The em dash does not belong to ChatGPT
A writer-journalist friend was recently told that something he wrote felt like it was ChatGPT-coded. This was because of his liberal use of the em dash—that long punctuation mark which signals a mid-sentence shift to add emphasis, or to frame a detail too important to sideline. Over the last few months, there has been a lot of clamour around em dashes showing up frequently in AI-generated writing. The assumption, now gathering steam in certain corners of the internet, is that if you use too many em dashes in your social media posts, you must be using AI to aid your writing. Furious at the allegation, my friend took to LinkedIn to post a spirited rant—part grammar lesson, part love letter—breaking down the em dash, the en dash, and the humble hyphen. It got me thinking. As a reader, when I see a detail framed by em dashes, I take it more seriously than if it were cushioned inside parentheses. In my head, parentheses whisper and giggle, but em dashes declare. Even if a thought comes engulfed in parentheses inside my head, when I put it on paper, I often use em dashes instead, because I want the reader to think they still carry the same weight as the stuff that came before and after. Incidentally, Jane Austen, the subject of our cover this week, was famously em-dash-happy. In 2019, writer Kressie Kornis published findings from a two-year study of dashes in Austen's manuscripts and published work, which excluded hyphens and dashes used in place of proper nouns. Some of her drafts, Kornis noted, used up to 67% more dashes than her published works. This also suggests that Austen's editors may have deliberately dumbed down her writing style. Even more fascinating: Austen's dash usage increased with age. On Instagram, I stumbled upon handles like @emdashphilips of American poet Emilia Philips, and a private account @emdashes belonging to an Emily Gordon who mentions punctuation in her bio. It was delightful to see people are building their online identities around this punctuation mark. And why shouldn't they? The em dash is serious business. Translator and academician Arunava Sinha says, 'As a reader, an em dash tells me to stop, think, and then move on. I like reading in a rush, so I appreciate it when a writer asks me to pause.' Even though he's partial to commas when he writes, he admits they make every portion of a sentence look identical. The em dash, however, 'allows for emphasis'. Author Nona Uppal from Delhi has long memorised 'Option+Shift+ Hyphen' command on her Macbook to summon the em dash. 'I've been doing it for years,' she says. 'I think I should just create a shortcut key instead,' she says, almost as if sandwiching the thought between em dashes as she speaks. 'But I like that there's some friction in the process of placing an em dash,' she reckons almost immediately after. 'I don't want to overuse it. The em dash should capture an inner layer of thought that I want the reader to pay attention to,' Uppal says. While there are many writers speaking up in defence of the em dash ever since the AI link-up, I do wonder if this will make the silent majority of those not too confident about their place as writers pipe down on their genuine em-dashing. 'Interestingly, if they do, the frequency of em dashes in AI-writing will reduce too,' says Avinash Pandey, a faculty member in the linguistics department at the University of Mumbai. 'After all, AI simply regurgitates what has been fed to it.'

