Edifier's New ES Series Of Bluetooth Speakers And ANC Headphones Unveiled
All three of the ES Series speakers have dynamic lighting like the ES60 shown here. One of China's premium audio brands has launched a new series of wireless speakers and headphones. Edifier has been making speakers and headphones since 1996 and with almost 30 years of experience under its corporate belt, the brand can almost be placed in the 'venerable' category due to an established and solid reputation for making robust audio gear with a refined sound. Today, Edifier revealed four new audio products consisting of three wireless speakers and a pair of ANC wireless headphones. The ES20, ES60 and ES300 speakers are joined by the ES850NB, a new pair of over-the-ear Bluetooth headphones with Active Noise Cancellation. Edifier says all four of the products are 'elegant and superb' and that's why they carry the ES Series prefix. Sporting a rich leather-like texture on the outside, each of the ES speakers has been designed to evoke a sense of timeless luxury as well as clear sound with plenty of depth and detail. The ES300 speaker from Edifier has support for Bluetooth and AirPlay. The speaker range kicks off with the compact ES20, followed by the mid-sized ES60 and the immersive ES300 which has AirPlay connectivity as well as Bluetooth. What's more, Edifier says it has sufficient power to fill a larger space with sound. The flagship Edifier ES300 has a handcrafted wooden construction finished off with deluxe leather-like accents. There is a braided speaker grille and a metallic control panel that lends the ES300 an elegant and slightly retro look. With two 1.25" silk dome tweeters and a 4" long-throw mid-bass driver, the ES300 can output a total of 60W. And thanks to Edifier's MazeTube and TurbMuff technologies, it also features an enhanced bass. Edifier has managed to minimize the port noise as well as tame any acoustic resonance. The ES300 comes in Black and Cream colorways and has a distinctively retro appearance. Some bass-heavy speakers can create an annoying booming sound from the reflex port at the rear of the speaker. This can be particularly noticeable when playing podcasts and speech programs at lower volume levels; there's simply too much boom. Interestingly, Edifier has addressed this problem which can plague quite a few high-powered speakers. With onboard support for high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/96kHz, the ES300 has dual-band Wi-Fi and is compatible with Apple AirPlay 2. Thanks to the Wi-Fi features and AirPlay, the ES300 can be used in a multi-room audio setup to stream audio all around the home with other AirPlay-equipped devices. Featuring USB-A and analog AUX inputs, the new ES300 can also be used as a compact computer speaker. Alternatively, the ES300 can be used to stream Hi-Res music directly from a smartphone or computer. In addition, there is an ambient lighting system offering three lighting effects with two colors. The Edifier ES60 is the mid-range in Edifier's ES speaker series. Although it's relatively small, it can output up to 34W via two 22mm tweeters and an oval mid-bass driver using neodymium magnets. The speaker also includes a passive radiator that underpins the mid-range with some impressive bass frequencies. The ES60 is the mid-range model if wireless speakers from Edifier. Built around Bluetooth 5.4, the Edifier ES60 can be paired with other speakers to create a wider stereo soundstage. It also supports Multi-point connectivity for connecting two Bluetooth sources at the same time, enabling seamless switching between them. With up to nine hours of playing time from a single charge, the ES60's built-in battery. Can be recharged via a USB-C port which also doubles as a digital input for taking audio from a digital source such as a computer or smartphone. The ES60 has a built-in microphone for making phone or video calls and it's suitable for all-day use. A dustproof and waterproof rating makes the speaker suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Finally, the ES60 has dynamic ambient lighting effects which is becoming something of a trend lately on many Bluetooth speakers. The lighting and other settings on the ES60 can be controlled using Edifier's ConneX smartphone app. The ES20 includes dynamic lighting to add a little mood to the occasion. The baby speaker of the ES range is the square-shaped Edifier ES20. This compact and portable Bluetooth speaker can deliver up to 6W of dynamic sound and has a surprisingly punchy bass for its size. The sound comes from a 43mm full-range driver that uses neodymium magnets. A 55mm passive radiator beefs up the lower frequencies for extra bass response. The ES20 is a compact Bluetooth speaker which would be suitable for bedside use or taking on a ... More picnic. The Edifier ES20 is driven by high-efficiency Class-D amplification which means the speaker can play for up to 15 hours on a single charge. Thanks to an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, Edifier claims the ES20 is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. With the latest Bluetooth Version 5.4, the E20 can be paired with other speakers to produce a stereo pair that doubles the output and produces a wider soundstage. The speaker also supports Multi-point connectivity for pairing two devices at once. Phone calls can be made using the built-in, high-sensitivity microphone. As with the other two speakers in the Edifier ES Series, the ES20 has ambient lighting effects that can be customized with Edifier's ConneX smartphone app which makes light work of personalizing the speaker's options. The new ES850NB are new wireless headphones with advanced ANC for canceling unwanted noise. The ... More headphones are available in Black, White, Pink and Brown colorways. Finally, Edifier has announced its new ES850NB. These over-the-ear wireless ANC headphones sport a sleek design and a powerful sound. The headphones are also certified for Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wireless operation. The ES850NB headphones have 40mm dynamic drivers that have a titanium-coated composite diaphragm. There's support for LDAC, AAC and SBC audio codecs which makes them suitable for use with iPhone and Android devices. Like many