Will Ferrell confirms he will return to Broadway with stage musical adaptation of his 2020 Eurovision movie

Perth Now04-06-2025

Will Ferrell has confirmed he will return to Broadway with a stage musical adaptation of his 2020 film 'Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga'.
The 56-year-old actor and comedian, best known for his roles in 'Elf' and 'Anchorman', is co-writing the Broadway script for the musical with Harper Steele and Anthony King.
Will was quoted in Variety saying: 'We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.'
The original film starred Will and Rachel McAdams as aspiring Icelandic musicians Lars Erickssong and Sigrit Ericksdottir, who dream of representing their country at the Eurovision Song Contest.
It featured original songs such as 'Ja Ja Ding Dong', 'Lion of Love', and the Oscar-nominated ballad 'Husavik'.
The new stage version is being developed with music by Savan Kotecha, and will be directed by 45-year-old Alex Timbers, whose previous Broadway credits include 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical', 'Beetlejuice', 'Here Lies Love' and 'Gutenberg! The Musical!'.
Alex said: 'Will Ferrell and Harper Steele are my comedy heroes. And when I first saw their joyful movie 'Eurovision' during the pandemic, it buoyed spirits during a very dark time. With this stage adaptation, I can't wait to bring that same mix of heart, spectacle, irreverence and awe to audiences across the world.'
No cast or production dates have yet been confirmed by producers.
Will previously made his Broadway debut in 2009 with the one-man show 'You're Welcome America: A Final Night With George W. Bush'. He also co-wrote 'Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga' alongside Andrew Steele.
The new project has the backing of the real Eurovision Song Contest.
Martin Green, managing director of the event, said: 'This is a stellar team for what I am sure will be an equally stellar adaption of a film the world loved. Our aim always is to bring the joy of the Eurovision Song Contest to more people globally.'

Jennifer Aniston reveals new career wish

Jennifer Aniston wants to star in a Broadway play. The 52-year-old actress has been one of the most famous faces in Hollywood for decades and revealed that her next career goal is to tread the boards on The Great White Way but she would need to find the "right piece" before she committed to it. She told PEOPLE: "I definitely want to do a Broadway play, That's on my bucket list but it's finding the time and finding the right piece, the right material. "But I absolutely have to do a play on Broadway." The Marley and Me star shot to fame in the late 1990s when she was cast as Rachel Green in Friends, and if she does make it to Broadway, she will become the second cast member to do so following David Schwimmer's 2006 appearance in the play The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. Other A-Listers to have starred on Broadway in more recent times include the likes of George Clooney - who was recently nominated for a Tony for his role in Good Night and Good Luck, whilst Succession star Sarah Snook was named Best Actress for The Picture of Dorian Gray. Meanwhile, Jennifer - who starred in various Off-Broadway productions before she found global fame - recently admitted that it is only in more recent years that she has learned to "love" her body. She told Allure: "We've got to love our bodies. It's doing the best it can. It's been with us since the day we started, so we can't be too hard on it. "Of course, we're all going to grow older, but how can we thrive as we grow older? And that is about giving your body the attention that it deserves." "For me personally, I loved my 30s, but my 20s were nothing. I was a nightmare. "I didn't understand working out until my 30s and 40s."

Spider-Man and Spaghetti Western actor Jack Betts dead aged 96

Actor Jack Betts has died aged 96. The American star was best known for his roles in Spider-Man, Batman Forever and a long list of Italian Spaghetti Westerns under the name Hunt Powers, and passed away in his sleep at his home in Los Osos, California, on Thursday (18.06.25), according to a statement from his family, with news of his death only emerging on Saturday. (21.06.25) Born in Miami, Florida, in 1929, Jack studied theatre before launching his acting career on the Broadway stage in a production of William Shakespeare's Richard III. He later found fame in Italy after landing the lead role in Sugar Colt, directed by Franco Giraldi, in 1966. Though he had no formal Western experience at the time, Jack bluffed his way into the role — the first of a dozen films in which he would play a gunslinger from 1966 to 1972. Jack told The Dev Show in a 2021 interview: 'In the hotel next to mine was Clint Eastwood. He'd go up to his mountain and do his Western and I'd go up to my mountain and do my Western. But while his films had distribution all over the world, my films were distributed (everywhere) except Canada and America.' Despite the lack of the North American distribution, Jack's performances earned him international recognition. Upon returning to the US in the 1970s, he resumed theatre work, including a run as Dracula on Broadway between 1977 and 1980. He later took on television roles, most notably as Dr Ivan Kipling in the soap opera One Life to Live, which he appeared in until 1985. In 1988, Jack accepted an invitation from his longtime friend, actress Doris Roberts, to move into a downstairs apartment in her Hollywood Hills home. Doris, known for her role in Everybody Loves Raymond, passed away in 2016. Jack said they were 'best friends to the very end' and that they had 'wonderful times together'. The pair also appeared together on Everybody Loves Raymond in a 1999 episode. Over the years, Jack made guest appearances on several hit TV shows including Seinfeld, Frasier, Friends and Power Rangers. He also had small roles in Batman Forever (1995) and Batman and Robin (1997.) In 2002, he appeared in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man as Henry Balkan, a board member of Oscorp Industries. His character delivers the line informing Norman Osborn, played by Willem Dafoe, that he is being ousted from the company — a pivotal moment that sets Osborn on the path to becoming the Green Goblin. Jack's character, along with fellow board members, is later killed in the storyline. Fans of the actor have paid tribute on social media following news of his death. One said: 'Well shoot, another Hollywood gunslinger rides into the sunset. Jack Betts was one of those actors who could make even a B-movie feel like an A-list production.' Another fan added: 'RIP to a legend. Jack Betts brought so much to the screen – from gritty westerns to comic book charm.'

Karol G unhappy with critics

Karol G is unhappy with criticism of her song 'Latina Forever'. The 34-year-old singer's ode to Latin women was slammed for sexualising women with the lyrics 't*** and a**' but Karol thinks it is unfair that she gets blasted for singing raunchy songs. She told Variety: 'I feel like the bigger the project gets, the harder the people get with me. I think there are different opinions on how I should and shouldn't be acting at this point in my career and it gets so confusing sometimes that it becomes hard to handle. 'It's difficult, because the video is incredible but I knew having us in bikinis with me singing about t*** and a** … I just knew it was going to be a talking point. But the way I see it, I am just singing of my realities. I don't want to change myself to have to please anyone, either. I have emotional songs on this record that are soul-touching, and then I have my fun and sometimes raunchy songs - Latinas are everything. Why can't we just be everything?' Meanwhile, Karol is one of the few Latin artists – including Luis Miguel, Bad Bunny and Shakira – who have embarked on a global stadium tour and she admitted she still hasn't processed how monumental it is. She said: 'I haven't spoken with [Bad Bunny], but I would love the opportunity to get to talk to him about the experience, because it is such a massive accomplishment that I haven't fully digested. When we first sat down to route the tour, everyone kept telling me, 'Don't you think it's too much too fast?' I'm so proud that we did it. I remember thinking 'My God, Shakira is doing this. I'm doing this?! I get to do what she does on this scale?!' It's insane.'
