Meet 3 Hawaiian Honeycreepers That Might Go Extinct By 2032

There are few things in life worse than being a bird in Hawaii. Of the 142 avian species endemic to the islands, 95 have disappeared without a trace since the first humans arrived.
Of those left behind, 33 species have a spot on the endangered list. And for some Hawaiian honeycreepers, even our best efforts may be too little in the face of looming extinction. Here are three whose very existence is under extreme threat today.
At one time, the forests of Kaua'i echoed with the soft trills of the ʻAkekeʻe. This bright greenish-yellow honeycreeper, found nowhere else on Earth, once ranged widely across the island's highland forests, using its unique crossed bill to pry open buds in search of insects.
Today, its entire world has shrunk to the cool, misty canopy of the Alakaʻi Plateau. With fewer than 638 individuals left in 2021 and a massive decline seen over the years, the ʻAkekeʻe faces one of the steepest slides toward extinction of any Hawaiian bird.
The primary culprit is avian malaria. Introduced through mosquitoes that first reached the island in the 1800s, climate change has now ushered these deadly vessels of destruction into the bird's last stronghold.
Compounding the crisis are habitat loss, invasive predators and the spread of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death, a fungal disease devastating the very trees the bird depends on.
Captive breeding efforts have begun, but the ʻAkekeʻe has proven reluctant to reproduce under human care. In 2022, the state turned to landscape-scale mosquito control using Wolbachia-infected males as a form of biological 'birth control' in hopes of buying the species more time. But with funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law currently in limbo, the future of the program remains uncertain.
The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has predicted that this bird could vanish from the wild by 2028.
The Maui parrotbill, or kiwikiu, is a stout-billed songbird once widespread across Maui and Moloka'i. This colorful honeycreeper now clings to survival in a sliver of rainforest on the windward slopes of Haleakalā. Fossil evidence tells us this bird once roamed the dry lowlands of these islands.
Today, it occupies 11 square miles of habitat — one that continues to shrink.
While avian malaria is a shared threat among Hawaii's honeycreepers, the Maui parrotbill faces an even broader crisis. Generations of habitat loss, deforestation for agriculture and the spread of invasive plants and predators have reshaped its world.
Feral pigs, which once roamed the land and turned forests into mosquito breeding grounds, are largely gone from fenced areas. But rats remain, silently preying on nests. Nest failures are common after heavy rainfall, and the bird's slow reproductive cycle, where a single chick is born every year, offers little room for error.
A 2019 translocation effort, aimed at establishing a second population on the leeward slopes of Haleakalā, ended in tragedy. All but one bird died or disappeared before they could establish. Now, conservationists are pivoting by building a new captive population in facilities across Hawaii and the mainland U.S. with the hope that avian malaria can be contained in the near future.
With an estimated wild population that may now be under 150, the clock is ticking. According to U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service estimates, the Maui parrotbill is predicted to go extinct by 2027.
With a flamboyant crest and flame-orange streaks lighting up its black plumage, the ʻĀkohekohe was once a common sight across Maui and Molokaʻi. Today, this charismatic honeycreeper survives only in the misty mountain top forests of East Maui, confined to the highest ridgelines of Haleakalā.
It's estimated that around 1,600 individuals remain, and even that may be optimistic.
Like its close cousins, the ʻĀkohekohe is highly vulnerable to avian malaria, which now creeps upward into its last strongholds. But the challenges don't end there.
Its fate is also tied to the survival of the ʻōhiʻa tree, a keystone of Hawaiian forests and the bird's preferred source of nectar. Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death has devastated ʻōhiʻa forests elsewhere in Hawaii, and although Maui has mostly been spared, warmer temperatures could bring the pathogen uphill.
Unlike some other honeycreepers, the ʻĀkohekohe does not breed easily in captivity. A trial effort in the 1990s failed to produce a viable population, leaving no current backup in human care.
Its loud calls still echo across Waikamoi and Hanawi, but as per the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the ʻĀkohekohe might go extinct by 2032.