16 Smart Ways to Save Money on MacBook Repairs in Dubai in 2025
Is your MacBook acting up, but you're worried about the repair costs? You're not alone! MacBook repairs can be expensive, especially if you're on a tight budget. But don't worry—there are smart ways to save money and still get quality service. Here's your complete guide to affordable MacBook repairs in dubai! Before you do anything, check if your MacBook is still under warranty or covered by AppleCare+. AppleCare+ can save you a lot, as it covers many repairs for a small service fee. You can check your coverage on Apple's official website. If you're covered, use it! Before any repair—DIY or professional—make sure to back up your important files. Repairs can sometimes lead to data loss, so use Time Machine, iCloud, or an external drive to keep your data safe. Don't rush to the first repair shop you find. Call at least five local Macbook Repair Services Dubai, compare their prices, and ask for written estimates. Make sure you know exactly what you're paying for—parts, labor, and any extra charges. Look for repair shops with good reviews, proper certifications, and clear warranties. If possible, choose an Apple Authorized Service Provider. This way, you know your MacBook is in safe hands. If you need a part replaced, ask if the shop uses original (OEM) parts. Used OEM parts from trusted sellers can also save you money. Never buy cheap parts from unknown sources—they might damage your MacBook even more. Are you a student, teacher, or military personnel? Many repair shops and Apple itself offer special discounts. Always ask if you qualify for any deals or seasonal offers. Once you know the average repair cost, don't hesitate to negotiate. Some shops are willing to lower their prices, especially if you're a repeat customer or bringing in multiple devices. Don't let anyone talk you into fixing things that aren't broken. If you're not sure what's wrong, do some research online or get a second opinion. Sometimes, a simple fix is all you need. If your MacBook is old or the repair cost is very high, think about buying a refurbished or newer model. Sometimes, upgrading is more cost-effective in the long run. If you have the right tools and skills, some simple repairs (like replacing a battery or upgrading RAM) can be done at home. But remember: MacBooks are delicate. If you're not sure, it's safer to let a pro handle it. Also, using the wrong tools or making a mistake can make things worse. If you do try a DIY repair, make sure you have the correct screwdrivers and an anti-static wrist strap. Work on a clean, well-lit surface to avoid damaging your MacBook. Take care of your MacBook to avoid future problems: Keep it clean and dust-free. Use a protective case. Avoid eating or drinking near your laptop. Don't overload it with too many apps. Keep your software updated. If you notice a problem, get it checked sooner rather than later. Waiting can make things worse and more expensive to fix. Always use trusted repair shops and sellers. Cheap, fake parts can cause more damage and cost you more in the end. If your MacBook is badly damaged and you can't access your files, professional data recovery might be your only option. These services can be pricey, so use them only if your data is irreplaceable. Apple now offers a self-repair program, but it can be complicated and sometimes expensive. It's best for people who are very comfortable with tech repairs. MacBook repairs in dubai, don't have to break the bank. By following these tips—checking your warranty, comparing shops, using quality parts, and taking care of your device—you can save money and keep your MacBook running smoothly. And remember, when in doubt, it's always safer to get help from a trusted professional. Take care of your MacBook, and it'll take care of you! TIME BUSINESS NEWS

Always look for a repair shop that employs Apple-certified technicians or has verifiable experience dealing specifically with Apple products. Jump online and read through Google reviews or Facebook comments before deciding. When searching 'Mac computer repairs near me', take time to browse the feedback from actual customers. Consistently high ratings and detailed positive reviews are a great indicator of trustworthiness. A reputable MacBook repairing shop near me will offer a warranty on parts and labour, typically ranging from 30 days to 12 months. If they don't, that's a big red flag. Costco Fans Debate Over New Checkout Process
Earlier this month, Costco announced its new buy now, pay later feature (BNPL) through Affirm. Basically, online orders totaling between $500 and $17,500 qualify for payment plans ranging from three to 36 months. The interest rates range from 10 percent to 36 percent with no hidden fees or late penalties. Additionally, payments are managed through the Affirm app or website, with options for automatic deductions. 😋😋🍳🍔 Taking to a popular Costco forum on Reddit, one user joked, 'Buy now and pay later = hotdog debt?' Unsurprisingly, it sparked a lot of debate about BNPL, and whether or not it's actually beneficial to shoppers. 'Affirm is a huge scam,' one user argued. 'No, not if you know what you're getting into; I bought a new MacBook Pro on Affirm and paid it off in four months, zero interest charged,' another responded. Related: 'It's still a predatory business model. They make money off the people who screw up or use it because they have no other choice. I understand the 0% benefit, but for me, a Macbook is a luxury purchase and luxury purchases should never be financed. Just my opinion,' the original user replied. A third user chimed in the thread, 'Would you finance a car? Or a house? I need my MacBook every day to do my work—yes, I could use a cheaper Windows PC, but the MacBook Pro is reliable and tough and helps me work best. Bought mine with cash, but have loans for my house and car still, oops.' Nowadays, many retailers use BNPL options through third-party providers like Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna, or PayPal. Examples include Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Zara, Revolve, Sephora, Apple, and Samsung. OpenAI teams up with former Apple design chief Jony Ive as AI race heats up
