1,000 new copies of Banu Mushtaq's Kannada original to be reprinted

The demand for the Kannada book, 'Haseena Mattu Itara Kathegalu,' the original compilation of short stories of whose English translation won the International Booker Prize for Kannada writer and advocate Banu Mushtaq, has increased since the announcement of the award. This has prompted the Mysuru-based publishers, Abhiruchi Prakashana to reprint 1,000 new books of the original collection.
The book was first published in 2013 by Abhiruchi Prakashana and has been sold out over the years. 'After 'Heart Lamp' was shortlisted for the Booker Prize about 15 days ago, 1,000 new copies were reprinted. While 300 copies sold out after the shortlisting, the rest were sold out in the last two days after the announcement of the award.
'Now, 1,000 new copies will be made available from Tuesday, and they will have 'Booker Prize winner' on the cover page,' said Ganesh M., founder of Abhiruchi Prakashana. He also said that there is a huge demand for the book in the stores as well as online markets.
With the book being sold out in major bookstores, readers are borrowing it from others. 'I wanted to read all the works of Banu Mushtaq and went to buy it, and could not find it anywhere. I have asked a friend who already has a copy to give it to me after he finishes reading,' said Chandrakanth J., an avid reader of Kannada literature from the city.
'Heart Lamp' is a collection of 12 short stories of Banu Mushtaq written between 1990 and 2023, translated into English by Deepa Bhashti.

For his upcoming film Ekka, starring Yuva Rajkumar and Sanjana Anand, director Rohit Padaki made a clear choice: to ground the movie in the raw reality of Bengaluru's busiest streets rather than the controlled environment of sets. 'Sets can never compete with what real locations can provide. There's an air of reality in every frame that you simply can't get from a set,' says the director. To achieve this level of authenticity, the film's team adopted a focused strategy. 'We shot in some of Bengaluru's busiest areas, like Shivaji Nagar, where we hid our cameras and filmed the scene; we wanted to make it look as real as possible. This method involved rehearsing scenes like theatre artistes, then moving to the actual locations for hidden-camera shoots. Nearly 30-40% of the film has been shot in this manner,' he reveals. Excerpts from a chat: 'KANNADA CINEMA IS DRIVEN BY A METROPOLITAN CULTURE' 'A metropolitan culture of filmmaking is taking over,' laments Rohit. He emphasises that for movies to truly succeed, the focus needs to shift back to strong writing, particularly one that embraces the 'native element which connects us to our roots.' The director points to other regional industries as examples. 'Take a look at Tamil or Malayalam movies; even though some of them are larger than life, they are still rooted in their culture. This connection is largely missing in Kannada cinema today because of the metropolitan culture of filmmaking, in most cases.' 'Around 80 per cent of the crew and cast were new. It was a good experience working with them because everyone was very hungry for success. We took on a challenge to finish the movie, from start to finish, in nine months. I didn't want to waste too much time working on one movie,' he explains.

In between their solid defence and attractive boundary that made England's bowling attack appear ordinary, Pant and Gill constantly chatted while standing at the striker's and the non-striker's positions. Sometimes, it was teasing each other, sometimes related to what the bowler was trying to do, and sometimes it was just pure fun. And all of that was in Hindi.
