Senior citizen in Melaka claims trial to sexually assaulting teen

PETALING JAYA : A senior citizen was charged in the Ayer Keroh sessions court today with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl two years ago.
Utusan Malaysia reported that Jaafar Taib, 70, pleaded not guilty before judge Haderiah Siri.
He was charged with committing the offence at a house in Klebang, Melaka Tengah, at around 2pm in early February 2023.
The charge was made under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 for sexual assault, which provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and a whipping upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nazrin Ali Rahim did not propose bail, but suggested RM20,000 and other additional conditions should the court exercise its discretion to offer any.
Lawyer Kent Tan, representing the accused, pleaded for a lower amount, saying his client had heart disease, diabetes, and five children.
The judge set bail at RM10,000 with one surety, as well as the additional conditions that the accused surrender his passport to the court, report once a month to a police station, and refrain from disturbing the victim and witnesses.
The court set July 16 for re-mention of the case and the handover of documents.

They are the so-called 'groom' who is believed to be behind the event, 22 years old and 'presumed to be British', and a Latvian woman, 24, said a source close to the case. However, the other two people detained – a 41-year-old Ukrainian woman, and a 55-year-old Latvian man – were released. The investigations, including a medical examination of the nine-year-old girl, a Ukrainian national, found that 'she had not been subjected to any violence or coercive acts,' the prosecutor's office said. According to the Le Parisien daily, which first reported the incident, a man had several weeks previously hired the Disneyland Paris complex for a sum of 130,000 euros (US$150,000) for several hours before it opened to the public. Staff were astonished when the nine-year-old appeared wearing high heels on Saturday morning, barely able to stand in the elaborate footwear, and they alerted the authorities, it said. The paper said the man who organised the event had submitted false documents concerning his identity and Disneyland filed a complaint. Home Ministry to investigate false IGP infographic, Saifuddin Nasution warns of serious consequences for misleading reporting
PUTRAJAYA, June 23 — The Home Ministry (KDN) will investigate a recent erroneous infographic on the 15th Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, published by a local Malay daily. Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry will look into the matter from all angles, including potential legal action or direct engagement with the media involved. 'If necessary, we will summon them for clarification and take the opportunity to convey how false and irresponsible reporting can have serious implications. 'However, any action taken should not be construed as the government undermining media freedom,' he told reporters after attending the ministry's monthly assembly today. While expressing strong regret over the report, which claimed that the IGP was a member of the PKR Central Leadership Council, Saifuddin Nasution also described the mistake as serious, as it involved the reputation of the highest-ranking officer in the country's largest enforcement agency. 'The facts presented were obviously incorrect. The biodata profile included all of Datuk Seri Khalid's past experiences, with an apparent intention to insert misleading information, despite the police having already issued an official and verified profile,' he said. The minister stressed that an established media outlet should understand journalistic discipline, especially the obligation to verify facts, all the more crucial when reporting on a senior police officer with decades of service. 'Surely some effort should have been made to verify the facts. The consequences are substantial,' he said. On June 20, the media outlet in question published an infographic linking the IGP to the PKR leadership, which caused widespread public confusion. Sabah assistant minister summoned by MACC as RM200,000 mining probe closes in on charges
KOTA KINABALU, June 23 — Another politician in the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah state administration has been summoned to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office here today, the latest development in the mining scandal that began last year. According to news portal Info X, Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Assistant Minister Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy arrived at the MACC Sabah office at around 9am today, accompanied by two lawyers, to give his statement. In December last year, a video of Andi was published by Malaysiakini showing him in discussion with a businessman over the procurement of a mining licence. Andi, who is from Barisan Nasional, is the Kalabakan MP and Tanjung Batu state assemblyman. Last week, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that three individuals, including two state assemblymen, are expected to be charged later this month as officers begin the process of arrest. Aside from Andi, two other men have been named in media reports as those who may be charged.
