File photo. RNZ chief executive Paul Thomson. Photo: VNP / Phil Smith Public broadcaster RNZ is calling for voluntary redundancies among staff after its funding was cut by $4.6 million a year in the Budget. In a statement, CEO Paul Thompson said the news would be unsettling for people. He said applications would need to be considered against retaining skills and experience. RNZ has not released how many redundancies it is seeking. The deadline for applications is early July. Paul Thompson said: "Applications for voluntary redundancy will be considered against the need to retain necessary skills, knowledge and experience within teams or critical risk areas. "Any discussion around leaving an organisation, even if this is voluntary, is unsettling for the people involved and out of respect for our hardworking people, we will not be commenting further or sharing further details of the scheme while it remains open." RNZ told staff about the voluntary redundancies in an email on Tuesday morning.

Liverpool Hope University cuts 'devastating' for its reputation

Proposed job cuts at Liverpool Hope University (LHU) will have a "devastating impact" on the academic institution's reputation, a union has have been invited to apply for voluntary redundancy, said Roberto Catello from the University and College Union (UCU), with 39 lecturers facing losing their said the proposed cuts would have a "devastating impact on our academic community, the reputation of the university... and the local economy".A university spokesperson, who confirmed the voluntary redundancy scheme, said leaders tasked with ensuring the institution's financial and academic stability were working with the UCU "to explore all options". Dr Catello added: "The fact the LHU plans to drastically reduce the size of the Theology and Religious Studies academic team, from a headcount of six to two, is particularly telling."It shows that management is willing to sacrifice our institutional identity as a Christian and Ecumenical University just to make some savings from the academic staff budget."Part of the national Cathedrals Group of Universities, LHU said it was seeking to "ensure financial and academic stability".A university spokesperson said they appreciated it was a worrying time for staff and stressed that no staff member had been issued with a redundancy notice."The situation is still fluid," the representative added. "We await counter-proposals from the union and continue to consider suggestions and counter-proposals from individual staff."Our institution is not immune to the challenges facing the higher education sector across the UK and these proposals have been put forward to ensure financial and academic stability, while enabling us to continue to deliver excellent educational outcomes into the future." Stellantis offers voluntary redundancy scheme at Turin plant

MILAN, June 9 (Reuters) - Stellantis ( opens new tab has started a voluntary redundancy plan for 610 workers at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy, after introducing the scheme at other Italian facilities, the automaker said on Monday. Stellantis is so far cutting up to 1,600 staff in total across Italy this year through the voluntary redundancy scheme. At Mirafiori, the scheme "is aimed at supporting early retirement or different career opportunities," a company spokesperson said, adding workers at Mirafiori can sign up for it until the end of July. The Mirafiori plant will have a stable workforce from August to prepare for the launch of the new hybrid version of the Fiat 500 city car, the spokesperson said. Full-scale production of the new model is expected to start in November. Luigi Paone of Uilm, one of the unions which agreed the voluntary redundancy plan with Stellantis, said it would be aimed at workers closer to retirement age. The plan "should serve to pave the way for the hiring of young workers as we approach the production start-up of the hybrid 500," Paone said. Between April and May Stellantis agreed similar packages at other assembly plants in Italy, including Melfi and Pomigliano, for a total workforce reduction of up to 1,660 workers this year. The company has fewer than 40,000 staff in Italy, down from 55,000 in early 2021 when the group was created through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot maker PSA. Edinburgh University staff announce six days of strike action

Staff at the University of Edinburgh are to take strike action on 20 June in a dispute over proposed £140m budget one-day walkout will then be followed by five further days of strikes at the start of the new academic year in University and Colleges Union (UCU) said the strike was happening because the university's principal, Sir Peter Mathieson, has refused to rule out making compulsory Sir Peter told Holyrood's education committee the cuts, which include a £90m reduction in the wage bill, are "in the best interests of the university". About 350 staff have already accepted voluntary redundancy but the university has refused to rule out compulsory job argue the cuts, believed to be the largest ever in the history of Scottish higher education, are unnecessary given the extent of the university's cash reserves and assets in Edinburgh. The UCU members previously voted 84% in favour of industrial action. What are the dates of the Edinburgh University strike? As well as the day of industrial action on 20 June, which coincides with a university open day, staff will also take part in action short of will include working to contracted hours, not covering for absent colleagues, not undertaking voluntary activities and a boycott of administrative work related to implementing the UCU has stopped short of a marking and assessment boycott of students' work for dates are also set for 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 September. This coincides with the university's 'welcome week' when students arrive for the new academic Woodman, UCU branch president at the university, said: "Staff want a sustainable future for the university as much as anybody and we want to work with senior management to end this dispute. "But we're clear that the use of compulsory redundancies is unacceptable. With the resources and reserves held by the university it can easily afford to rule out sacking staff. " 'Taking pre-emptive action' Quizzed about the cuts at Holyrood's education committee, Sir Peter said he hoped future job losses could be made on a voluntary basis but could not rule out compulsory redundancies."We have not done so because we genuinely don't know if they are going to be necessary and it would be dishonest to pretend that we do know," he said."We're taking pre-emptive action to try and make sure the university remains in a sustainable position, we're not waiting to be in deficit before we do it."I'm confident the action we're taking now is in the best interests of the university."Sir Peter was also quizzed about his £350,000 salary and job-related perks. Last month the university's most senior academic body passed a vote of no confidence in its leadership over the financial position.
