Michigan State baseball takes two-out-of-three from Northwestern in Big Ten weekend series
Michigan State baseball was in much need of a successful weekend in Big Ten play against Northwestern. The Spartans, hosting the Wildcats in East Lansing at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium, played to a wild three game stretch that saw the Spartans win two-out-of-three for a humongous series win. MSU improved to 19-15 (6-9 B1G) on the season.
The Spartans and Wildcats played a thriller on Big Ten Network on Friday night, with the Spartans falling in 11 innings to Northwestern, 11-10. Despite the loss, MSU stuck with it throughout the weekend.
On Saturday, the bats stayed hot for MSU, with the host's putting up another 10-spot on Northwestern, only needing eight innings to put away the Wildcats, 10-0.
On Sunday, the pitching stayed hot for the Spartans, picking up the bats that had cooled off. Michigan State won a tight 3-1 game, securing themselves a series win.
The series win for MSU is massive towards the Big Ten standings and to earn the chance to play in the Big Ten Tournament, where only the top 12 teams in the standings get to go.
Michigan State will host Western Michigan on Tuesday before hosting Ohio State in another massive Big Ten series next weekend.

The official X account for the College Football with Sam podcast recently posted that they anticipate a big season for Spartans quarterback Aidan Chiles. The account made the strong statement that Chiles will be a "top 20 quarter back in college football" this upcoming season. The post from College Football with Sam noted "having a much healthier and deep offensive line" paired with a "lethal" receiving unit will play a big role in Chiles' growth this year. Chiles -- who is entering his second season as the Spartans' starter -- will look for more consistency from last year. Chiles finished the season with 2,415 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a completion percentage of 59.4%. His 11 interceptions led the Big Ten last year, but eight of those came in the first six games compared to only three in the second half of the year. Michigan State opens the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. The game is set to kickoff at 7 p.m. ET from Spartan Stadium and will be televised on FS1. 2026 defensive back commits to Tennessee football over Big Ten school
Tennessee received a football commitment for its 2026 recruiting class. Three-star defensive back KJ McClain committed to the Vols over Michigan State. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect is from St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey. 247Sports ranks McClain as the No. 47 safety in 2026 and No. 10 player in New Jersey. Advertisement Tennessee offered McClain a scholarship Dec. 12, 2024. He unofficially visited Tennessee for a practice on March 29 and officially visited the Vols on June 6. According to 247Sports, McClain is scheduled to officially visit Michigan State on Friday. He was offered a scholarship from the Spartans on Feb. 10. Tennessee has nine commitments in its 2026 football recruiting class. The other eight commitments include: quarterback Faizon Brandon, wide receiver Tyreek King, tight end Carson Sneed, offensive lineman Gabriel Osenda, wide receiver Tyran Evans, linebacker Braylon Outlaw, defensive lineman C.J. Is Penn State losing recruiting ground to Notre Dame?
First Grayson McKeogh, now Tyler Merrill. Those are two offensive linemen that the Nittany Lions have let slip through their grasp and have ended up with the Fighting Irish. Thus, this continues a slippery slope for the Nittany Lions as they continue to lose traction not just within their state, but in the Big Ten and on a national stage as well. For the past couple of weeks, it has just been continuous bad news on the recruiting trail as more and more top recruits eschew the Nittany Lions in favor of the men from South Bend. McKeogh and Merrill specifically were Pennsylvania guys and two of the better O-linemen in the cycle. To make matters worse, another Pennsylvania product in safety Joey O'Brien is said to be leaning in favor of the Irish. His five-star status as well makes it ever more painful, as Penn State fans are sure to notice the lack of one in this cycle thus far. Advertisement As the recruiting process grows ever more tense, look for this burgeoning recruiting rivalry to continue as Notre Dame gets ever more aggressive. They are already making moves in the 2027 cycle, extending an offer to a Penn State commit in the past couple of days.