It sounds like something out of a nightmare: a giant drone flying through the sky and dropping containers full of live, buzzing mosquitoes, one of the world's most hated insects. But in Hawaii, this scenario is very much real. A remotely operated aircraft, about 8 feet long, is flying over remote forests in Maui and releasing cup-shaped capsules full of mosquitoes. As scary as it might sound, the project is a clever solution to a problem that has long plagued the Hawaiian islands. Hawaii faces an extinction crisis: It has lost hundreds of animals in the last two centuries, including dozens of land snails and birds, largely due to the spread of non-native species like stray cats and feral pigs. Many native animals found nowhere else on Earth are now gone for good. And several of the creatures that remain are heading in the same direction. Scientists on the islands are quite literally racing to save what wildlife remains. For the state's avian species — its iconic forest birds, significant, too, to Indigenous Hawaiian culture — the main force of extinction is malaria, a mosquito-borne disease. Mosquitoes, a nonnative pest, were introduced accidentally in the early 1800s by a whaling ship. The blood-suckers proliferated across the islands and later began spreading avian malaria, a blood-borne pathogen they transmit through their bites. Robby Kohley The disease, which can be fatal, utterly devastated the state's forest birds, and especially a group of species in the finch family known as honeycreepers. There were once more than 50 species of these colorful songbirds across Hawaii, and today all but 17 are extinct. As I've observed firsthand, the forests here have grown silent. The few honeycreeper species that persist today have been able to evade malaria largely because they live in higher elevations that are too cold for mosquitoes. But now, climate change is warming the islands, allowing the insects to march uphill into the remaining avian strongholds. Some experts describe this as an 'extinction conveyor belt.' Saving these birds is quite literally a race against the clock. That's where the drone comes in. Related Welcome to the extinction capital of the world Fighting mosquitoes with mosquitoes For more than a year now, a group of environmental organizations have been dropping biodegradable containers of mosquitoes into honeycreeper habitats on Maui and Kauai from helicopters. Now they're starting to do it with giant drones. The containers fall to the ground without a top, and when they land the insects escape into the forest. Critically, these are not your typical mosquitoes. They're all males, which don't bite, that have been reared in a lab. More importantly, they contain a strain of bacteria called wolbachia that interferes with reproduction: When those males mate with females in the area, their eggs fail to hatch. (That's thanks to a bit of biology magic, referred to as the incompatible insect technique, or IIT.) Researchers test out aerial mosquito releases using a drone. Adam Knox/American Bird Conservancy The idea is to continually release these special males into honeycreeper habitat where malaria is spreading as a way to erode the population of biting mosquitoes — and thus suppress the spread of disease. The approach has little ecological downside, said Chris Farmer, Hawaii program director at American Bird Conservancy, a conservation group that's leading the drone effort. Mosquitoes are not native, so local ecosystems and species don't rely on them. 'What this does is it erects an invisible barrier so that these mosquitoes can't get up to the forests where these birds remain,' Farmer told Vox. Since late 2023, a coalition of organizations known as Birds, Not Mosquitoes has unleashed more than 40 million male mosquitoes across Maui and Kauai. Nearly all of those were in containers tossed out of helicopters, which allow scientists to deliver the insects to remote forest regions where the birds remain. The group is now testing drones as an alternative. While the helicopters can carry more mosquitoes than drones in one flight — around 250,000, compared to about 23,000 — drones are safer because they're unmanned. They're also easier to fly on demand, says Adam Knox, the drone pilot and project manager for aerial deployment of mosquitoes at American Bird Conservancy. Dropping mosquitoes out of drones and choppers may sound unreal, but it's the best idea out there to help Hawaii's honeycreepers, said Marm Kilpatrick, an avian malaria expert at the University of California Santa Cruz. Kilpatrick is not affiliated with the mosquito-release project. 'The reason that it's worth doing is that so far, we haven't discovered anything else that can possibly do this better,' Kilpatrick told Vox. Scientists don't yet know if unleashing reproductively challenged mosquitoes is working and causing the resident mosquito population to crash. It's too soon to tell and the research is still underway, according to Christa Seidl, the mosquito research and control coordinator at Maui Forest Bird Recovery Project, a group leading avian conservation on the island. But the same approach has worked elsewhere — to stem mosquitoes that spread diseases among humans. Global health advocates have released mosquitoes with wolbachia strains that disrupt reproduction in other parts of the world and seen a massive decline in the incidence of, for example, dengue fever. 'It sounds weird to say, but we're standing on the shoulders of human disease,' Farmer said. 'The IIT we're using for conservation was first developed for human health.' Endgame for mosquitoes? Ultimately, the goal is not total elimination of mosquitoes that carry avian malaria in Hawaii. That's likely impossible, Kilpatrick said, unless scientists could release millions or even billions of lab-grown insects all at once. For the time being, the plan is to regularly — and indefinitely — release the mosquitoes into forests with some of the most endangered birds, such as the kiwikiu, 'ākohekohe, and ʻakekeʻe. Barring any regulatory or technical problems, drone deployments will soon be a regular part of that effort.

