PBM to go it alone in Sabah polls, says party's sec-gen

The Star6 days ago

SANDAKAN: Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM), a party widely perceived as Sarawak-based, is reaffirming its intention to contest solo in the upcoming Sabah state election — maintaining that no political cooperation is being pursued at this stage.
PBM secretary-general Munan Laja said the party is open to possibilities in the future, but for now will rely on its own grassroots machinery and local leaders to contest selected seats.
'So, we go solo. Not unless one day there is another picture coming. At the moment, we will go solo,' he told reporters after officiating the party's Jelajah PBM Sabah programme in Sandakan, on Sunday (June 15).
Held at Hotel Gloria in Bandar Letat, the event also marked the launch of the Tanjung Papat PBM division, which has attracted over 1,300 members in just one month.
Munan said the rapid growth in membership shows that Sabahans are responding positively to PBM's message, which centres on clean, community-based leadership.
'PBM is a new party with no excess baggage. The candidates are local people, fresh faces,' he said, adding that the party is still assessing suitable candidates from among its divisions.
The party currently has seven active divisions in Sabah and intends to field candidates in those areas based on readiness and local support.
Sabah PBM chairman Jupperi Lenson, meanwhile, denied claims that PBM is attempting to impose Sarawak-based leadership on Sabah, saying the party's multiracial and inclusive character makes it relevant nationwide.
'PBM is a national party... so the issue of whether we are a local or external party should not arise. What matters is the quality of leadership and an inclusive agenda,' he said.
Jupperi said PBM had been preparing for the state election since 2022 and is now active in seven areas, including Tanjung Papat, Bandau, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Tulid, and Kundasang.
He also said PBM is adapting the inclusive model it applied in Sarawak for Sabah's unique political landscape.
'There should be no issue about where a party originated from. What matters is its service to the people and its relevance. PBM is here to offer something different,' he said.
Munan also reiterated that PBM will keep its options open if political dynamics shift before polling day.

Khairul Firdaus calls for generational shift in Moyog leadership

Published on: Sunday, June 22, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 22, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Khairul Firdaus (second right) with Ceasar Mandela (second left) and Datuk John Ambrose (right) during the launch gimmick at ITCC. PENAMPANG: GRS direct member Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan has urged a generational leadership shift in Sabah, particularly in Moyog, calling for new leaders with fresh ideas. He said Sabahans have been misled for too long and real change requires space for sincere, critical thinkers, during Moyog Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah AGM on Sunday. Khairul commended veteran Datuk John Ambrose for stepping aside to allow Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun to lead, describing it as a positive example of political renewal. He acknowledged GRS's uneven support across Sabah but said its reform-minded stance under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor positions it well for the future. Ceasar Mandela said Moyog is ready to be a GRS stronghold, citing improved federal funding, reclaimed state powers, and key infrastructure gains under GRS. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabar launches 117-point report from public consultations

Published on: Sunday, June 22, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 22, 2025 Text Size: Zainie and other leaders and stakeholders. KOTA KINABALU: More than 300 stakeholders gathered at Wisma Wanita for the final town hall of 'Sabah Voices to Action,' where Sabah Action Body Advocating Rights (Sabar) officially launched a 60-page policy report outlining 117 public demands ahead of the 2025 Sabah state election. The report, compiled through a three-month consultation across Sabah, covers 21 areas including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and governance, and is accessible online in three languages. Sabar chairman Datuk Zainie Abdul Aucasa urged politicians to take the document seriously, calling it a grassroots effort that reflects the real concerns of Sabahans and a foundation for collaborative reform. Key proposals include the creation of Sabah-led education and health ministries, decentralised infrastructure planning, and sweeping reforms in governance, such as political financing laws and transparent tenders. The organisers emphasised that the report is a living, non-partisan document meant to guide inclusive policymaking, with Sabar calling on all parties to reflect its recommendations in their election manifestos. The Bahasa Malaysia, English, and Chinese versions of the report are now available for download here. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Anwar: Malaysia has right to speak up, calls for end to hostilities in the Middle East

KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said that Malaysia as a sovereign country should be able to speak up and take a stand over US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Anwar defended Iran's retaliation against Israel's attacks, but at the same time called for justice, peace and an end to violence. As an 'independent and sovereign country,' Anwar said, "Malaysia has to speak our stance.' The prime minister's remarks were from an audio recording made today in Kuching, Sarawak. Earlier, Anwar said Israel should not act provocatively and violently towards other countries, and said it was quite fair that Iran chose to fight and respond to Israel's attacks. The situation has now become murkier due to interference from external countries including the US, he said. Anwar also stressed the importance of human lives and justice, as well as the impact of the war globally. 'If the Strait of Hormuz is closed, that will be a big problem to the global economy," he said. Previously, Anwar had also said Malaysia as a sovereign nation must stand up for Iran's right to retaliate to uphold its dignity. On June 13, Israel launched airstrikes on Iran's nuclear and missile facilities, while Iran retaliated with missiles. The two countries have been engaged in combat for more than a week now. Newswire Reuters today reported that the ongoing conflict has resulted in Iran recording at least 430 deaths and 3,500 injured persons, while Israel has recorded 24 civilian deaths and 1,272 injured. Today, the US carried out airstrikes on nuclear facilities in Iran, with US president Donald Trump saying that the strikes had taken out three main nuclear sites there. Israel was previously reported saying that its strikes have delayed Iran's potential to develop a nuclear weapon by at least two or three years, while Iran has said its nuclear programme has peaceful aims.
