Severe thunderstorm threat for Northeast has 60 million people on alert
Parts of the Northeast are under the threat of severe thunderstorms on Thursday, with 60 million people on alert for severe weather. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect up and down the I-95 corridor through 9 p.m. Thursday for cities including Richmond, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City. The main threat with these storms will be widespread damaging wind gusts to 75 mph. Hail and tornadoes are also possible. A "large and extremely dangerous" tornado was located over Landenberg in southeastern Pennsylvania around 5 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said. In New York City, a teenager was struck by lightning in Central Park Thursday afternoon, police said. The teen is alert and conscious, police said. More than 500,000 customers across the Mid-Atlantic were without power as of Thursday evening, primarily in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, according to Nearly 600 flights have been canceled nationwide on Thursday, according to FlightAware, with New York's LaGuardia Airport the most impacted. Several parts of central, southern Sask. under severe thunderstorm watch
As of 2 p.m., several areas in central and southern Saskatchewan were under a severe thunderstorm watch or warning. (Photo source: Environment and Climate Change Canada) A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for several parts of central and southern Saskatchewan on Saturday, including Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. According to an alert from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms which may produce strong wind gusts, heavy rain, and damaging hail. The weather agency advises that some thunderstorms may become severe and advises people to go indoors if they hear thunder. Wind gusts up to 100 km/h and toonie-sized hail may be possible threats with these storms, ECCC said. ECCC continues to place more areas under the watch as the thunderstorm moves across the province. Some areas have also been issued a severe thunderstorm warning. Several parts of southwestern Saskatchewan were also under a severe thunderstorm watch or warning on Friday. Areas bordering central North Carolina under severe thunderstorm watch
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — With the risk of severe thunderstorms in central North Carolina Sunday, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for areas north, east and south of central N.C. The National Weather Service initially issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the southeastern areas of North Carolina, but then expanded that to cover more of the east and southeast. 'Clusters of storms will move east-northeastward across eastern North Carolina this afternoon,' the watch said, noting 65 mph wind gusts are possible along with 1-inch hail. Then, at 2:40 p.m., the weather service expanded the severe thunderstorm watch northward to include all of eastern North Carolina until 10 p.m. Sunday. RELATED: Interactive weather radar 'Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon, with mostly a damaging wind/some hail risk across far southern Virginia and northeast North Carolina,' forecasters said in the watch. Areas east of Edgecombe, Wilson, Wayne, and Sampson counties are in the watch area. To the north, Northampton County is in the severe thunderstorm watch along with Virginia counties along the border west to Danville. Essentially, central North Carolina is nearly encircled by the severe thunderstorm watch. Residents should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes. Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Upstate, western North Carolina
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for six Upstate counties and parts of western North Carolina. According to the National Weather Service, a severe thunderstorm was located nine miles west of Huntersville, or five miles osuth of Westport, moving east at 50 miles per hour. The National Weather Service said the storm could bring 60 miles per hour wind gusts and quarter-sized hail. Counties impacted by the watch include Cherokee, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, York, Polk and Rutherford. The thunderstorm watch remains in effect until noon Saturday.
