Future of weight loss: Inside Abu Dhabi's latest health programme

Image credit: WAM/ Website The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) and Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC) have announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind Personalised Weight Management Programme in the region. Combining digital monitoring, a unique reimbursement model, and tailored clinical support, the initiative promotes sustainable weight management and active living. It aims to significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers—ultimately enhancing quality of life and health longevity. Innovative model for long-term health impact The programme is open to eligible Thiqa members aged 18 and above who are clinically identified as overweight or obese. It features an innovative reimbursement model designed to encourage sustained engagement, personal accountability, and continuous participation. Read- 'Our focus is on health—not just weight. This programme supports our vision of an active, health-conscious community by empowering individuals through personalised, science-driven solutions. Weight management requires customised approaches, not a 'one-size-fits-all' model, and this programme ensures that each participant receives the support they need to succeed,' said Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of DoH. Bridging gaps in preventive healthcare 'We know that even modest weight loss and small increases in physical activity can significantly lower the risk of chronic disease. Traditionally, healthcare systems have lacked clear pathways for doctors to support patients in becoming more physically active or in connecting them with relevant services. Our programme addresses this gap by providing structured guidance, personalised activity plans, and continuous monitoring through digital tools and clinical oversight—empowering our community to proactively manage their health and improve their quality of life,' said Dr. Rashid Obaid Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADPHC.

Five easy ways to add more protein to your diet this summer

As a nutritionist, I believe protein is vital. It plays a key role in weight management, with countless scientific studies pointing to protein boosting metabolism, increasing satiety and helping to maintain muscle mass. One wide-ranging review in the Journal of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome found that a high-protein diet aids weight loss by boosting satiety-promoting hormones and increasing energy expenditure. While salads can be overlooked as an insubstantial meal, by adding a generous portion of protein such as chicken, eggs, fish or legumes to your salad you can switch it up into a really wholesome, filling lunch. My favourite is tuna niçoise. The tuna, eggs and anchovies pack a substantial protein punch, plus it's full of fibre-rich ingredients including tomatoes and salad leaves. The potatoes provide a hearty and delicious source of carbohydrates and finished off with a nice olive oil dressing full of healthy fats, it makes for a perfectly balanced meal. How to build a protein-packed salad As a rule of thumb, we should be eating roughly 0.8g of protein per kg of body weight per day. Think juicy cuts of chicken, delicious salmon fillets and tuna steak, versatile chickpeas and lentils, and the ever-reliable egg. I also highlight the importance of fibre to my clients as it's so often overlooked. While we now appreciate the importance of protein, with many of us prioritising it in our diets, we also need to eat 30g of fibre each day. It's crucial for digestive health, plus countless studies have found it's important for healthy weight loss and maintenance as it increases feelings of fullness. When it comes to salad, fibre is easy as most vegetables are incredibly rich in it, especially leafy greens, carrots, avocado and beetroot. Also consider adding flavoursome beans or lentils to your salad for an extra fibre boost. As it doesn't contain any meat or fish, you may be surprised to see my vegetable and halloumi salad provides over 20g of protein. While I eat meat myself, I do enjoy eating plant-based and the flavoursome halloumi and fibrous wholemeal couscous in this salad both provide a good protein hit. For those who enjoy mixing their savoury and sweet, my chicken, avocado and strawberry salad is ideal. The avocado is rich in fibre and heart-healthy fats, while the strawberries are packed with vitamin C which provides a boost to the immune system. Plus, you can't beat juicy chicken in a salad. It's high-protein, low in fat and calories, and rich in selenium, which supports thyroid function and the immune system. These five protein-packed recipes demonstrate the very best that salad has to offer, whether you're a meat eater, pescatarian or plant-based. By prioritising protein in these delicious dishes, I've created salads that you'll not only enjoy eating, but that will support your weight management goals by keeping you full all afternoon. Ingredients 1 red pepper 1 courgette 1 red onion 120g halloumi 100g wholemeal couscous (uncooked) 1 handful rocket leaves 20g basil, finely chopped For the dressing: 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 tsp honey Method Preheat your oven to 200C (fan). Chop the vegetables into chunks, add to a baking tray and toss with half a tablespoon of olive oil. Season with a little salt and pepper, then roast for 20-25 minutes, until softened and starting to char at the edges. While the vegetables roast, cook the couscous according to packet instructions. Slice the halloumi, heat half a tablespoon of olive oil in a non-stick pan over a medium-high heat, then fry for one to two minutes each side until golden brown. Remove from the pan onto a separate plate. Once your vegetables are cooked, allow to cool for at least 10 minutes, then assemble your salad. In a large bowl, combine the couscous, roasted vegetables, rocket leaves and basil. Whisk together the remaining tablespoon of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and honey for the dressing and drizzle over the salad. Toss together thoroughly, divide between two bowls, and top each one with your halloumi. Ingredients 2 smoked mackerel fillets, skins removed 250g baby potatoes 200g asparagus Half a red onion 80g watercress For the dressing: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp Dijon mustard 10g dill, finely chopped Method Snap off the woody stems from the asparagus (gently bend each spear near its base; the woody part will naturally break off). Chop the spears into one-inch pieces. Bring a pan of water to the boil, add a generous pinch of salt and boil the the baby potatoes for 12-15 minutes, until tender when pierced with a sharp knife. Add the chopped asparagus for the remaining three minutes of cooking time, then drain the potatoes and asparagus together and allow everything to cool. When the potatoes and asparagus have cooled, add them to a salad bowl along with the watercress. Peel and finely dice the onion, and add to the bowl. Whisk the dressing ingredients together, drizzle over the salad and toss everything together. Divide between two plates, then flake a mackerel fillet over each one. Finish with a generous crack of black pepper. Ingredients 200g cooked king prawns 100g brown rice (uncooked) 80g edamame beans 200g mango 150g cucumber 1 red pepper 15g coriander, finely chopped For the dressing: 2 tbsp olive oil Juice of one lime Method Cook the brown rice according to packet instructions, drain and allow to cool. Finely slice the red pepper. Chop the mango into chunks, halve the cucumber lengthways and slice into thin pieces, then add everything to a salad bowl. Add the prawns, brown rice and edamame beans, and scatter over the coriander. Whisk together the olive oil and lime juice, drizzle over the salad and toss everything together. Ingredients 1 x 400g tin chickpeas (drained and rinsed) 90g quinoa (uncooked weight) 3 spring onions 100g sugar snap peas 150g petits pois Handful baby spinach leaves For the dressing 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp honey 1 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 tsp Dijon mustard 15g basil, finely chopped Method Cook the quinoa according to packet instructions and allow to cool. Chop the sugar snap peas into 1cm pieces, roughly chop the baby spinach and finely slice the spring onions. Add all three to a mixing bowl along with the petits pois. Tip in the chickpeas and the cooled quinoa , then whisk together the dressing ingredients, pour over the top and mix everything together. Divide between two bowls to serve. Ingredients 2 cooked chicken breasts (skinless and boneless) 1 medium avocado 150g strawberries 40g feta 15g pumpkin seeds 60g salad leaves For the dressing: 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar Method Hull the strawberries and slice in half, then add to a salad bowl along with the salad leaves. Halve the avocado, remove the peel and the stone, then chop into rough chunks and add to the strawberries. Toast the pumpkin seeds in a dry frying pan for four to five minutes until turning golden brown and fragrant, shaking as they toast. When they start to pop and jump, they are done. Add the toasted pumpkin seeds to the salad bowl, then whisk the olive oil and balsamic vinegar together for the dressing. Drizzle over the salad and toss everything together, then divide between two bowls. Slice the chicken breasts and add to each bowl, then finish by crumbling the feta over the top.

