Why Hong Kong's star cyclist Ceci Lee wants a different title this year
Hong Kong cyclist Ceci Lee Sze-wing has promised to go flat-out on Saturday in pursuit of a first time-trial success at the city's National Road Championships. Lee has won the road race at the past two editions, but finished runner-up behind Chloe Leung Wing-yee in last year's race against the clock. An Olympian last year on road and track, Lee has outgrown the local scene, and acknowledged Hong Kong titles were only 'a little target'. However, honing her time-trialling is a priority as she targets major future success in the velodrome, and specifically the omnium. 'If I master it, it's going to give me more weapons in the omnium, so it's very important for me,' Lee said. 'Most of the time, I've not done well in time-trialling, and I need to improve to become an all-rounder.' Ceci Lee said improving her time-trialling could help her in the omnium. Photo: Jonathan Wong Leung will start as favourite to claim her third straight time-trial title over the 15km (9.3-mile) course in Tai Po, where the men's and youth races will also be staged.

Evenepoel blows away field on stage four of Criterium du Dauphiné to take overall lead
Time-trial maestro Remco Evenepoel laid down a marker in the fourth stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné, winning the 17.4km race against the clock in style to move top of the overall classification. The 25-year-old Belgian tasted Olympic gold in the discipline last year and is also the double time-trial world champion, and showed his pedigree by blowing away a field containing Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. Evenpoel raced home 21 seconds ahead of second-placed Dane Vingegaard, with USA's Matteo Jorgenson a further 17 seconds back in third. Pogacar just missed the podium at 49 seconds behind Evenepoel, with German Florian Lipowitz fifth and Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel sixth. 'I'm surprised with the gaps,' Evenepoel said. 'It's quite big on quite a short TT so I'm very happy to have put over a second per kilometre on everybody, and even two seconds per kilometre on some. I'm feeling good and it's always nice to bring home a World Tour victory.' Evenepoel now slips on the leader's yellow jersey for the 77th edition of the Dauphiné, which will be decided in the last three stages in the Alps from Friday. His win was the 1,000th victory in the history of his Soudal Quick-Step team, following its creation in 2003 by Patrick Lefevere under the name Quick Step-Davitamon. 'I'm very happy with this victory, it's the 1,000th of the team,' Evenepoel added. 'It's a special day, I'm very proud to have done it.' Of the three frontrunners for the overall win, Pogacar now finds himself the least well-placed. Although the overall classification is far from set, the Slovenian is now in eighth place, 38 seconds behind Evenepoel, while Vingegaard is 16 seconds back in fifth. Thursday's stage five is a hilly 183km run from Saint-Priest to Macon.

Australia's Jay Vine thwarted by puncture in Giro d'Italia's 10th stage as Daan Hoole claims time trial
Jay Vine has been left cursing a puncture after a sixth-place finish in the 10th stage of the Giro d'Italia, won by shock victor Daan Hoole of the Netherlands. Vine was one of three Australians to make the top 10 on a day when rain undid the stage win chances of the grand classification big beasts in the 28.6 kilometre time trial from Lucca to Pisa. That allowed allowed Isaac del Toro to cling on to the maglia rosa despite finishing in 37th place. Crucially delayed by having to change to a spare bike, Vine (UAE Team Emirates) came in 37 seconds adrift of Hoole, with Lucas Plapp seven seconds and one place behind and Plapp's Jayco-AlUla teammate Michael Hepburn ninth, six seconds further back. Lidl-Trek's Hoole capitalised on better early conditions to finish in 32.30 minutes, ahead of British duo Josh Tarling (INEOS Grenadiers) and Ethan Hayter (Quickstep). It was the Dutch national time trial champion's first victory in a grand tour. "It's unbelievable. I mean it didn't sink in yet," Hoole said. "I was aiming for this day and I was feeling good all week, but to win, I never thought I would do this. "Of course, the GC guys, they had rain and that changed a lot, but I'm still happy I could beat Tarling in more or less the same conditions." Primoz Roglic (Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe), battling to recover from a crash two days ago and secure his second Giro title, fell again on the stage's recon ride, but recovered to make up more than a minute on his main challengers and move up to fifth. Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) came 22nd, making up a minute on Del Toro and staying second overall. The best-placed Australians in the GC are Michael Storer (Tudor) at 3 minutes, 14 seconds and Jayco-AlUla's Chris Harper, four seconds further adrift, at 14th and 15th respectively. The 11th stage will see the contest for the pink jersey heat up as the peloton takes on a mountainous 186km route from Viareggio to Castelnovo Ne' Monti. AAP

Daan Hoole wins Giro time trial as Ayuso and Roglic close on Del Toro
Dutchman Daan Hoole won stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia as rain hampered the later starters in Tuesday's time trial which ended with Mexico's Isaac del Toro clinging to the overall lead. The 26-year-old Lidl–Trek rider took advantage of dry roads to cover the 28.6km from Lucca to Pisa in 32 minutes 30 seconds for his first Grand Tour stage win, seven seconds faster than Britain's Josh Tarling. By the time the leading riders left the start gate rain was falling, making the corners slippery and reducing speeds. Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) finished in 36th place on the day, 2:22 slower than Hoole, but avoided any mishaps on the greasy surfaces to stay in the leader's pink jersey. READ MORE His general classification lead over Juan Ayuso was cut to 25 seconds, though, as his Spanish team-mate put in a strong showing to finish 22nd in the time trial. Overall favourite Primoz Roglic, bidding to claw back time lost in a nasty crash on Sunday, finished 1:15 down on Hoole's time but made up 19 seconds on Ayuso in the GC battle as he finished in a solid 17th place. The Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe rider climbed to fifth overall, 1:18 behind Del Toro. Slovenian Roglic had crashed in a pre-stage inspection of the course on Tuesday, but after his problems at the weekend, he is very much back in the hunt at the top of the leaderboard. Wednesday's 11th stage will see the battle for the maglia rosa heat up as the peloton faces a mountainous 186km route from Viareggio to Castelnovo Ne' Monti. Italy's Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) will start that stage 1:01 behind Del Toro with Britain's Simon Yates (Team Visma/Lease Bike) well-placed at 1:03.
