'Pathetic and Careless' UFC Star Jean Silva Under Scrutiny After Choking Fan to Sleep

After a high-profile UFC 314 victory over Bryce Mitchell, Jean Silva has gained attention from many UFC fans for his dominant performances and wild persona. With his first submission win notched under his belt, he improved his record in the promotion to five wins with no losses. The fact that he dispatched of Mitchell, who had made remarks praising Adolf Hitler, made him even more popular in the eyes of fans.
Now, however, fans may be withdrawing their support.

The rising UFC featherweight has drawn widespread criticism after he posted a vlog with footage of himself choking a fan unconscious at a Muay Thai event in Brazil.

The incident occurred over the weekend when Silva, currently ranked no. 11 in the UFC's featherweight division, interacted with fans. A fan asked Silva to demonstrate a chokehold, and the fighter obliged, locking in a rear-naked choke and holding it until the fan passed out, even after the fan tapped repeatedly. Silva later posted the footage on his YouTube channel, where it was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by MMA platform Championship Rounds and quickly went viral.
Watch the clip here:
The video sparked immediate backlash on social media, with people condemning Silva's actions as reckless and irresponsible. Many pointed out that applying a fight-ending submission on an untrained spectator, especially after they tapped, violates basic safety protocols and consent in combat sports.
'Even if the fan agreed to it, he was tapping multiple times to stop.'
'This is weird, let go on the tap.'
'I don't understand why fans agree to do this sh—.'
'One of these days, a fan is going to sue a fighter for this.'
'Pathetic. Really careless from Jean.'

Despite the backlash, Silva's supporters defended the act as harmless fun, noting that the fan appeared unharmed and even laughed afterward.
In the video, the fan regains consciousness quickly, smiles, and hugs Silva.
While Silva has gained attention for his dominant performances, this incident has shifted the narrative toward his judgment outside the cage. Silva's reputation may take a hit, even if no formal punishment from the UFC or CEO Dana White follows.

Lee went face down and Rabadnov hit him once more before referee Jason Herzog jumped in. Rabadanov will face Alfie Davis in the lightweight tournament final Aug. 15 in Charlotte, N.C.. Curtis Blaydes vs. Rizvan Kuniev prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ABC 8

Curtis Blaydes and Rizvan Kuniev meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ABC 8 at Baku Crystal Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom. Last event: 5-1 Advertisement UFC main cards, 2025: 57-44-1 Curtis Blaydes vs. Rizvan Kuniev UFC Baku preview Blaydes (18-5 MMA, 13-5 UFC) aims to rebound from an interim title challenge loss against Tom Aspinall last July. In the fight prior, "Razor" stopped Jailton Almeida in the second round with ground and pound, earning his fourth career Performance of the Night bonus. Throughout his entire career, Blaydes has never lost back-to-back fights. ... Kuniev (13-2-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his UFC debut against one of the toughest tests in the division. After a first-round finish in his second appearance on Dana White's Contender Series in August, Kuniev gets an opportunity to prove himself under the UFC's bright lights. Curtis Blaydes vs. Rizvan Kuniev UFC Baku expert pick, prediction Filling out the main card is a fight that the UFC has been trying to put together for some time now between Curtis Blaydes and Rizvan Kuniev. Advertisement Despite Kuniev being brand new to the division, he's being matched up with one of the top-ranked perennial contenders in Blaydes. Kuniev's best win is an overturned no-contest to Renan Ferreira, where the Sanda fighter showed some grappling chops from both positive and negative positions. That said, Kuniev will likely have a harder time getting that kind of game going against a fighter who can both match him in size and wrestling. Blaydes has seemingly abandoned his wrestling faster than Daniel Plainview abandoned his son in recent years, but that doesn't change the fact that he's one of a literal handful of heavyweights who can actually wrestle, which counts for a lot. I'm not picking this fight as confidently as I should be, but the pick is for Blaydes to stay safe and secure a win by unanimous decision. Curtis Blaydes vs. Rizvan Kuniev UFC Baku odds The oddsmakers and the public favor the American, listing Blaydes -260 and Kuniev +205 via FanDuel.