Eli Lilly Just Made Another Move to Dominate the Weight Loss Market: Should You Buy the Stock?

Eli Lilly made a move that could help address a drawback of its anti-obesity medicines. This could help it fend off mounting competition in this fast-growing area. Lilly's business extends far beyond this highly lucrative market. 10 stocks we like better than Eli Lilly › Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) is one of the undisputed leaders in the fast-growing market for weight-management medicines. Following recent clinical wins, the company may even be taking the lead ahead of its only real competitor in the field, Novo Nordisk. However, Lilly is not taking its foot off the pedal; it just made a move that could improve its already solid position in this space. Let's figure out whether this new development makes the company's shares even more attractive. There is no questioning the efficacy of Eli Lilly's Zepbound, its leading weight-management medicine. The therapy posted excellent results in clinical trials, and has now been in use in real-world settings long enough to confirm its clinical profile. However, the treatment is administered via subcutaneous injection once weekly. Furthermore, evidence suggests that the medicine's efficacy wanes after people stop taking it, and they often regain much of the weight they had lost. So for optimal benefits, it's best to stay on the drug for a while, which is bothersome considering the dosing schedule of weekly injections. Weight-management leaders like Eli Lilly have been seeking a solution to this problem, and the healthcare specialist may have made an important step in that direction. On June 3, Camurus, a Sweden-based pharmaceutical company, announced that it had signed a deal to provide Lilly its proprietary FluidCrystal technology, designed for the long-acting delivery of medicines. Camurus' technology can deliver therapies for days to months, thanks to a lipid solution injected with a syringe or autoinjector pen, which slowly releases the drug once it comes in contact with bodily fluids or body tissue. Eli Lilly will seek to use this tech with up to four of its GLP-1 medicines. The pharmaceutical giant will pay Camurus $290 million up front, with potential additional payments of up to $580 million in clinical, regulatory, and sales milestones, as well as royalties. If Eli Lilly can incorporate Camurus' FluidCrystal technology, its GLP-1 medicines might no longer need once-weekly dosing. That should make them more attractive and boost their already impressive sales. Of course, there is more work to be done with this project, but it's worth pointing out that Lilly has already found another solution (of sorts) for this issue. The company recently reported positive phase 3 clinical trial results for orforglipron, an investigational GLP-1 medicine. Orforglipron is taken orally once a day -- a far better option for many patients. Eli Lilly continues to find ways to fend off the increasingly stiff competition in this market. Several companies are working on oral formulations of GLP-1 therapies. Others are looking into long-acting weight-management options. Biotech giant Amgen reported positive but somewhat mixed data from a phase 2 study of MariTide, a once-monthly anti-obesity therapy, back in November. There will be more challengers in the future, but Eli Lilly seems ready to take on all of them, thanks to moves like the one it just made. And beyond its work in this area, the company has a deep lineup and pipeline. It recently acquired a promising mid-stage investigational non-opioid pain medicine. Newer products, like Kisunla for Alzheimer's disease, Ebglyss for eczema, and Jaypirca for cancer, will contribute meaningfully to its top line eventually. Other pipeline assets, such as a gene therapy for one form of deafness, could also make steady clinical and regulatory progress. And amid all that, Eli Lilly continues to grow its revenue at a faster pace than any of its comparable peers. In the first quarter, the company's revenue jumped by 45% year over year to $12.7 billion. Some might point to the threat of tariffs as a reason to stay away from the stock. If President Donald Trump can implement his trade agenda, it might lead to higher costs for the company, eventually resulting in lower profits and margins. However, Lilly has long been expanding its local manufacturing capacity, and it continues to do so, so this isn't an issue that it can't overcome. Considering the strength of its business, deep lineup and pipeline, excellent innovative capabilities, and rapidly growing dividend, Eli Lilly looks like a no-brainer buy.
