Jamshedpur: A Class XI student of PM Shri Upgraded High School, Gondadih, in Narwapahar locality of East Singhbhum district, has been invited by the Japanese govt to present his innovative science model — a life-saving emergency window ladder — as part of the Sakura Science Exchange Program.
The Jamshedpur lad, Cyrus Kumar Dutta, developed a folding escape ladder that serves as a window grill in normal times and can be used as a ladder to escape from the window when other exit facilities, staircases, and lifts cannot be used. "In multi-storey buildings, people on the upper floors experience problems when a fire breaks out as the normal exit routes like staircases and lifts catch fire. In such a situation, the foldable window ladder, which is detachable, can be used for a safe exit," Cyrus said.
The iron grill-made ladder is cost-effective and is designed like a conventional window grill.
"The ladder has been designed on a latch mechanism. Any layman can open the latch and convert the window grill into a ladder to descend," said Kalpana Bhagat, the school's science teacher, who guided the young boy in realising his innovative dream. Earlier in 2024, Cyrus's innovation was judged one of the five best models in the country by the Union ministry of science and technology under the INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) scheme.

Cyrus's model was the only one from the state selected for the Sakura program. In total, 54 students from all over the country are visiting Japan from June 15 to 21 for the program.
"It is a matter of honour and pride that my son was chosen for a visit to a foreign country because of his innovative work," said Cyrus's father Premjeet Kumar Dutta, an auto-rickshaw driver.
He expressed gratitude to the school management for arranging funds for the travel of his son.
Principal Arun Kumar, approached the UICL management and arranged Rs 25,000 for Cyrus's journey within a short time after learning about the family's financial problem.

1 crore lies dormant as govt sits on prepaid auto policy

1 2 Jaipur: The state govt has delayed implementing a policy for pre-paid auto-rickshaw stands for nearly five years. As a result, a nationalised bank in Jaipur has declared the account—meant for managing these stands—dormant due to lack of transactions over an extended period. According to members of auto-rickshaw associations, the account holds around Rs1 crore, collected as a Rs2 service charge from commuters at pre-paid stands. The amount was meant to serve as a benevolent fund for auto drivers and their families but remains untouched in the absence of a clear policy. "It was the Congress govt who introduced the pre-paid auto rickshaw stands in the city way back in 1999, but suddenly, after 21 years, the Congress govt again closed these pre-paid booths, citing there is no pre-paid booth policy in the state. Since then, this bank account is lying unused and was declared dormant by the bank," said Kuldeep Singh, president of an auto rickshaw association in Jaipur. The account was opened in 1999 with the Chaura Rasta branch of a nationalised bank. Two representatives of the transport department and two representatives of the two auto rickshaw associations were the signatories. An old-timer recalled that in 1999, the Congress govt started these pre-paid booths with three aims. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologist: Just Add 1 Drop Of This Household Item To Any Dark Spot And Wait 3 Minutes Undo First, to ensure that the passengers, especially at the railway station, airport, and Sindhi Camp bus stands, need not bargain with the drivers and can pay govt-approved fare at these booths. Second, to keep a record of the drivers and the passengers along with the items they are carrying with them for security reasons. Third, to utilise the service charge accumulated from these booths for the welfare of the auto drivers and their families. "The fare at these pre-paid booths was on par with the metered fare. Passengers needed to pay a service charge of Rs 2 for pre-paid autos, and this charge remained the same till these booths were withdrawn. For 21 years, a service charge amounting to more than Rs 80 lakhs was collected and deposited in the bank account. We did not utilise a single penny in the 21 years, and now the account has been declared dormant," stated Umrao Quershi, the President of the second auto rickshaw union in Jaipur.

Modi flags off 100 new electric buses for city

1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: In a move towards a modern, eco-friendly mobility network, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off 100 new electric buses under the Capital Region Urban Transport (Crut). The PM inaugurated the new buses during his visit to the city to mark one-year anniversary of the BJP govt in Odisha. The new additions increased the number of e-buses under Crut in the capital city to about 150. The capital city is steadily improving infrastructure supporting EVs with the introduction of a new public charging station at Vani Vihar Square recently. Besides, the Crut has also been developing exclusive bus depots equipped with EV infrastructure. With the new additions on Friday, Crut is likely to increase the number of routes covering more distant parts of the city as well as Cuttack and Puri. Besides the e-buses, Crut operates about 400 buses which run on conventional fuel. "There is a growing demand for public buses in the city. Looking at the need and demand, we have strengthened our fleet. The new and upcoming addition to the fleet will predominantly be e-buses only," a Crut spokesperson said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He said the additions took the total number of buses under Crut to about 510. "There are 58 routes where Ama buses are plying now. We will be adding a few new routes with the new buses," added the spokesperson. The Ama Bus (earlier called Mo Bus) services have gained immense popularity in quick time. From daily ridership of a few thousand in the initial days, it has gone up to 2.16 lakh in Bhubaneswar alone. Looking at the demand, the state govt increased the fleet with new EV buses as well as routes covering more parts of the city. It also introduced Ama Bus service in Rourkela in 2023. It later expanded the service to cities like Berhampur and Sampalpur.

Deadline extended again: Motorists yet to install HSRP

Nagpur: Despite repeated extensions and appeals, a significant number of vehicle owners in Maharashtra — particularly in Nagpur — are yet to replace their old registration plates with High Security Registration Plates (HSRP), mandated for all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. HSRP is a tamper-proof number plate with a unique identification code and non-removable snap locks aimed at curbing vehicle theft and improving traceability. The installation is mandatory under Central Motor Vehicle Rules. In a fresh circular issued by Maharashtra transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, the govt has once again extended the deadline for HSRP installation to August 15, 2025, citing poor public response and growing demand from citizens for more time. The previous deadline was June 30, 2025. As per the latest figures, compliance with the mandatory High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) installation remains sluggish across Nagpur. Out of 16.71 lakh vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, only a fraction completed the fitment process. In Nagpur city RTO, which oversees 12.59 lakh eligible vehicles, just 1,13,427 HSRP orders were placed, and only 55,076 plates were fitted so far. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What She Did Mid-Air Left Passengers Speechless medalmerit Learn More Undo While 71,248 appointments were booked till June 19, the gap between orders and actual fitments reflects a massive backlog and lack of urgency among vehicle owners. The situation in Nagpur (East) Deputy RTO is similar, where 4.11 lakh vehicles fall under the mandate. Of these, 1,09,183 HSRP orders were recorded, but only 48,136 vehicles completed the fitment process. Appointments in this zone stood at 62,470 as of June 19. Meanwhile, the Nagpur Rural RTO, which handles 5.62 lakh pre-2019 vehicles, has shown relatively better progress, with 82,853 vehicles fitted with HSRP from a total of 1.47 lakh orders placed. The transport department has warned that vehicles failing to install HSRP by the extended deadline will face strict penal action from flying squads. However, those who book appointments before August 15 will be exempted from penalties, even if their actual fitment is scheduled for a later date. To ensure compliance, all regional and deputy regional transport officers have been instructed to conduct wide-scale awareness campaigns in their respective areas. They have also been asked to hold meetings with local vehicle dealers and transport unions, including those representing autos, taxis, buses, and trucks, to spread information. Bhimanwar has urged citizens not to wait till the last minute and to promptly book appointments for HSRP installation to avoid fines.
