
Leakster: ARM's new prime CPU core will improve IPC to run more efficiently
Yesterday, MediaTek's Dimensity 9500 surfaced on Geekbench, which was our first brush with ARM's new prime core. It is codenamed 'Travis' and no, it wasn't running at 4GHz, just 3.23GHz. Travis is not official yet, but leakster Digital Chat Station reports that it will be unveiled in September.
The key metric for flagship chips will become IPC, 'instructions per clock cycle', according to DCS. This may spell the end of the gigahertz race on mobile. The simplest explanation of IPC is that a CPU with double the IPC needs half the clock speed to do the same amount of work. Reality is not so simple, but that is the rule of thumb.
Travis will deliver 'double-digit growth' in IPC (measured in percent), which will allow it to run more efficiently. Remember that higher clock speeds require a higher core voltage and heat generation goes up as the square of the voltage – meaning that even small differences can have a big impact.
The Travis core also supports SME, ARM's Scalable Matrix Extension. Matrix and vector calculations are the heart of all trendy AI applications, but also just about every classic signal processing algorithm (think image and audio processing).
Besides a single Travis core, the Dimensity 9500 will also be equipped with three Alto and four Gelas cores (Gelas being the next Cortex-A7xx core, while Alto is a bit of a mystery). The GPU is a new design from ARM codenamed 'Drage', which will be sold under the 'Mali-G1' branding.

PS. ARM is retiring the 'Cortex' brand and will split it into several branches: 'Lumex' for mobile, 'Niva' for PC, 'Zena' for automotive, 'Neoverse' for servers and 'Orbis' for IoT.

Apple doesn't mind that its new processors won't be as powerful as Qualcomm's new AP
The A19 and A19 Pro application processors (APs) will be focusing on efficiency this year instead of performance. Should Samsung Foundry get its yield on 2nm production up to 60% or higher, the 2nm Exynos 2600 AP could end up powering the Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26 + in most markets. That could make those two models the first smartphones to be powered by a 2nm chipset. Recently, the iPhone has been the first to the marketplace with a 7nm AP (iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, A12 Bionic, September 2018), a 5nm AP (iPhone 12 series, A14 Bionic, October and November 2020), and a 3nm AP (iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, A17 Pro, September 2024). Unless Samsung is unable to obtain enough 2nm chips for the Galaxy A26 and Galaxy A26+, the iPhone will not be the first smartphone to feature a cutting-edge 2nm chip. The company's latest chip, Dimensity 8450, is basically a Dimensity 8400 with a few minor improvements that probably don't matter in the grand scheme of starters, MediaTek's new Dimensity 8450 chipset is based on TSMC's second-generation 4nm node, just like its predecessor, Dimensity 8400. On top of that, it features the same octa-core configuration: 1x Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.25 GHz, 3x Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 3.0 GHz, and 4x Cortex-A520 cores clocked at the chipset uses the same Mali-G720 MC7 GPU (graphics processing unit), which is clocked at 1300 MHz. MediaTek announces the Dimensity 8450 with minor improvements
MediaTek announced the new Dimensity 8450, a direct successor to the Dimensity 8400 released back in December 2024. As the name implies, the upgrades are minimal, and the company introduced mostly under-the-hood changes. Interestingly, there's already a phone running the silicon - the Oppo Reno14 Pro. The Dimensity 8450 is still based on TSMC's second-generation 4nm node with an octa-core CPU with 1x Cortex-X4 core ticking at 3.25 GHz, 3x Cortex-A720 cores running at 3.0 GHz and 4x Cortex-A520 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz. The GPU is Mali-G720 MC7 with 7 cores and it's clocked at 1300 MHz. If it sounds familiar, that's because the Dimensity 8400 runs on the same exact hardware. However, the newer chipset boasts gaming and ISP optimizations. The GPU, for instance, now uses the StarSpeed Engine, improving real-world gaming, while the improved ISP has live-stream optimizations. The ISP is capable of handling 320MP sensors with zero-lag HDR imaging. The NPU 880 receives some love too with Agentic AI Engine that allows support for on-device GenAI and LLM workloads. Lastly, the Dimensity 8450's 5G modem gets a new power-saving feature, UltraSave 3.0+, to reduce energy consumption. We should start seeing the chip appear in upper mid-range phones in the following weeks and months. Source
