Bedford bowling coach identified as shooter in murder-suicide with 17-year-old

The Brief The Monroe County Sheriff determined the tragic death of a 17-year-old student at Beford High School as a murder-suicide. She was allegedly killed by a 33-year-old man who coached the school's bowling team. It's unclear if the two had a relationship. (FOX 2) - Police are investigating the discovery of two people with gunshot wounds in a Bedford Township home late last week as a murder-suicide. A 17-year-old student of Bedford Schools was allegedly killed by her bowling coach, the Monroe County Sheriff said Wednesday. Big picture view Monroe County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to 1641 W Sterns Road in Bedford Township on June 14 after a report of two dead people being discovered. Police identified the victim as Gwendolyn Faye Smith of Temperance, and the suspect as 33-year-old Ryan Jacob Leist. He allegedly shot her multiple times after gaining entry to her home before turning the gun on himself. "Gwendolyn's stepfather arrived home to find Gwendolyn and the suspect, with apparent gunshot wounds," Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said Wednesday. Both knew each other through the bowling team, with Smith competing while Leist was a coach who worked at the bowling alley Forest Lanes. He was an unpaid employee with the school district and was instead paid through the local bowling establishment. Goodnough did not know if the two had a prior relationship or why they were together over the weekend. The sheriff added that Leist had recently resigned from his position with the bowling alley, but did not know why. He also said there was no current evidence to indicate they were in a romantic relationship. There is communication between the two that the police are reviewing, however. Dig deeper The discovery was made just days before police were called to a separate shooting involving two teenagers enrolled at a nearby community school. "It's been tragic," Goodnough said through tears on Wednesday. "It's been a significant impact on our community. The tranquility - if you look at it from a general perspective, we're a farming community, rural, some urban areas as well." But for the most part, you know, we're 155,000 people. Everybody knows everybody," he added. What you can do Goodnough said the Temperance Bedford School District had activated its crisis team to assist anyone struggling with the circumstances. --- If you or a loved one is feeling distressed, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. An inmate of Virginia Beach Correctional Center died by suicide Wednesday evening, according to a sheriff's office news release. Michael Margulies, 49, was found unresponsive in a routine security check at around 5:40 p.m. Medical staff was called immediately and CPR was attempted on the inmate. Indiana man died of suicide during shootout with police in Chesterton, autopsy finds

A man shot himself in the head during an exchange of gunfire with police Wednesday morning outside a hotel in Chesterton, Indiana, an autopsy determined on Thursday. The Porter County Coroner's Office said 45-year-old Joseph Gerber, of Winamac, Indiana, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and his death was deemed a suicide. An autopsy revealed he also suffered multiple other gunshot wounds. Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, Chesterton police were called to the Hilton Garden Inn to investigate a complaint about a suspicious person at the hotel who was not a guest, according to Indiana State Police. Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson said, when two officers arrived at the scene, they had an interaction with Gerber, leading to an exchange of gunfire between Gerber and police. Gerber was killed, and a 33-year-old officer also was shot, and was taken to an Illinois hospital for treatment. Richardson said the officer's prognosis is good. "Our thoughts are with the officer and his family. They are most important to us right now," he said. Indiana State Police were investigating the shootout, and once the investigation is completed, police will turn over their findings to the Porter County Prosecutor's Office for review. Young dad's heartbreaking final warning revealed before he was found dead by stepfather after taking his own life

