Eruption of Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano creates ash plume visible 90 miles away

(AP Photo) LEMBATA, Indonesia — Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano in south-central Indonesia erupted Tuesday, spewing towering columns of hot ash into the air. Authorities raised the eruption alert to the highest level and expanded the danger zone to 8 kilometres (about 5 miles) from the crater. Indonesia's Geology Agency said in a statement it recorded the volcano unleashing 10,000 metres (about 32,800 feet) of thick grey clouds on Tuesday afternoon, following significant volcanic activities, including 50 in two hours, rather than the usual daily 8 to 10 activities. The ashes expanded into a mushroom-shaped ash cloud that could be seen from the cities located 90 kilometers (about 56 miles) to 150 kilometers (nearly 93 miles) from the mountain. There were no casualties reported. Residents were warned to be vigilant about heavy rainfall triggering lava flows in rivers originating from the volcano. An eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki in November killed nine people and injured dozens. It also erupted in May. The 1,584-metre (5,197-foot) mountain is a twin volcano with Mount Lewotobi Perempuan in the district of Flores Timur. Indonesia is an archipelago of 270 million people with frequent seismic activity. It has 120 active volcanoes and sits along the 'Ring of Fire,' a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Mystery of the dark markings on Mars could finally be solved

Mysterious dark streaks on Mars, observed since the 1970s, are likely due to wind and dust activity rather than water, according to new research. Researchers used a machine learning algorithm to analyze 500,000 streaks from over 86,000 NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter images, creating a global Martian map. The study found that recurring slope lineae (RSLs) are not associated with factors suggesting liquid or frost, but rather with above-average wind speed and dust deposition. Older slope streaks likely form when dust slides off slopes due to seismic activity, winds, or meteoroid impacts, appearing near recent impact craters. The findings cast doubt on the interpretation of slope streaks and RSLs as habitable environments, suggesting a dry origin of formation.

BREAKING NEWS Nevada rocked by earthquake swarm with the strongest reaching nearly 5 magnitude

Nevada has experienced an uptick in seismic activity over the last 24 hours. The US Geological Survey (USGS) detected seven earthquakes, with the largest measuring a 4.8 magnitude, that hit at 7:16am ET near Caliente. The other tremors, starting Thursday and continuing into Friday, ranged from 1.1 magnitude to 3.3 magnitude. The 4.8 magnitude is the latest earthquake to hit, with shaking detected as far south as Las Vegas, which sits more than 150 miles south. It was likely caused by tectonic activity along one of the many fault systems in the Basin and Range Province, a region known for stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust. The USGS detect a 3.3 magnitude earthquake Thursday about 14 miles northeast of Nellis Air Force Base. This was followed by two smaller tremors just minutes later. Nellis Air Force Base tested US nuclear weapons above ground during the 1950s and 1960s, but testing moved underground until all operations ceased in 1992. Nevada is the nation's third-most seismically active state, ranking behind only California and Alaska. This is a developing story... More updates to come

Ivanhoe Mines stock drops as ‘seismic activity' halts Congo copper project

Ivanhoe Mines ( shares fell steeply on Monday as the company pulled its 2025 production and financial guidance for a mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where 'seismic activity' has made it unsafe to work underground. Ivanhoe shares fell as much as 18.4 per cent on the Toronto Stock Exchange with the Monday trading session. Shares were down 17.04 per cent at $10.66 per share at 2:12 p.m. ET. In a news release on Monday, Vancouver-based Ivanhoe says seismic activity at its Kakula mine has continued 'over the past few days,' prompting a suspension of underground activities on May 25. Ivanhoe says geotechnical experts are working to determine the cause and effect of the activity. 'We are working around the clock with the world's foremost geotechnical experts to establish the cause of the issues we faced and how we will resolve them,' CEO Marna Cloete stated on Monday. While Ivanhoe says its nearby Kamoa Mine is continuing normal operations, the company withdrew its Kamoa-Kakula's production and cost guidance for 2025, along with the ramp-up schedule for its direct-to-blister smelter. "I remind readers that SpaceX - today responsible for approximately 90 per cent of total payload launched into space by humanity - did not attain this status without numerous setbacks,' Ivanhoe founder and executive co-chairman Robert Friedland stated in Monday's news release. 'We approach our operations at Kamoa-Kakula with the same mindset.' According to RBC Capital Markets, Ivanhoe anticipated full-year 2025 production of between 520,000 and 580,000 tonnes of copper from its Kamoa-Kakula complex at a cash cost of US$1.65 to US$1.85 per pound. 'Damage to pumping infrastructure has also led to increased water inflow into the mine so the focus now is on dewatering activity and additional equipment is being added to increase pumping capacity,' analyst Sam Crittenden wrote in a note to clients. 'This leaves uncertainty as we await further updates to determine the potential impact on production.' Crittenden maintains a $24 price target on Ivanhoe shares, with an 'outperform' rating on the stock. Jeff Lagerquist is a senior reporter at Yahoo Finance Canada.
