New Delhi: Education, IT, and electronics minister Nara Lokesh requested Union minister for youth affairs and sports, labour and employment Mansukh Mandaviya to provide support for the construction of an international-standard Sports City in Amaravati. Lokesh met Mansukh in New Delhi on Thursday.

The primary objective of the Sports City is to provide world-class training and facilities, and to support athletes in various sports disciplines on national and international platforms. Lokesh urged the Union minister to help transform Andhra Pradesh into a sports hub. He also requested support for sports development from the school and village level across the state.
Lokesh further requested the establishment of Centres of Excellence under the Union sports ministry including for athletics, archery, and weightlifting at Nagarjuna University near Guntur, for Hockey and Shooting at the Kakinada district Sports Authority grounds.
He also urged for the swift approval of the 39 projects under the Khelo India scheme, submitted by the AP government with a proposed cost of Rs 341.57 crore, for the development of sports infrastructure. Rs 20,000 cr spent so far on PM Modi's rallies in Bihar, claims Tejashwi

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday continued with his "pickpocket" jibe, claiming that a staggering Rs 20,000 crore has been spent on rallies addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bihar so far. The BJP also sharpened its counter-attack, with posters being put up across the state capital bearing the slogan "Mera baap chaara chor, mujhe vote do" (my father stole fodder meant for cattle, vote for me), belittling the leader of the opposition who leads the INDIA bloc in the upcoming assembly polls. The young leader, who had a day ago raised the hackles of the ruling NDA by alleging that exorbitant ticket fares of Vande Bharat made Modi look like a "pocketmaar" (pickpocket), used the expression again in a stinging social media post. He alleged that rallies of Modi in Bihar, since 2014, have cost "Rs 100 crore each" and there have been "200 such public meetings" so far. "So the total amount splurged during the period, which has also seen five elections (three Lok Sabha and two Vidhan Sabha), is Rs 20,000 such meetings have been organised by the government even though the objective has been, clearly, electoral," the former Bihar deputy CM claimed. Notably, Modi was in Siwan district on Friday, which was his fifth visit to the state this year, the second in less than a month, and said to be "51st" since taking over as the prime minister. Yadav, who seemed to be in no mood to give up his tirade, alleged, "What should we call a person who cleverly uses public money on his own pretends to be a man of integrity?... Of course, pocketmaar, not madadgaar (a helper of the people)." The BJP, which takes on the RJD in the assembly elections due in just a few months, retaliated with full force. A day after BJP's former state unit president and Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary had sought to berate Yadav by using the famous line from the blockbuster 'Deewaar' - Mera baap chor Hai (my father is a thief) - in an obvious dig at RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's corruption taint, the party engaged in a "poster war". In the posters, which the party has not officially owned, the colourful slogan is inscribed next to a caricature that shows the father-son duo riding a buffalo, an obvious reference to the fodder scam. The conviction in the fodder scam has left Prasad, a former chief minister and an ex-Union minister, disqualified from contesting the elections. IND vs ENG: Stuart Broad rips into England bowlers, says 'they didn't quite get it right'

Ben Stokes (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill began his tenure as India's Test captain with a brilliant unbeaten century, following a composed ton by Yashasvi Jaiswal , as India took control on Day 1 of the opening Test against England at Headingley on Friday. After being put into bat by England skipper Ben Stokes , India closed the day in a dominant position at 359 for 3 in this five-Test series opener. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Gill remained unbeaten on 127 at stumps, having forged a crucial 129-run partnership for the third wicket with Jaiswal, who was dismissed for 101 shortly after tea. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant added late momentum with a typically aggressive knock, finishing the day on 65 not out. His innings included a remarkable swatted six off Chris Woakes in the final over of the day, as he and his new captain stitched an unbroken 138-run stand to further dent England's hopes. Former England pacer Stuart Broad criticised the home team's bowling effort, suggesting they failed to execute their plans properly. 'It didn't feel like the England bowlers fully executed their plans. I don't think they got it quite right — but that doesn't mean they can't do so this morning and turn the game around," Broad told Sky Sports Cricket. 'I think when the bowlers went full, they went a bit too full. And I feel England could have used a straighter field — maybe a straight mid-off, a straight mid-on, and an extra cover instead of a backward point. To me, backward point only comes into play if the ball is hit directly at it. Anywhere either side, and it's four. So I'd say, get rid of the backward point, bring in an extra cover, and encourage the batters to play with a straighter bat, especially if you're bowling that slightly fuller length,' he explained. Dominant India on Day 1! Jaiswal & Gill Hit Centuries | ENG vs IND 1st Test - Sahil from Leeds Stokes' decision to bowl first may have been influenced by the fact that the last six Tests at Headingley were all won by teams batting second. However, with veteran pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad retired, and both Jofra Archer and Mark Wood sidelined due to injury, England's attack struggled on a pitch that offered little help under increasingly bright skies. Woakes, recalled in place of the injured Gus Atkinson, took the new ball but went wicketless in his 19 overs, conceding 89 runs. Stokes was the most successful bowler on the day, finishing with figures of 2 for 43 from 13 overs. Game On Season 1 kicks off with Sakshi Malik's inspiring story. Watch Episode 1 here

English No Longer Colonial Relic But A Global Tool For Progress: Tamil Nadu Minister

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi has criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his recent remarks on the English language, calling it a veiled attempt to deny access to knowledge and empowerment for the underprivileged. In a sharp response posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Poyyamozhi wrote, "English is no longer a colonial relic - it's a global tool of progress. Nations like China, Japan, Korea, Israel and Germany teach it not as some colonial hangover, but to lead in science, tech, and trade." Taking aim at the BJP and its ideological parent, the RSS, he added, "Here in India, Amit Shah and the RSS want to paint English as elitist - not because it harms our culture, but because it empowers the poor, Dalits, and backward communities to rise. Like Sanskrit once was, they now want English kept out of reach for the masses. This isn't about language - it's about control." The DMK leader asserted that Tamil Nadu believes in equal access, offering Tamil for identity and English for opportunity - a dual-language approach that he said lifts all children rather than leaving many behind. His statement came in the wake of controversial comments by Amit Shah at a book launch, where the Union Minister said, "In our lifetime, we will see a society in which those speaking English will feel ashamed, that day is not far". He further claimed that Indian culture and identity cannot be understood through "foreign languages". Mr Shah's comments have reignited the ongoing language row between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the BJP at the Centre. The DMK has consistently opposed the three-language policy under the National Education Policy (NEP), terming it a "backdoor attempt" to impose Hindi and marginalise non-Hindi speakers in the country's diverse linguistic landscape. While the BJP maintains that the policy only promotes learning additional Indian languages and strengthens the mother tongue, the DMK counters that in practice, only Hindi gets prioritised - particularly pointing to the Kendriya Vidyalayas in Tamil Nadu, where Tamil teachers are often not appointed 'citing' low enrolment, leading to growing fears of linguistic exclusion.