closed-back headphone designs on the market, the ES850NB come with Active Noice Cancelation and offer up to -45dB of effective noise reduction. Phone calls can be made with the headphones thanks to an AI algorithm that produces clearer call quality. A full charge of the battery can provide up to 92 hours of playing time. The ES850NB headphones have a foldable design and have enough stamina for up to 92 hours of ... More listening time. Edifier says its new headphones provide immersive listening and are comfortable for all-day listening. Featuring a lightweight and foldable design, the ES850NB headphones also have skin-friendly ear cushions and ship with a handy travel case to keep them safe. Smart features include a touch-to-chat button, Multi-point connectivity and customization via the Edifier ConneX smartphone app and TempoHub. The colorway options are black, brown, pink or white. Ruark says the new design brings 'even greater performance and versatility' to one of its most iconic designs. Combining clever design with precision engineering, MR1 Mk3 speakers are tuned to deliver a big sound from a compact form. Ruark claims the MR1 Mk3 have ideal acoustic properties, while the handcrafted wood cabinets have a sophisticated look thanks to their bevelled front edges and new Slate Grey fabric grilles. The new enclosure for the speakers has been subtly expanded to draw out optimum volume from Ruark's newly designed NS+ Bass/Mid units. The Ruark MR1 Mk3 has a phono stage input for a vinyl turntable and an output for a subwoofer. Equipped with AptX HD Bluetooth technology, the MR1 Mk3 supports wireless streaming and low-latency audio, making it suitable for use with TVs and streaming devices. For wired applications, the MR1 Mk3 has a USB audio input making it suitable for direct connection to computers or audio equipment that have a USB output. This new feature should make the MR1 Mk3 a popular choice with both music fans and serious audiophiles who want the highest resolution playback. At the rear of the main MR1 Mk3 unit are all the inputs you might need: USB audio in, Bluetooth AptX ... More HD, MM Phono stage and a combined aux and optical input. Additional line-in and optical inputs are also provided and offer a bit more flexibility for connecting third-party devices such as a Wi-Fi music streamer. One Year From Software Fiasco, Sonos Can Still Carry a Tune
Sonos passed a rather ignominious anniversary this past week. At least the company celebrated in style. When the maker of premium wireless speakers posted its fiscal second-quarter results on May 7, exactly one year had passed since a disastrous app upgrade. The Most Profitable Dividend Strategy Is the Simplest Record Beef Prices Poised to Hit Consumers This Summer He Unlocked the Secret to Selling Luxury Style Online Warren Buffett's Unparalleled Investing Record—in Charts Why This Stock-Market Bounce Won't Hold When Sonos launched the overhauled version of its app that customers use to control their product, it proved so buggy that many complained of being completely unable to use their systems. The update even marred the launch of the company's first headphones just a month later. It ultimately forced Sonos to call off other product launches and take down its financial forecast for the year. Sonos is still working its way out of that hole. But the latest results were a good step in the right direction. Revenue rose nearly 3% from a year earlier to about $260 million, beating Wall Street's projections. The company also kept gross margins flat with the prior quarter at 44%—despite a step-up in production to get ahead of the tariffs President Trump announced just after the quarter ended. Sonos shares have jumped more than 16% since the report. The stock is still down 42% since the new app launched, compared with a 10% gain for the Nasdaq in that time. So clearly Sonos still has a lot of work to do. That work is falling to Tom Conrad, the longtime Sonos board member who stepped in as chief executive in January. It has been a busy four months, with Sonos reducing its workforce by 12% and Conrad overhauling the organizational structure. That thinned out the layers, combining multiple hardware business units into one and centralizing the company's software efforts. 'It's pretty dramatic the progress we have made,' Conrad said in an interview. Software in particular remains a major focus—Sonos won't be launching any new hardware products for the rest of its current fiscal year as it focuses on making further improvements to the software. 'My bar is, the app has to be fast, reliable and easy to use,' he said. Will it all work? The Sonos brand has certainly taken a hit, but the damage doesn't seem permanent, or universal. The company has called out strong sales of the Arc Ultra over the past two quarters, a $1,000 TV soundbar that came out last fall when Sonos was still dealing with the blowback from its app update. And new customers are still coming in—at least at the right price. Sonos recently cut the price on its Era 100 by 20% to match the $199 price of its previous entry-level speakers. Conrad said the response so far has been strong, especially among customers new to the company's products. In a note to clients, Erik Woodring of Morgan Stanley said such moves could 'lower the friction of onboarding new users, which could pay dividends if successful, as the average Sonos household had 3.08 products at the end of [fiscal year 2024].' Still, Sonos will have to pull off the difficult balancing act of repairing its brand and expanding its customer base while in the midst of a trade war. The company deftly moved most of its manufacturing out of China during the first Trump administration, but it still faces tariff costs related to its manufacturing bases in Malaysia and Vietnam. Those costs could raise its expenses by as much as $10 million in its fiscal fourth quarter. That will leave Sonos with the same hard choice faced by other premium hardware makers like Apple: to raise prices or sacrifice profit margins. But building up inventory has bought the company some time. 'We have a lot of levers we can pull, and we don't have to pull them in haste,' Conrad said. Today's Sonos knows all too well the value of getting it right the first time.
