End of content creators? YouTube Shorts to let users make videos with text prompts

Anyone can soon make short videos for YouTube without needing a camera or video editing skills. YouTube is gearing up to integrate its latest AI video generation technology, Veo 3, directly into YouTube Shorts later this summer. The company's CEO, Neal Mohan, revealed this update during his keynote speech at Cannes Lions. This new AI model lets users produce complete short video clips with both visuals and sound by simply entering text prompts, which will make it a significant advance in AI-driven content creation. Currently, Shorts creators use the previous Veo 2 model, which allows them to generate backgrounds through Dream Screen or create standalone clips. While Mohan did not provide detailed features of Veo 3's Shorts integration, he highlighted improvements in video quality and audio inclusion, which suggests these enhancements will be available for Shorts users. Also read: India's digital job scene to expand in 2025 with rise in AI and data-driven roles At present, Veo 3 video generation is accessible through paid subscriptions to Google's AI Pro or AI Ultra plans. It remains unclear whether using Veo 3 within Shorts will require a similar subscription, and Google has not given any clarification on this. YouTube has also announced that Shorts now reach over 200 billion views per day, which reflects their growing popularity. However, the introduction of Veo 3 raises concerns about misuse, particularly the potential to create deepfake videos of celebrities or imitate well-known creators. To address these risks, YouTube is collaborating with Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and other partners to develop tools which will allow public figures to control the use of their likenesses on the platform. The effectiveness of these protective measures is still uncertain. Also read: Neurotech and brain data: New frontier of privacy concerns The rise of AI-generated content could also impact the earnings of authentic creators. More than one-quarter of YouTube Partner Program members earn income from Shorts, and the influx of AI-produced videos may saturate the platform, which may potentially push genuine creators to explore alternatives like TikTok or Instagram Reels. Also read: Google I/O 2025: Gemini Live with camera now free for everyone, Veo 3 for AI Ultra and other reveals In short, YouTube's integration of Veo 3 into Shorts aligns with Google's broader strategy to lead the short-form video market through generative AI. While this technology could make content creation more accessible, it also raises legitimate questions about originality, creative value, and the long-term health of the platform in an AI-driven environment.

Google Gemini takes on AI assistant role with Scheduled Actions: Details

Google is expanding Gemini's capabilities with a new feature called Scheduled Actions, allowing users to automate AI-powered tasks at specific times or intervals. Rolled out for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, as well as select Workspace users, the update aims to make Gemini more proactive in handling everyday routines and requests. As of now, the feature will only be available to paying users. It's unclear whether free-tier users will get access in the future. According to Google's blog, with Scheduled Actions, users can ask Gemini to perform one-time or recurring tasks — like getting a daily summary of emails, receiving blog post ideas every Monday, or even getting weather-based outfit suggestions each morning. Users need to specify the task and when they would like it done, and Gemini will take care of the rest. For example, one may ask Gemini to summarise their calendar and unread emails every morning, generate five blog topics each Monday, or give a wrap-up of an event like an award show the day after it airs. These prompts can be triggered by time, date, or even specific events, offering a wide range of possibilities. Customise, track, and manage all in one place As per Google, users can schedule up to 10 active tasks at a time. All planned actions can be viewed, paused, or deleted from a new 'Scheduled actions' tab available under Settings in the Gemini app — accessible via mobile or desktop. If the task is location-based, Gemini will use the location where the action was originally created to deliver consistent results. Scheduled actions are delivered as push notifications on mobile, keeping users informed without the need to open the app each time. This feature builds on Google's broader ambition to make Gemini not just conversational, but truly helpful and agent-like. Notably, ChatGPT has also recently rolled out similar automated reminder capabilities for its subscribers.

Gemini can now schedule tasks, send reminders and keep you on track: Here's how it works

Google is adding yet another new functionality to Gemini that will allow the chatbot to schedule actions to allow users to proactively handle their tasks. The feature was first announced at Google's I/O conference last month and is now being rolled out to the company's paying members like AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers along with qualifying Google Workspace business and educatons plans. Gemini now possesses the ability to schedule tasks for users that will completed at a time of their choosing. Meanwhile, users can also set recurring tasks or one off tasks depending on their requirements. 'With scheduled actions, you can streamline routine tasks or receive personalized updates directly from Gemini. In your conversation, simply ask Gemini to perform a task at a specific time, or transform a prompt you're already using into a recurring action.' Google explains in its blogpost. Users will have the ability to schedule up to 10 tasks at a time and these can also be viewed and edited/paused/resumed by navigating to the 'Scheduled Actions' page inside the settings A few examles of tasks that could be scheduled using the Gemini app include: - Daily summaries of your calendar, to-do list, and unread emails for the day ahead. - Daily updates on the weather and outfit ideas based on a list of wardrobe items that you give Gemini. - Weekly news updates or details about upcoming events for your favorite artist. - Weekly rollups of new local cafes and restaurants to check out during the weekend. Google's scheduled tasks update for Gemini comes at a time when the company has been pushing out new AI features one after the other in an attempt to take control of the AI market as comeptition with OpenAI's ChatGPT, China's DeepSeek and others continues to rise. Notably, ChatGPT already had a similar feature which allows its paid users to schedule reminders or perform recurring actions with the chatbot.

Google Gemini can now handle scheduled tasks like an assistant

Google is taking another step toward making Gemini a more helpful assistant. It's rolling out 'scheduled actions,' a feature AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can use to ask the AI assistant to perform tasks at specific times, like providing a summary of their calendar at the end of each day or generating ideas for blog posts every Monday. Users can also have Gemini complete one-off tasks using this feature, such as asking for a summary of an award show the day after it happens, Google says. 'Just tell Gemini what you need and when, and it will take care of the rest,' the company writes in a post announcing the change. Gemini subscribers can manage planned tasks by heading to the 'scheduled actions' page in the Gemini app's settings. Android Authority first spotted an early version of the feature in April, which comes as Google aims to have its AI assistant perform more agent-like tasks.
