National Library of Wales missing 2,200 items
About 2,200 items are missing at the National Library of Wales - an increase of 84% in two years.
Among the archives and manuscripts missing are deeds of 13th Century Powis Castle, and "rolls" and "pedigree" documents from Gwrych Castle in Abergele, Conwy county, which twice hosted ITV's I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!
Among missing books are the history of the national library building itself in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, by Daniel Huws, and books by George Bernard Shaw and Virginia Woolf.
The library is creating a new "collection care" department and is currently recruiting a head of the department, as well as a head of unique collections.
The number unaccounted for is significantly higher than the 1,200 items that were missing when BBC Wales gained figures through a Freedom of Information request in September 2023.
A spokesperson said the increase is due to "new stock checking processes".
The library is a legal deposit library, which means it is entitled to a copy of every print publication in Britain and Ireland, and no items are allowed to be taken from the building.
Of the 2,206 missing items, the request under the latest Freedom of Information Act by BBC Wales showed that:
1,708 books and magazines are missing, some since 1999
393 maps, some since 1939
82 in the "archives and manuscripts" category, some since 1978
21 "screen and sound" items, some since 2019
two items in the "pictures and photographs" category, one since 2009 and the other since 2023
Missing archives include papers of J Glyn Davies whose songs for children include Cerddi Huw Puw (1923), which are based on sailors' songs he had heard during his youth.
These have been described as bearing "the marks of a genius".
Also missing are papers relating to Chirk Castle near Wrexham, the construction of which began around 1295 during the reign of Edward I.
Missing sound recordings include the satirical song "Carlo" by Dafydd Iwan which was written for the investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales in 1969, and a recording by Treorchy Male Choir.
Missing journals include issues of the library's own journal, Welsh History Review, Flintshire Historical Society, Gwent Local History and The Carmarthen Historian.
Missing books cover topics from Owain Glyndŵr, the last native-born Welshman to claim the title Prince of Wales, to a biography of Keir Hardie, the first parliamentary leader of the Labour party.
An 1818 edition of 'The Pleasures of Imagination' by Mark Akenside is missing, as is Lady Charlotte Schreiber's journals (1911), the "confidences" of a collector of ceramics and antiques.
A book by Phil Thompson and Tommy Smith called "Do That Again Son, and I'll Break Your Legs: Football's Hardmen" is also not accounted for.
Missing maps include a malt whisky map of Scotland, and several maps relating to Gogerddan, the principal estate of the old county of Cardiganshire in the 17th century.
The library's head of communications, Rhodri ap Dyfrig, said that staff had "introduced new stock checking processes for published collections and therefore we fully expected that there would be an increase in the items recorded as not being in their correct location".
He added: "The thorough process of monitoring of misplaced items takes place continuously and these checks are a normal and integral part of maintaining standards and good practice in the library sector.
"Due to this constant monitoring and work, the data we provide is a snapshot of a specific period in time, and this figure fluctuates regularly as items are found and relocated."
The library carries out an annual audit of items worth more than £10,000 and no missing items that cross that threshold were found over the last year.
The library's collections include seven million books and newspapers, 1.5 million maps and 950,000 photographs located across 160 miles of shelves.
The Welsh government said: "The care and management of its collections is a matter for the National Library.
"In doing so, it meets the Archive Service Accreditation – the UK-wide standard for archive services."

While King Charles and Queen Camilla often attend the annual display of music, dance, comedy and theater, one of his former butlers, Grant Harrold, says he doesn't think The King is a fan of the ITV competition show that feeds into the event. "I don't remember them ever watching Britain's Got Talent," Harrold—who worked for Charles between 2004 and 2011—said. The former butler, speaking on behalf of Spin Genie, continued, "I don't think it's something the King would watch. Camilla? Possibly. I think she quite likes game shows, and I think that's the kind of thing she would watch." Being informed is important to The King, and Harrold said that even if King Charles didn't tune in, Camilla "would probably watch it and fill Charles in on it so he knows who is who." Despite not being a reality competition fan, the monarch is keen to be prepared when he attends the Royal Variety Performance. "What they absolutely do is give The King a full background on how the show runs. He needs to understand how they pick the contestants, how the process works, because when he meets the winner at the Royal Variety, he wants to know this," Harrold explains. "Even though he might not watch it, he probably has seen one or two, or maybe Queen Camilla fills him in, but I can guarantee, from the official point of view, he will be filled in," he adds. Last year, Queen Camilla was forced to miss the show because of the lingering effects of pneumonia, leaving The King to attend on his own. In previous years, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Prince William and Princess Kate have attended on behalf of King Charles or Queen Elizabeth, so it's possible The King won't be there this year. Either way, it's safe to say the royals will have brushed up on their magic this December.

Noel Edmonds complains he is 'haemorrhaging money' on £15m New Zealand estate
Noel Edmonds reveals he is losing money with his business in New Zealand when the pouring rain puts people off coming to his pub. "We're haemorrhaging money at the moment," he says in ITV's Kiwi Adventure. The Deal or No Deal presenter, 76, set up life across the pond in New Zealand, leaving behind the UK forever in 2018. He bought up a £15m estate, River Haven, of 12 properties including a pub called The Bugger Inn and his own vineyard. Inviting the cameras into his life once again, the TV star has filmed a fly-on-the-wall reality show Kiwi Adventure which is now streaming on ITVX. In dramatic scenes in episode two, Edmonds is stood watching the downpours at the start of the season where he shares that the business is losing money as a result of the weather. He says: "When you come to New Zealand, you change your view about your relationship between the weather and the economy. "We're haemorrhaging money at the moment because you have to take staff on in anticipation of the guests coming. We're going to have to have a spectacular November and December to balance the books." Ever the optimist, Edmonds doesn't lose hope that things will turn out for the better. He says: "I believe in the cosmos. I believe everything happens for a reason." Although, he does admit: "Just struggling at the moment to come up with a good reason here!" It's early spring and The Bugger Inn pub should have lots of customers but there is barely anyone in sight because of the rain — despite their best efforts of trying to get people to come in. Earlier on, Edmonds had admitted it has been hard setting up his own business. He tells the cameras: "New Zealand is a great place to come to but it's not the easiest place to set up a business. We've done a fascinating thing with the River Haven adventure. Will it be the move that sustains us for years to come? Watch this space!" Despite the struggles, it's clear that Edmonds loves his new life in New Zealand with his wife Liz. "We were drawn here by the energy of the area," he says. Their new life in New Zealand is a far cry from their lives when they first met on the set of Deal or No Deal in the UK in 2006. It's been six years since they packed up their lives in the UK. The TV star has the chance to share why he decided to leave the UK for good in 2018. He says in Kiwi Adventure: "When people say to me, 'What do you miss at the UK?' I find myself going back to why I left. Because all the things I miss about Britain are the reasons I left. By that I mean that the country changed so much, so fast, so fundamentally, that I found myself missing a quieter country... We are not trees so you can move." Edmonds reveals he aims to have no regrets when he "gets to the end". Elsewhere, Liz also explains the couple had not initially thought they would set up the business. She says: "None of this was planned. None of it was planned at all. There was no plan whatsoever to buy a vineyard and do this. Their kisses were then revealed during the game at the end of last night's episode leading to shock from the rest of the group.
