‘Full bloodied ... ': Stuart Broad's massive comment on Rishabh Pant's Headingley classic

India's Rishabh Pant does a cartwheel to celebrate after scoring a century on day two of the first cricket test match between England and India at Headingley in Leeds, England, Saturday, June 21, 2025, (AP Photo/Scott Heppell) Former England cricketer Stuart Broad praised Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant 's entertaining century against England in the first Test at Leeds, highlighting the dramatic innings that included falling scoops and run-out chances, while also commenting on Ben Stokes ' impressive four-wicket haul that restricted India to 471 runs. Broad emphasised the exceptional reception Pant received from the English crowd for his seventh Test century, noting it was one of the loudest celebrations for an opposition player in England. "It was really well appreciated, because it was so entertaining. We didn't know what was coming! There were those falling scoops, full-blooded shots, run-out chances... everything was going on. Everything you want as a Test match fan -- patience, leaving, then, a flair shot, putting the bowlers under pressure. The crowd really appreciated everything Rishabh Pant did. Box office - truly a box office innings," Broad said. Dominant India on Day 1! Jaiswal & Gill Hit Centuries | ENG vs IND 1st Test - Sahil from Leeds Broad praised captain Ben Stokes' performance with the ball, which prevented India from reaching a potential 500-plus total. "He is like: 'Give me the ball. I will show you how to do it -- this is how I want us to go about our business.' And let us remember -- Stokes is a cricketer who has not played much cricket this year, and yet he comes back and hits the straps straight away. He's looked like England's best bowler by far," Broad commented. Broad also expressed concern for England's batting prospects, suggesting that if Stokes could achieve swing and seam movement, Indian bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah could do the same. "Yes, he is their most experienced bowler, but he has also looked their best, and that is a concern for England a little. Because if Stokes can get it to swing and seam, then Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah can too. So, I do not think England will find batting quite as easy as the Indian batters did yesterday," he added. England chose to bowl first in the match, with India posting a substantial total of 471 runs. The Indian innings featured three centurions: Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 101 runs from 159 balls with 16 fours, captain Shubman Gill made 147 runs from 227 balls including 19 fours and a six, and Pant contributed 134 runs from 178 balls with 12 fours and six sixes. Ben Stokes led the English bowling attack with figures of 4/66, while Josh Tongue also claimed four wickets for 86 runs. Rishabh Pant vrooms past MS Dhoni's India record with scintillating century: 'Difference between sexy and silly'

India vice-captain Rishabh Pant began the five-match series against England with a bang as he completed his seventh ton in the longest format on Day 2 of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. The left-handed batter mixed caution with aggression as he kept the England attack of Ben Stokes, Brydon Carsen, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes and Shoaib Bashir at bay. The latter had six Test tons to his name while Pant now has seven. Pant is now on level terms with England's Matt Prior, Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara, South Africa's AB de Villiers and New Zealand's BJ Watling in the number of centuries scored as a Test wicketkeeper-batter. He brought up the three-figure mark in 146 balls. Pant brought up the century with a one-handed six off the bowling of Bashir. Upon achieving the milestone, Pant soaked in the applause of the Headingley crowd. Moments later, he brought out the somersault celebration and the entire Leeds crowd erupted in applause and cheers. 'One of the best hundred celebrations I have seen in my entire life,' said Ian Ward on air. Coming into bat in the third and final session on Day 1, Rishabh Pant made his intentions clear as he danced down the track off the bowling of Ben Stokes to smash him down the ground for a four. This was just Pant's second delivery in the innings. 'Outrageous. There's a difference between sexy and silly. It is going to look sexy when it comes off and silly when it doesn't,' said Dinesh Karthik on Sky Sports before the start of play on Day 2 while talking about Pant's shot off the bowling of Stokes. However, after hitting his second ball for a four, the left-hander went back into his shell as he displayed a full blockathon. However, once Shubman Gill completed his century, Pant decided to change gears, and he started to smash the England bowlers all around the park. Even in the last over of the day, Pant showed no hesitation in playing an aggressive aerial shot. The left-handed batter displayed his aggressive instincts and showed no hesitation in taking down the likes of Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes. Sunil Gavaskar's praise for Rishabh Pant On Day 1 of the first Test between India and England, Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Pant, saying he likes to dance down the track on the first few balls he faces as it makes him feel "free". 'It seems like that's how he plays. When he comes in to bat, on the second or third ball, he often uses his feet and hits a boundary. It makes him feel free and then allows him to play the way he wants," Gavaskar said during a segment on Sony Sports. "Over here, he's been measured in his approach, giving himself time out in the middle. But once he's in and the bowlers start to tire, that's when he begins to step down the pitch and really attack, hitting big shots, sixes, and boundaries," he added. India are completely bossing the first Test against England after being asked to bat. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal set the tone through a 91-run opening stand. Jaiswal and Gill then took the momentum ahead with their smashing hundreds.

