Facebook rolls out Passkey support on mobile for password-free login
In a significant step towards password-free security, Facebook has introduced passkeys as an alternative login method for users on Android and iOS platforms. The move is aimed at simplifying the login process while bolstering protection against online threats such as phishing and credential theft. The announcement, made via a newsroom post by Facebook's parent company Meta, outlines how passkeys will replace traditional passwords with biometric or device-specific authentication methods. With this system, users can log in using the same fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN that they already use to unlock their smartphones, eliminating the need to remember complex passwords. advertisementInitially available for the Facebook app on mobile devices, the feature is expected to expand to Messenger in the coming months. Meta also confirmed that this feature will eventually support other uses such as secure access to encrypted chats and autofill payment credentials through Meta does Facebook's Passkeys mean?Passkeys are a new type of login credential developed under the FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance, designed to enhance digital security. Unlike traditional passwords, which can be stolen or guessed, passkeys are cryptographic keys stored securely on a user's device. They are unique to each account and offer strong resistance to common attacks such as phishing, brute-force attempts, and credential stuffing. Facebook's integration of this technology means that, once enabled, users can sign in to their account simply by unlocking their device. The process does not transmit any biometric data to Facebook; instead, all authentication details — whether fingerprint, facial scan or PIN — remain securely stored on the device Passkey: AvailabilityadvertisementWhile the feature is now live for Facebook users on smartphones, it is not yet available on desktop or web browsers. This means users accessing Facebook from a laptop or desktop computer will still be required to enter their username and password manually until broader support is rolled out. To enable passkeys, users can head to the 'Accounts Centre' within the Facebook app's settings. They may also receive a prompt during the login process inviting them to set up a passkey. The system automatically assigns the passkey name based on the user's confirmed email address or, in its absence, their phone number. Notably, this name cannot be changed even if the user later updates their contact for additional security functionalitiesBeyond offering a streamlined sign-in experience, passkeys on Facebook will also enable additional security functionalities. According to Meta, users will soon be able to use passkeys to unlock encrypted backups in Messenger and autofill payment information securely through Meta Pay. These enhancements are part of a broader initiative by the company to align its platforms with emerging security standards while offering users greater convenience. Despite the shift towards a passwordless future, Meta confirmed that traditional authentication methods will still remain available. Users who access their accounts from non-compatible devices can continue to use their passwords as a cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, Facebook's adoption of passkeys marks a notable shift in how digital identity is managed. By leaning into biometric-based authentication, the platform is not only offering a more user-friendly experience but also setting the stage for wider adoption of secure, password-free login standards across the tech industry.

I ditched using passwords after major Google warning – an empty bank account is just the start if you ignore alert
PASSWORDS are dangerous – even if you've got a really good one. I've switched to a new way of logging in after very serious Google warnings reveal how passwords leave your emails, texts, photos, and even bank account exposed. 4 Google is urging people to create Passkeys as a safer alternative to passwords Credit: Google THE PASSWORD PROBLEM For years, we've been told that it's important to have a strong password. Well, that's true. But it gives you a false sense of security. Even with a good password, you're still They're easy to forget unless you make them simple, which makes it easy for hackers to guess. And if you re-use them across multiple apps, hackers can then easily break into all of your accounts in one go. Read more on cyber-crime And even if you use a password manager, your log-in is still at risk from Just tap your email into If it hasn't happened yet, it's only a matter of time. Think of all the stuff that is tied to your email. Most read in Tech It'll be your social media profiles, your emails, your iCloud or Google Drive with all of its texts and photos, your bank accounts, apps that you have your credit card tied to, and so much more. And if hackers break in, not only can they cause trouble with all of that, they can also pose as you to scam your friends, family, and colleagues too. Deepfakes more 'sophisticated' and dangerous than ever as AI expert warns of six upgrades that let them trick your eyes So you want to keep your accounts locked down as tightly as possible to avoid a massive (and potentially costly) headache. Tech giants have repeatedly warned about the dangers of passwords, including Google. In fact Google recently said it wants to "make passwords a rarity, and eventually obsolete". "For some time we and others in the industry have been working on a simpler and safer alternative to passwords," said Google's Christiaan Brand. 4 Passkeys can be created in a matter of seconds for your most important online accounts, including Google Credit: Google "While passwords will be with us for some time to come, they are often frustrating to remember and put you at risk if they end up in the wrong hands. "Passkeys are a new way to sign in to apps and websites. "They're both easier to use and more secure than passwords, so users no longer need to rely on the names of pets , birthdays or the infamous 'password123'." PASSKEYS – THE SAFER WAY If you haven't heard of Passkeys, don't worry – they're fairly new. PASSKEY PARADISE Here's Google's Sampath Srinivas official explanation for Passkeys... "When you sign into a website or app on your phone, you will simply unlock your phone — your account won't need a password anymore," Sampath explained. "Instead, your phone will store a FIDO credential called a passkey which is used to unlock your online account. "The passkey makes signing in far more secure, as it's based on public key cryptography and is only shown to your online account when you unlock your phone. "To sign into a website on your computer, you'll just need your phone nearby and you'll simply be prompted to unlock it for access. "Once you've done this, you won't need your phone again and you can sign in by just unlocking your computer. "Even if you lose your