There's a new task force taking to the rainforests of Kaua'i, the westernmost island of the Hawaiian archipelago. A team of dogs is being trained to sniff out a palm tree-killing invasive species, the coconut rhinoceros beetle. "We're so excited to get our CRB detection dog program going on the island of Kaua'i," Conservation Dogs of Hawai'i (@conservationdogshawaii) wrote. "CRB is a highly invasive species that negatively affects palm trees as well as native plants," explained CDH, which is a local organization that uses trained service dogs to help fight the loss of biodiversity in Hawai'i. "Humans and dogs have been working together for over 20,000 years facing untold challenges of survival on every continent, in every climate, in feast and in famine. We have come this far together," CDH stated on its website. The dogs have been instrumental in detecting and removing invasive species because of their remarkable olfactory senses. In an ongoing project on O'ahu to eradicate the extremely invasive devil weed, the dogs have been very effective. "We have been impressed with the dogsʻ ability to lead their handlers to plants that are visually obscured by thick vegetation or distance (up to 90 meters away)," CDH reported. The dogs are trained to recognize the scent of the beetles and guide their handlers to them for extermination. This method helps farmers and gardeners avoid using pesticides to treat these insects. The invasive beetle has not infested all of the Hawaiian islands, the CRB response team said: "Their range in the Hawaiian Islands is currently limited to O'ahu, certain parts of Kaua'i, and recently found on Maui and Hawai'i Island." "This highly invasive species is not as widespread there as it is on O'ahu so there's still a chance to make a difference," CDH said. "This is awesome!" one commenter wrote. "Congratulations! So excited for you," another said. "I love that you guys are doing this," someone else stated. "I just chatted with an owner of a nursery this weekend who's so frustrated with the CB and he didn't know this was available." CDH responded, "Put them in touch with us and we can partner with them to survey their nursery soon." First-ever image of China's mysterious 'quasi moon' probe revealed weeks after it secretly launched into space

Chinese officials have revealed the first-ever photo of the country's highly secretive Tianwen 2 spacecraft, two weeks after it was launched into space. The elusive probe, which bears a striking resemblance to a current NASA spacecraft, will attempt to collect samples from one of Earth's mysterious "quasi-moons" next year. On May 29, the Tianwen 2 probe was successfully launched into space onboard a Long March 3B rocket, which took off from the Xichang spaceport in southwestern China at around 1:31 a.m. local time, Live Science's sister site previously reported. The spacecraft is scheduled to make a close approach to the asteroid 2016 HO3, better known as Kamo'oalewa, in July 2026, when it will attempt to land on the ferris wheel-size space rock and collect samples that will later be returned to Earth. Kamo'oalewa, which translates to "oscillating celestial object" in Hawaiian, is a quasi-satellite of Earth, meaning it orbits the sun alongside Earth and circles our planet, but is not gravitationally bound to it and will one day float away. The Tianwen 2 mission has been kept closely under wraps. The launch was not livestreamed by the China National Space Administration (CNSA), which announced the successful liftoff around an hour after it happened. Until now, the probe had never been photographed — all we knew about its appearance came from some rather basic artistic renderings released after launch, according to But on Friday (June 6), CNSA released a statement revealing that the probe is functioning as planned and is already around 1.9 million miles (3 million kilometers) from Earth — around eight times further away than the moon. The release also included a surprise first picture of one of the probe's 10-sided solar panels stretching out into the void of space. Related: Undiscovered extra moons may orbit Earth. The new photo hints that the Tianwen 2 probe likely looks similar to the spacecraft used in NASA's Lucy mission, which also sports decagonal solar panels and is currently en-route to the "Trojan asteroids" surrounding Jupiter. It also looks very different from the Tianwen 1 spacecraft, which carried China's Zhurong Mars rover to the Red Planet in 2021 — and had rectangular solar panels. (Tianwen roughly translates to "Questions to Heaven.") If Tianwen 2 successfully makes it to Kamo'oalewa and collects its desired samples, it is due to drop the asteroid fragments back to Earth during a close flyby in late 2027. The samples will then hopefully be retrieved from a return module, similar to the OSIRIS-Rex samples that landed in the Utah desert in September 2023. After that, the spacecraft will begin its secondary mission to visit 311P/PanSTARRS, a comet-asteroid "hybrid" located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, by around 2035. Kamo'oalewa is somewhere between 130 and 330 feet (40 to 100 meters) wide and has a minimum distance of 2.9 million miles (4.6 million km) from Earth. It circles our planet every 45 years or so and is believed to be a chunk of Earth's proper moon that was ejected during a meteor strike millions of years ago. Earth has six other quasi-moons, which all orbit the sun alongside our planet but are not permanently fixed to us. These space rocks are sometimes referred to as "minimoons." However, this term is usually reserved for objects that temporarily orbit our planet at much closer distances for short periods, usually less than a year. Astronomers suspect that there are likely many more quasi-moons and minimoons around Earth waiting to be found. Recent research has also hinted that there may be similar "co-orbitals" hidden around Venus, which could one day pose a threat to Earth if they are wrestled away by our planet's gravity.