Jony Ive, a former Apple executive known for designing the iPhone, is joining forces with OpenAI, the San Francisco startup behind popular chatbot ChatGPT. On Wednesday, OpenAI said it's buying io, an AI devices startup that Ive founded a year ago, for nearly $6.5 billion in an all-stock deal, the largest acquisition in OpenAI's history. 'We have the opportunity here to kind of completely reimagine what it means to use a computer,' OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman said in a video with Ive about the partnership. The pair don't specify what AI devices they're working on, but Altman called it 'the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen.' The partnership shows how OpenAI is taking on some of the world's most powerful tech companies including Google, Apple and Meta that are also working on AI-powered devices to shape the future of computing. Chirag Dekate, a VP analyst at Gartner, said the announcement reflected an 'inflection point' in the tech industry, where future products and services will offer users more personalized and proactive assistance. 'This shift suggests a future where technology is less about the tools themselves and more about the intelligently orchestrated experiences they enable,' he said in an email. Globally, spending on generative AI is expected to total $644 billion in 2025, an increase of 76.4% from 2024, according to a forecast by Gartner, a research and advisory firm based in Connecticut that focuses on technology. The race to build AI-powered wearable gadgets and roll out more AI tools that can generate video, text and code and help people shop also means that major tech companies are recruiting top-tier talent. Earlier in May, OpenAI hired Fidji Simo, a former top Meta executive and the chief executive of grocery delivery startup Instacart, to lead the startup's applications team. Ive, a British American designer, is a well-known figure in the tech industry because he designed some of Apple's iconic products such as the Macbook, iPhone, iPad and iPod. Joining Apple in the 1990s, Ive became Apple's chief design officer in 2015. He left the company in 2019 and started LoveFrom, a creative collective and design firm that worked with brands including OpenAI. Silicon Valley tech companies have been working on gadgets, including headsets and glasses, for years but they're still not as ubiquitous as the smartphone. There have also been major flops such as Humane's AI pin, a wearable virtual voice-operated assistant that was criticized for various issues such as providing inaccurate information and overheating. In February, San Francisco-based Humane shut down the AI pin after it was acquired by Hewlett-Packard. But the fumbles haven't stopped tech companies from barreling forward with building glasses, brain-computer interfaces and humanoid robots as they look to a future beyond the smartphone. When Google released smart glasses in 2013 that could shoot photos and videos, the company faced concerns about people using the device to surreptitiously record other people or read text while ignoring others. But the gadget resurfaced years later. This week, Google unveiled a prototype of its AI smart glasses at its annual I/O developer conference in Mountain View, demonstrating how people can use the device to search for information about a painting, travel and other topics without having to type on their smartphone. The search giant is partnering with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster on smart glasses. Last year, Santa Monica-based Snap unveiled the fifth generation of Spectacles, its augmented reality glasses that overlay digital objects on the physical world. The device, which was only available for developers, allowed people to play with virtual pets, conjure up images with a voice command or swing a virtual golf club. Meta teamed up with Ray-Ban on smart glasses that include an AI assistant that can answer questions, translate and help take a photo. It's also working on a more powerful pair of AR glasses that lets people take video calls, get recipe recommendations and multitask in other ways. And Apple, which unveiled a pricey mixed-reality headset known as the Vision Pro in 2023, is also reportedly working on smart glasses. In the video with Altman, Ive said the products that people use to connect to technology are decades old, so it's 'just common sense to at least think surely there's something beyond these legacy products.' 'I have a growing sense that everything I've learned over the last 30 years has led me to this place and to this moment,' Ive said in the video.