ENG vs IND 1st Test: Record says Rishabh Pant is now a better wicketkeeper-batter than MS Dhoni in SENA countries

By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 21, 2025, 10:34 IST Rishabh Pant etched his name in the history books on Day 1 of the IND vs ENG 1st Test at Headingley by surpassing MS Dhoni to become the most successful Indian wicketkeeper-batter in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) conditions. The Indian vice-captain remained unbeaten on 65* at stumps, guiding India to a commanding 359/3 alongside skipper Shubman Gill. Pant needed just 50 runs to go past Dhoni's tally of 1,731 runs in SENA nations and did so in his trademark attacking style. His knock, laced with six boundaries and two sixes, marked his fourth half-century in England and solidified his reputation as a top performer in overseas Tests. The southpaw also became only the fourth Indian wicketkeeper to cross 3,000 runs in Test cricket, joining the elite club that includes Farokh Engineer, Syed Kirmani, and Dhoni. Pant now also holds the record for the most runs by an Asian keeper-batter in SENA countries. Pant, who currently has six centuries in Test cricket — the same as Dhoni — will resume Day 2 with an eye on claiming the record for most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper. ENG vs IND 1st Test – Day 1 recap: India dominated England with a solid top-order performance. Jaiswal set the tone with a century, followed by a 91-run opening stand with KL Rahul, who fell for 42 just before Lunch. Debutant Sai Sudharsan was dismissed for a duck, but Shubman Gill (127*) and Rishabh Pant (65*) added an unbeaten 130-run stand to take India to 359/3 at stumps. 'You don't want MS Dhoni behind in a big game...': Shastri compares legendary cricketer's fast hands to a ‘pickpocket'

Two-time World Cup-winning captain MS Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame on Monday. The wicketkeeper-batter, who continues to represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), played 90 Tests, 350 ODIs and 98 T20Is for India in a 15-year-long career. During the ICC Hall of Fame ceremony, former India head coach Ravi Shastri gave a hilarious tribute to the 43-year-old, comparing him to a 'pickpocket.' Tipping his hat to Dhoni's wicketkeeping skills and how he has still got it, Shastri said that you would never want someone of his ability behind the stumps in a crucial match because he can change the complexion of the game with either a catch or stumping. Speaking of Dhoni, the right-handed batter is considered to be one of the finest captains India has ever had. Under his leadership, India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. In 2011, after 28 years, India won the ODI World Cup as Dhoni played a match-winning knock in the final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium. 'He has hands faster than that of a pickpocket. If you're ever in India, going for a big game, especially in Ahmedabad, you don't want MS behind you; watch that back. The wallet will disappear,' Ravi Shastri said during the ICC ceremony. Also Read: MS Dhoni inducted into ICC Hall Of Fame Shastri also praised Dhoni for not letting his emotions get the better of him, saying the latter remains the same whether he scores a century or gets out for zero. "He gets out for zero is the same; he wins the World Cup is the same; he gets a hundred the same, and two hundred the same. There is absolutely, you know, no difference," he added. Under Dhoni, India also dominated the Test rankings for 18 months from December 2009. He also oversaw India's Champions Trophy-winning campaign in the UK in 2013. Dhoni holds the record for captaining his country in the most number of international matches. Regarded as a white-ball great, Dhoni was also named in the ICC's ODI and T20I Teams of the Decade at the end of 2019. Dhoni scored 4876 runs in 90 Tests at an average of 38.08. He also registered 256 catches and 38 stumpings in the longest format of the game. Speaking of ODIs, Dhoni amassed 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57. While in the shortest format of the game, the right-hander registered 1617 runs at an average of 37.60. Across both the white-ball formats, Dhoni afflicted 157 stumpings. He also took 378 catches across both ODIs and T20Is.