phone, your passkeys will securely sync to your new phone from cloud backup, allowing you to pick up right where your old device left off." Picture Credit: Google You unlock to an app or website using the same method you unlock your device. So, for instance, scanning your fingerprint or your face (like Face ID on an iPhone). "Unlike passwords, passkeys are resistant to online attacks like phishing, making them more secure than things like SMS one-time codes," Christiaan said. Imagine trying to get into a club or gym. The old way would be telling the person on the door a secret code, and they'll let you in. 4 You can also create Passkeys on your iPhone and then log in via Face ID Credit: Apple What if someone overhears the code, or guesses it outright? Or maybe someone at the club gives your code to someone else. It's not a secure method. With Passkeys, it would be like touching a fingerprint scanner on the door – or scanning your face. No one can steal it, and it can't be leaked. It's just you verifying yourself – no passwords at all. You can set up a Passkey for your Google account right now just by going into settings. And it's not just Google – lots of other apps also offer Passkey support. There's a long list of services now offering Passkeys, including: Amazon Apple iCloud Bolt Discord eBay Google LinkedIn Microsoft Nintendo PayPal Sony PlayStation Roblox Snapchat TikTok Uber WhatsApp X (Twitter) Switching to Passkeys means you can avoid having to log in with a password. 4 Mac owners can use Passkeys by verifying log-ins using the built in Touch ID fingerprint scanner Credit: Apple And more apps and websites are offering Passkey log-ins all the time. Of course, no system is entirely safe. So the best advice is still to be cautious when browsing the web. Don't click on unsolicited links And make sure to keep your devices and apps Even with Passkeys, you're not hack-proof – so always keep your guard up online. It's better than passwords, but your strongest protection is still yourself.

In today's hyper-connected world, digital technology is the bloodstream of civilization. People are increasingly interacting with society and services through digital tools, and governments and services rely on digital identification to improve efficiency and provide higher-quality services. Managing sensitive personal information is an enormous responsibility, and the risks are significant; security and reliability are paramount to any business that collects personal data. For over 13 years, RaonSecure has been working to enhance cybersecurity and secure personal data, specializing in fast identity online (FIDO) tools. More than 20 million people rely on RaonSecure's FIDO-based biometric authentication technology, and it was the first company in the world to obtain FIDO certification. RaonSecure demonstrated its expertise by providing the South Korean financial sector with OnePass, a FIDO-based biometric authentication solution that enables seamless authentication across mobile and online banking services. The company's advanced security technology significantly enhanced user convenience and strengthened digital identity infrastructure across financial institutions. Based on decades of experience, RaonSecure is leading the way in blockchain-based digital ID implementation. Korea is considered a global leader in implementing digital IDs, having provided its citizens with mobile driver's licenses, national veteran's registration cards and other official credentials. Most recently, the government began issuing mobile national cards to over 45 million citizens—a system powered by RaonSecure's blockchain-based digital ID technology. The mobile national card holds the same legal validity as a physical ID and is expected to see increased use in online environments that support non-face-to-face identity verification using mobile national cards. OmniOne Digital ID Service Flow. Credit: Courtesy of RaonSecure. OmniOne Digital ID Service Flow. Credit: Courtesy of RaonSecure. RaonSecure is also achieving visible results in global markets. Leveraging its blockchain-based digital identity platform, OmniOne Digital ID, the company conducted pilot services with global enterprises in the U.S. and Japan. In 2023, RaonSecure successfully provided consulting for the development of Indonesia's national digital ID road map. In 2024, the company successfully carried out a pilot project for Indonesia's integrated digital ID service and completed a national public digital wallet development project in Costa Rica. RaonSecure is taking that expertise and collaborating with the global community. "Looking forward, we see significant potential in expanding our digital ID solutions globally," founder and CEO Soon-hyung Lee says. The company collaborates with countries, opting to make its technology open source. Lee explains, "We support nations by transferring core technology so they can build their own digital infrastructure and achieve self-sovereign identity." Furthermore, working with the United Nations and the World Bank's Identification for Development (ID4D) initiative, RaonSecure is helping build identification systems for remote locations, where citizens may not have any form of ID. "Without identification, they cannot access essential services like health care, education or government aid," he says. Developing nations receive assistance and grants from international organizations such as the World Bank and the United Nations. RaonSecure collaborates closely with organizations and governments and provides open-source technology to help them implement digital solutions. Lee says the company works closely with local and international systems integration (SI) companies, offering them core fundamental technology. Lee illustrates the benefits of a unified digital identification; his entire medical history is stored in his digital identification, which is implemented through OmniOne Digital ID. If he visits a hospital in the United States and then has a medical emergency in China, the Chinese hospital can instantly access his medical records from Korea and the United States. "This level of hyperconnectivity is the future we aim to build. Regardless of the blockchain systems different countries adopt, our goal is to ensure seamless interoperability," he explains. "I believe that the era of Web3 and digital transformation is approaching rapidly for all nations," Lee confidently states. The first step to global digitization is replicating what RaonSecure has accomplished in Korea with digital IDs. By making the underlying technology open source and pushing for standardization, Lee hopes to encourage and support nations' adoption of digital IDs. RaonSecure will provide essential services and solutions as countries integrate health care, digital voting, smart contracts and digital currencies. "In the past, when people asked me what kind of company RaonSecure is, I would say we specialize in cybersecurity. Now, I tell them we are the enabler of Web3."
