A refurbished iPhone or Macbook could save you a lot of money — but there are some things you should consider.
If you're in the market for a new tablet or laptop, grabbing a refurbished device saves you money and can reduce electronic waste. Yet, when buying second-hand, there are some extra things you want to consider. To help you on your tech journey, we spoke to tech repair experts about how to shop for new-to-you gear.
First things first: Get clear about what you're looking for. According to Mohammad Shaikh, owner of The Tech Guys in Richardson, Texas not all second-hand tech is equal. 'Refurbished' does not mean the same as 'used,'' Shaikh told HuffPost. 'Refurbished devices are professionally restored to a functional and cosmetic standard, often with warranties, whereas used devices are sold as-is.'
Within the refurbished world, you'll likely see sellers or retailers classify quality in levels, which can differ from seller to seller. Harding notes that your local computer repair shop likely sells refurbished tech and even suggests checking out electronics recyclers (which he says you can find on Google). Amazon has created its own categorization for its refurbished product program, Amazon Renewed.
On Amazon Renewed, refurbished products are rated from 'acceptable' (a fully functional device with potential light cosmetic damage and at least 80% of the original battery life) all the way up to ' premium,' a superior functioning device with no scratches or signs of cosmetic damage and at least 90% of the original battery life. (If you're shopping off Amazon, Andy Harding of Massachusetts Salem Techsperts advises to look out for 'business-class' devices, which are 'the best in the industry.')
Sam Schiff, a tech repair expert based in New York City said, 'If you're on the fence, try to consider what you'll use the device for. Most users don't need the latest and greatest machine for basic tasks. As long as the device is coming from a reputable supplier with a good return policy, buying refurbished is pretty low risk and can help save the planet and a bunch of money!'
Amazon
Schiff also suggested researching the specific year and model you're thinking of getting. Like cars, some years and models of certain tech have had recalls or major issues. A quick reddit search can likely show you if other users have had issues. Harding also suggests looking at potential repairs the device may need, battery replacement prices, storage, system upgrade options and factoring in how long you plan to have this item.
After ensuring the device listing is 'refurbished' the experts recommend looking at the return policy and warranties. 'Spend time researching the seller, device and available reviews,' Shaikh said. 'Make sure you're purchasing from a reputable source to avoid scams or poorly refurbished products.' Seller and return policy info is easily available on Amazon Renewed — you'll find it right under the 'Add to Cart' and 'Buy Now' buttons. Simply click on the seller name, where you can read reviews and learn more about the seller.
Amazon Renewed has a network of qualified sellers that inspect, test and clean products before listing them on the site's marketplace. These tech products are protected by the site's Renewed guarantee, which includes a minimum 90-day window in which you can return your purchase for any reason, and receive free troubleshooting support for any claims.

Promising review: "This refurbished MacBook Air is a fantastic deal. I'm in between jobs and needed a reliable laptop for job applications. In the past, I've opted for Chromebooks as budget-friendly options, but this MacBook is a significant upgrade. It's faster, better quality, and the added bonus of accessing iMessage is incredibly convenient. Apple's older models often hold up really well, and with new versions constantly being released, the prices on these older ones drop, making them a great buy. I did experience an issue with a previous order that malfunctioned, but the return process was smooth and hassle-free. Although the condition was listed as 'acceptable,' the laptop I received only has a small scratch, and the battery life is solid. To top it off, the shipping was impressively fast—arriving in Hawaii much quicker than I expected! Highly recommend this option for anyone looking for quality on a budget." — V

It's powered by LG's a9 AI processor Gen7, and it has Alexa built in as well. Prime Day is Amazon's members-only shopping event, which means you'll have to be a Prime subscriber on Prime Day to take advantage of most of the savings. Amazon still offers a 30-day free trial to new Prime subscribers, so you can start your free trial closer to July and participate in the event. Amazon Prime Day 2025 will be back this year on July 8 through July 11. Amazon Prime Day typically comes around annually in July. In the last few years, Amazon has also had its "Big Deal Days" in October, which is effectively a second Prime Day and the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season. Prime subscribers can go to Amazon's site on Prime Day to see all of the exclusive deals they have access to. Prime subscribers do not have to do anything additional to get Prime Day sales: the discounts you see on product pages will show up in your cart automatically. If you're not a Prime subscriber and you go to Amazon to shop on Prime Day, you'll likely see tons of items on sale but only "with Prime;" those discounts will not be available to those who are not active Prime subscribers. Technically yes, but even if you do not pay for a Prime membership, you should still check out Amazon on Prime Day. While most Prime Day deals will be exclusively available to subscribers, there are always a handful of sales available to all shoppers. Amazon distinguishes between them very clearly: you'll see "Prime exclusive" on product pages near the deal pricing on the discounts that are only available to paying members. Separately, it's very likely that other retailers like Walmart, Target and Best Buy will have their own competing Prime Day sales during that time frame, too. So if you're not keen on shopping at Amazon at all, it's worth checking out other retailers during the week of Prime Day to see if they are matching Prime Day deal prices.

Apple is reportedly considering the acquisition of Perplexity AI
Apple's executives are thinking of acquiring Perplexity AI both to get more talent and to be able to offer an AI-based search engine in the future, according to Bloomberg . Adrian Perica, Apple's head of mergers and acquisitions, has reportedly already talked about the idea with services SVP Eddy Cue and the company's top decision-makers with it comes to its AI efforts. It's early stages, however: Apple has yet to talk to Perplexity about a bid, and the internal talks may not even lead to a formal offer. The executives also reportedly discussed an alternative, wherein instead of buying Perplexity outright, it'll team up with the AI company instead. Either way, the idea is to develop an AI search engine powered by Perplexity and to integrate Perplexity's technology into Siri. While Apple has yet to make a formal offer, Bloomberg says it met several times with Perplexity over the past few months. In May, Cue revealed that Apple discussed a possible Safari-integration with Perplexity while on the stand for Google's ongoing Search antitrust case. Cue took the stand due to Apple's long-standing deal with Google to make its search engine the default on the iPhone. (In turn, Apple gets billions of dollars a year — $18 billion in 2021 — from the arrangement.) Cue didn't share any definitive plans, however, including the possibility of an acquisition. If regulators order Apple to end its partnership with Google, purchasing Perplexity would make it easier for the company to develop an AI-based search engine. In addition, it would allow the company to acquire talent needed to be able to catch up with other companies when it comes to artificial intelligence. Apple, like Meta, has been scouting for new AI talent. Bloomberg says it's even competing against the Facebook owner to hire Daniel Gross, the founder of AI company Safe Superintelligence Inc. The company does seem to need help to be able to release the AI features it wants to provide its users. A few months ago, for instance, Apple delayed the rollout of a more powerful Siri that was a key component of its original pitch for Apple Intelligence.
