Farmer pleads guilty to animal cruelty after cattle and sheep found housed with carcasses
A farmer has pleaded guilty to three charges of animal cruelty in relation to sheep and cattle under his care who were housed in sheds with multiple dead carcasses at a holding in west Wicklow two years ago. Michael Mooney (42), of Logstown, Valleymount, Co Wicklow, was charged with three counts of causing unnecessary suffering to farm animals on lands at Crossage, Dunlavin, Co Wicklow, on March 20th, 2023, contrary to Section 12 (1) (a) of the Animal Health and Welfare Act, 2013. Advertisement A sitting of Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court heard a flock of around 18 sheep including ewes and lambs were penned into a shed with no water and which contained the carcass of a ram. The animals were also showing signs of respiratory distress and sheep scab. A second charge related to cattle which were found in another shed with multiple carcasses in various stages of decomposition. The court heard the bodies of two animals were partially submerged in around one foot of slurry. A third charge related to cattle kept in a separate shed where multiple animal carcasses were also found. Although these cattle did have access to forage and water, the court heard that they were 'suffering and not thriving.' Judge Terence O'Sullivan remanded the accused on bail to a sitting of the same court in October when Mooney will be sentenced.

Ellen DeGeneres is giving fans a glimpse inside her home in the English countryside. In an Instagram post shared on Monday, the 67-year-old former talk-show host shared videos of the inside of her home, which she shares with her wife, Portia de Rossi, after their sheep found their way inside. 'Our sheep keep coming inside,' she wrote in the caption. 'To be fair, we do have a piece of furniture that looks like a sheep, but that one doesn't try to eat our rugs.' In the first clip, the sheep can be seen coming inside via a floor-to-ceiling glass sliding door which had been left open. The view from the room featured a gravel courtyard with big bushes and trees, with a grass field visible in the background. In the clip, the sheep can be seen getting a bit too close to the couple's dog, Kid, who leapt from his bed and quickly ran away from the flock of sheep. De Rossi can be heard in the background asking, 'They're coming inside?' to which DeGeneres responded, 'Yeah, they're inside.' A second clip was shot in a different part of the home, which also has floor-to-ceiling glass siding doors and large cement-style slab flooring. De Rossi can be heard in the video gently encouraging the sheep to go back outside, and praising one as it listens to her. The couple moved to the Cotswolds in England in November 2024, after selling their home in Montecito, California in August of that year. A second home owned by the couple in the idyllic Santa Barbara town was later sold in 2025. 'Ellen was in England house hunting in the beginning of October,' an insider told People in November 2024. 'She ended up finding a house that she loved and purchased it shortly after.' Not long after moving into the home, DeGeneres shared a clip on Instagram, humorously hinting she isn't cut out for a specific household chore. She posted a video of herself attempting to mow the grass surrounding her home in the countryside. The video began with the talk-show host successfully mowing a small section of grass, with the words 'how it started' written on the screen. It progressed to a video of DeGeneres struggling to drive the lawnmower uphill, as someone had to help her by pushing the mower from behind. The on-screen caption then changed to 'How it ended.' 'Portia thought it would be fun to film my first time on the mower,' DeGeneres wrote in the caption. 'She was right.'

Ellen DeGeneres shared yet another brief look at her life in the English countryside after fleeing the U.S. with her wife Portia de Rossi. The 67-year-old comedienne and her 52-year-old wife sold their property in Carpinteria, California for a whopping $96 million in August 2024. Just a few months later, they both left America to a home they previously purchased in the Cotswolds region of the U.K., after the election of Donald Trump. Back in April, she shared a rare glimpse of her new abode, sharing a snap of Portia taking a picture herself of a rainbow. Over the last few months, she's been sharing videos and images of the new sheep the couple had acquired for their farm, and it seems they prefer the home to the land. She shared a new video on Instagram Monday that showed a few of the sheep milling about inside their home. The first part of the video showed four sheep inside the home - with the floor-to-ceiling doors wide open. One of the sheep even tried sniffing around the couple's small dog, but the pooch clearly wasn't a fan, quickly getting out of her tiny dog bed and scampering away from the other sheep as well. Portia can be heard in the background saying, 'They're inside?' A calm Ellen responded, 'Yeah, they're inside.' The second part of the video was filmed by Portia, who caught one of the sheep entering their home, seemingly named 'Bernie.' 'Um... oh no. Bernie, Bernie, you can't be in here... that's a good girl,' Portia said, moving closer to the sheep to usher it out of the home. The video shared Monday had over 54K likes, and came a few days after she shared another video showing the sheep trying to get into their chicken coop. 'These... this is what's happening now,' Ellen began in the video, before turning the camera to show the sheep invading her chicken coop. 'Hey! That's not your food! Hey! Get out of there. That's not your food, come on, that's for chickens,' she told her flock of sheep. While she has been in the U.K. for months, she was most recently the target of many jokes at the hands of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. He was hosting the annual Robin Hood charity gala at the Javits Center in New York City, when he took aim at Ellen. MacFarlane joked that she, 'left right after the election, and now she's the nicest person in France.' During a stand-up show last year, DeGeneres addressed the claims of her being mean, explaining, 'I can be demanding and impatient and tough. I am a strong woman. I am many things, but I am not mean.'

Woman scrambles to create 'forever home' for 180 sheep
A woman has told the BBC she is scrambling to build a "forever home" for 180 sheep and other farm Hubbard, who runs Lotus Lamb and Sheep Sanctuary, said she has to leave her "beautiful, idyllic" site in Woodmancote, West Sussex, by 11 July. Though an "incredible" donor has withdrawn part of her pension and bought the sanctuary some land, the 53-year-old said she needs £20,000 and other items to ready the site for the rescue sheep and other in-need animals. "We are just begging people for help," she added. "These animals are sentient beings. They feel. They grieve. They love. They cry." 'Sheep are lovely' The sanctuary - named after Lotus, a "very special" sheep that used to live inside her house - is home to many animals that have been neglected and abused "in the most horrendous way", said Ms Hubbard. She told the BBC she had rescued sheep that had been left in a field without shelter during winter and starved of water and food."If that was a field of dogs, everybody would be in uproar but because it is sheep people just go, oh, its just sheep." Ms Hubbard added: "Sheep are lovely. They give so much." "Some don't always want to snuggle, but they'll sit with you. They're just incredible." Another animal at the shelter, she continued, is a pig called Clarence that escaped a local slaughterhouse and lived wild in Henfield. He escaped death a second time after Ms Hubbard said she intervened and took him in when a local landowner planned to shoot him. "We literally want to help every animal we can," she said.
