster Joe Rogan are reportedly among Zuckerberg's close associates in this ideological space. The CEO's evolving personality has even earned him a satirical nickname among employees: 'MAGA Mark.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 40세 넘고 PC만 있으면? 이 게임 완전 내 거임! Internal Pushback and Tense Exchanges The unease reached a peak during a meeting where Zuckerberg's comments on a Rogan podcast were brought up. In the interview, he called for a boost in 'masculine energy' at the workplace—statements that drew criticism and jokes, including a comedian dubbing him the 'emperor of the Broman Empire.' When employees questioned this ideological turn, Zuckerberg allegedly responded with a brusque dismissal, indicating that dissenting opinions wouldn't be entertained. A Dramatic Image Makeover The Financial Times notes that Zuckerberg's outer transformation has mirrored his political one. He's reportedly traded his trademark plain grey T-shirts for flashier attire—luxurious shearling jackets, gold accessories, and even a high-end $900,000 Greubel Forsey timepiece. The tech mogul has also altered his appearance, reportedly replacing his clean-cut look with a vibrant, styled ginger mullet—an image widely circulated and commented upon in media outlets like The Daily Beast. Possible Role in Trump's Inner Circle Sources also revealed that there have been behind-the-scenes conversations about Zuckerberg potentially joining Trump's advisory panel on science and technology. A political insider told FT that at various functions, former President Donald Trump enjoys showcasing Zuckerberg, suggesting a deepening rapport. Driven by Comparison with Elon Musk? Some Meta staff believe the CEO's transformation may stem from professional rivalry. As Elon Musk continues to be celebrated as an audacious visionary in the tech community, Zuckerberg is reportedly striving to revamp his image to gain similar admiration. According to one insider, the social media magnate has long desired broader public approval—a need that may be influencing his current trajectory.

Salman Khan, better known as the bhaijaan of the industry, has always been known for her strength and swag. The moment you hear his name, the first thing that comes to mind is power, muscular physique, and India's most charming eligible bachelor. However, what a lot of people don't know is that behind this super-beast personality, the actor has been dealing with multiple painful health conditions. Yet, like a true showman, he never lets his pain come to his face and works on the philosophy, 'the show must go on.' The 'Bajarangi Bhaijaan' actor had earlier opened up about dealing with multiple serious conditions, including trigeminal neuralgia, a brain aneurysm, and arteriovenous malformations. More recently, during his appearance on The Kapil Sharma Show, he again referred to his health struggles in a fleeting comment. Here's what Salman Khan said about his health issues It all started with the million-dollar question that has been a friend and a foe of Salman Khan for decades - 'Is there any girl in his life?' On a lighthearted note, Salman replied, there is no one in his life, and in all fairness, he doesn't have the patience to make all those sacrifices and endure the husband-wife quarrels. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo He is at a stage where he enjoys his space, which he wouldn't like to share with anyone. Then he jokingly added, 'Divorces happen over minor things, and on top of that, he takes away half the money. ' Salman continued that the fortune that he had made with so much hard work, despite several health issues, he could not see half of it going away, as it would be difficult to build again. He said, 'So hum ye jitni bhi haddiyan tudva rahe hai, pasliyan toot gayi, trigeminal neuralgia tha uske bawajud kaam kre, aneurysm hai brain me uske bawajud kaam kar rhe hai, AV malformations hai, uske bawajud chal rhe hai.. Action, yaha se kudna, vaha se girna, chalne ko nahi ho rha, dance kr rhe hai…ye sab chal rha hai… or jaha unka mood satka, vo aadha humara le kar chla gya. (So all these bones that have been broken, ribs fractured, had trigeminal neuralgia yet worked, there is an aneurysm in the brain yet we are working, there are AV malformations, yet we are still going on. . Action, jumping from here, falling over there, not even able to walk, still dancing.. all this is going on, and whenever her (in context of a partner) mood snaps, she can leave with half of it.)' Salman Khan's health struggles Reportedly, Salman Khan started having symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia around 2007. Back then, he was shooting for 'Partner'. He endured severe pain for several years and had to work through it to shoot his movie. In 2011, he went to the United States for surgery.
