Sam Fender hits the target at first of homecoming gigs

On the first of three hometown gigs over the weekend, the local hero held the 50,000 crowd in raptures, just like Eddie Howe's cup-winning side.
Touring the best-selling British album of the year, People Watching, Fender showed no sign of a hangover from playing in front of 80,000 at the London Stadium last weekend.
Back on home turf, the 31-year-old came out on stage carrying a black and white striped guitar and immediately belted out Getting Started.
Referring to his previous gigs at Newcastle United's cathedral on the hill in 2023, he told the crowd: 'The last time we did this was like a complete fever dream.
'This time I intend to drink in every f****** moment.
'Thank you so much for coming along.'
His tight band rattled through the hits in 90 minutes, plus 30 minutes extra time, with frequent reinforcements from the subs' bench, including 15-year-old busker Joe Bartley who received a rapturous send-off.
Fender even had time to send a bit of banter towards Sunderland fans who showed their displeasure towards him at their recent Wembley play-off victory with a banner.
He laughed: 'That was the best thing I've ever seen.'
Along with the rousing rock, there were tender moments too, notably when he brought on the Easington Brass Band for the Remember My Name, dedicated to his grandparents.
After a breathless version of Hypersonic Missiles to finish, Fender sent the fans away as delighted as if they had seen an Alan Shearer screamer from 30 yards out.

Following Lawrence's sad passing, a family statement said: "'Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field and no more so than to his family who were with him when he passed." The ECB have paid tribute to Lawrence, calling him a "pioneering" player who left an "indelible mark" on the sport in this country. ECB chair Richard Thompson said: "David 'Syd' Lawrence was a true trailblazer of English cricket and a man of immense courage, character, and compassion. Jobe Bellingham has opened up on his move to Borussia Dortmund after scoring his first goal for the club. Earlier this month Bellingham joined Dortmund from Sunderland for an initial fee of £27.8million plus £4million in add-ons, and he is currently representing the German club at the Club World Cup. Bellingham scored his first goal for Dortmund on Saturday as he found the net against Mamelodi Sundowns in a 4-3 victory in the group stages. The 19-year-old is following in the footsteps of his brother Jude by signing for Dortmund. Jude played for Dortmund between 2020 and 2023 prior to joining Real Madrid. Jobe revealed that he is settling in well at Dortmund following his move. Bellingham told FIFA: 'It's really good actually. I met the boys and signed before I flew out. So, I feel like I'm starting to really settle in with the team. Obviously, it's tough signing for a new club and then flying away straight away, but a lot of people have made it as easy as possible for me. So, to be honest, it's been really enjoyable.' The midfielder also discussed the fact that he has his first name 'Jobe' on the back of his shirt rather than 'Bellingham'. Bellingham stated that he enjoys having his first name on his shirt as it is 'unique' and 'quite cool'. He said: 'Well, if I'm being really honest, obviously, it started when I first signed for Sunderland. I, maybe, thought about it a few times. I thought: Yeah, that would be quite cool. 'I wasn't really trying to have a deeper meaning behind it, but I suppose you can find that in that act. But yeah, I think it's quite unique and it's quite cool, and it's something that I enjoy having.' Furthermore, Bellingham disclosed that he is inspired by players such as Premier League legends Patrick Vieira and Steven Gerrard. He said: 'Even [Diego] Maradona's documentary is amazing, but there's nothing I can learn from him because he's too good. But, yeah, players like – even Patrick Vieira. Andy Carroll and Lou Teasdale 'disappointed' after police called over row

Footballer, Andy Carroll, and his girlfriend, Lou Teasdale, admitted that the police were called after the couple had a 'heated discussion', which they say was 'blown out of proportion' Andy Carroll and his hair stylist girlfriend, Lou Teasdale, have admitted they were spoken to by police following a row between the couple on the Greek island of Mykonos. The pair, who have been dating since last year following the footballer's split with the mum of his three kids, Billi Mucklow, revealed they'd had a "heated discussion" while on the party island, but that things had been "blown out of proportion". Andy, 36, was reportedly questioned about a bust-up he'd had with Lou, 42, at a packed beachside restaurant and then at their hotel. One worker at the Nikolus Tavern said of the first argument: 'We recognised him as the footballer Andy Carroll immediately. He seemed very drunk and furious with his partner. He was using very bad words. It was improper behaviour. The woman looked very upset.' ‌ ‌ The Sun reports that police arrived and took the former West Ham ace, who was "very calm" to one side for a chat. He was later allowed to return to Lou, who is a well-known celebrity hairstylist. However, hours later police were reportedly called again by staff after reports of damage to the couple's room at a £500-a-night boutique hotel. Officers are said to have escorted Andy to a local station for questioning but no arrests were made. Another source claimed Lou did not stay with her boyfriend that night. They said: "After the restaurant episode, there was another incident at the hotel. This time, the footballer went to the police station. We know the woman stayed somewhere else that night.' Meanwhile, a British holidaymaker who reportedly spotted the pair while out for a stroll accused Andy of being "very drunk" adding that he shouted at Lou: "I'm done with us!" ‌ Responding to the reports, Andy and Lou admitted that the police were called following their "heated discussion", however they insisted things had been "blown out of proportion", issuing a joint statement, which read: "Whilst having a private dinner in a restaurant on a quiet holiday in Mykonos, we had a heated discussion of the sort that most couples have had on occasion. It quickly became apparent to the police that there was no reason for them to be there. 'We went outside the restaurant with them together as they insisted they wanted to 'look after' us. 'As far as we are concerned, the situation has been blown out of all proportion by an interested member of the public. No one was arrested, and no one was charged with anything. "We are very happy, in love and looking forward to our future together, and we are disappointed that a private disagreement has become a public matter.'