A YOUNG dad sent his friends a heartbreaking final warning before he took his own life, an inquest heard. Corey French, 19, was discovered dead by his stepfather outside his home in Swansea on Christmas Eve. 3 The inquest was told Corey, who had a three-month-old son, was fighting a secret battle with addiction issues including gambling. Corey had told his GP he had been misusing alcohol, cocaine and cannabis before his death. In a letter found after his death, he apologised for "having to go out like this". Corey said: "I can't do it anymore. I can't bare pain I'm going through. Don't do drugs, that's what has got me." The inquest heard Corey was a popular and talented young footballer who had been described by former teachers as a "bright boy who loved school sports and art". He was said to love his son and would "regularly show him off" to family members. Corey had taken on a job where he would work away from home during the week, which he told a family member he struggled with. But he had not indicated to friends, family or his girlfriend that he intended to harm himself. On the evening he died, Corey had gone out to meet friends for a few drinks to celebrate Christmas before being taken home by his girlfriend. His stepdad John later discovered the young dad dead outside the family home, the court heard. Senior coroner Aled Gruffydd returned a conclusion of suicide. Market town jeweller, 66, was found hanged next to his wife's dead body after 'rapid deterioration' of his mental health during Covid, inquest hearing is told

A historic market town jeweller was found hanged near to his wife's dead body at their home after his mental health declined following the 'anxieties and challenges' of the covid pandemic, a coroner was told today. The bodies of Christopher Stone-Houghton and his wife, Ruth, 60, were discovered following concerns over their welfare, a court heard. A pre-inquest hearing was told Mrs Stone-Houghton had suffered fatal head injury, while paramedics tried unsuccessfully to revive her husband. At the time police said they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the deaths. Mr Stone-Houghton, 66, had suffered a 'sudden, rapid and critical deterioration' in his mental health shortly before the incident, a coroner said. The family's jewellery business in Petersfield, Hampshire, had been forced to close during the pandemic. Rachel Spearing KC, assistant coroner for Hampshire, told a pre-inquest review hearing that post-mortem examinations found that Mr Stone-Houghton died as a result of suspension, and the cause of death for Mrs Stone-Houghton was a head injury. She said there had been multi-agency homicide and suicide reviews into the deaths. Winchester Coroner's Court heard that concerns were first raised around Mr Stone-Houghton's mental health at Christmas 2021 and 'active steps' were taken in April of the following year. Six weeks before his death in September 2022, the Portsmouth father was discharged after spending a month at an inpatient unit as a result of a 'serious incident'. A lawyer acting for the family told the pre-inquest review there were 'significant problems' with the hospital care given to Mr Stone-Houghton particularly around medication monitoring and whether he was masking paranoid and delusional thoughts from staff. Ms Spearing explained that the couple had been found at their home on September 14 but there was not any evidence of domestic abuse. She said that Mr Stone-Houghton had both inpatient and community care, and he was last seen two days before his death. The coroner said Mr Stone-Houghton felt 'anxieties and challenges during covid' and was 'experiencing suicidal ideation.' 'He received some inpatient care following a serious incident and was provided with some community care. 'In the months prior the family and friends had continued to express concerns about the care provided to (the Stone-Houghtons)'. She said there had been a 'sudden, rapid and critical deterioration' of Mr Stone-Houghton's mental health, but there was no evidence of domestic abuse. The full inquest - which will take place in December - will also look at the monitoring of Mr Stone-Houghton's gun licence, although a firearm was not used in the incident. In a previous tribute on a fundraising page the couple's son, Oliver, said he was 'inexplicably devastated' by the loss of his parents. In the message he explained that the jewellery business his father had worked at for 50 years and run for around 20 years had closed following the pandemic. Oliver Stone-Houghton said: 'It's hard to put into words how much I miss you both. 'I'm inexplicably devastated beyond belief.' In an online fundraising page posted last year the grieving son told how his father had no prior history of mental ill health when he was diagnosed with 'psychotic depression' in June 2022. He said this followed a 'period of rapidly declining mental health in the lead up to and the closure of a business he had been a part of for over 50 years.' Mr Stone-Houghton said that in the previous months, the coronavirus pandemic had 'removed many of the social ties Dad relied upon to relax and de-stress' and 'brought about incredibly stressful rule changes for the business and also impacted another business my parents ran together.' He went on to say that his mother was 'killed' and his father 'ended his own life' during 'another psychotic episode' - just a day after the couple had enjoyed a day out with friends.
