How to Take a Screenshot on a Chromebook
If there's one thing we've learned over years of testing new technology at CNET, it's how taking a screenshot differs from device to device and operating system to operating system. This includes Chromebooks and ChromeOS. However, it isn't too difficult to learn and is something you should know how to do. Windows 11: 4 quick ways to take a screenshot on your PC Read more: 10 Chromebook Productivity Tricks From capturing screenshots and safekeeping an idea to a partial screen capture that can help someone from your family navigate their device, the screenshot feature on a Chromebook can do a lot. Here are two ways to launch the Screen Capture tool, how to use it and where to find your captures once you take them. Screenshot on a Chromebook with a keyboard shortcut Josh Goldman/CNET To launch the Screen Capture toolbar, you must press a three-key shortcut: Shift+Ctrl+Show Windows. The Show Windows key is up on the keyboard's top row with an icon that looks like a window with two windows stacked behind it. Just press those three and the toolbar will pop up at the bottom of the screen. Also, if you simply want to take a fast shot of your entire screen, as opposed to a specific region or window, you can simply press Ctrl+Show Windows. These Chromebook keyboard shortcuts will work on any model. However, some Chromebooks have a Screen Capture key on the keyboard's top row. Look for a key with a camera icon on it, usually a rectangle with a circle in the center. When pressed it will automatically launch the tool -- no key combo necessary. Screenshot on a Chromebook from Quick Settings A Screen Capture shortcut is right in the settings. Josh Goldman/CNET I have a hard time remembering shortcut keys, so I'm always looking for another option. Luckily, Google added a shortcut button to the Quick Settings panel for screenshots so I never have to think about what keys I need again. On Chrome's Shelf, click on the time to pop up the Quick Settings menu. Just click or tap on Screen Capture and the toolbar will launch. How to use the screenshot toolbar You can take photos of your screen or record a video clip. Josh Goldman/CNET The Screen Capture toolbar not only lets you take screenshots but can be used to capture screen recordings as well. The toggle for going from stills to video is on the far left of the toolbar. To the right of that toggle, you have options to take a full-screen screenshot, a partial screenshot with a specific area you define or a screenshot of a specific window. These work for photos and video. Also, clicking on the settings cog on the toolbar lets you turn on or off the mic while recording your screen, making adding narration to your captures easy. Also read: Windows 10 and 11: Easily Take Screenshots on Your PC Where screenshots are saved on a Chromebook When you take a screenshot or recording it's immediately accessible from the Clipboard, which stores the last five things you saved to it. To view what's available, simply press the Everything button (aka the Search key) plus V. Your Chromebook also has a holding spot on the Shelf called Tote. It's where you'll find your most recent screenshots. You can pin files to Tote, too, which means you can keep an important screenshot ready to open without searching for it. Screenshots that are no longer saved on the Clipboard can be found in your files. Just open the Files app on your Chromebook and you'll find your screenshots in the Images folder and screen recordings in the Videos folder.

Apple's New Visual Intelligence Function Will Look Up Anything You Screenshot
See something interesting while scrolling on your iPhone? A new feature in iOS 26 will make it easier to learn more about it with updates to Apple's Visual Intelligence announced Monday at the company's annual WWDC event. Visual Intelligence can already use the company's Apple Intelligence models to identify what you see in the real world and photograph with the camera. The new feature is that you can take a screenshot of anything and use Apple Intelligence to do things like ask ChatGPT about it, add an event to your calendar or search for a product using one of your apps. Watch this: WWDC 2025: Everything Revealed in 10 Minutes 09:37 "You can search and take action across your apps using anything you're viewing," Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, said. The feature will live within the same screen where you would edit or share a screenshot, with buttons at the bottom for different ways to use generative AI features. Simply use the same buttons you would to take a screenshot. You can look up a product you see on social media with a screenshot and go straight to Etsy to find something like it. Screenshot by CNET The feature is reminiscent of Google's Circle to Search, which is available on Android devices and on iPhones through the Google and Chrome Apps. Google introduced that feature last year. Read more: Everything You Missed at WWDC 2025: iOS 26, Liquid Glass Design and More The biggest announcement from Apple at WWDC was its new design for all of its platforms, using a system it called "Liquid Glass." That will bring more transparency into the display of your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Other announcements included an AI-driven live translation function that will work in your phone and messaging apps and new ways to create emoji, including using ChatGPT's image generation models.

Signal's new Windows update prevents the system from capturing screenshots of chats
Signal said today that it is updating its Windows app to prevent the system from capturing screenshots, thereby protecting the content that is on display. The company said that this new "screen security" setting is enabled by default on Windows 11. Signal said that this new feature is designed to protect users' privacy from Microsoft's Recall feature, which was announced last year. Recall captures screenshots of the system continuously to remember all of your activities, so you can scroll back in time to remember what you were looking at. While the company paused the rollout of the feature last year after backlash, Microsoft started testing it again in April through the Windows Preview Channel. Microsoft has made the feature opt-in and has also added a way to pause it anytime. Signal said that despite these changes, the feature still captures content that may be sensitive. Signal said that when you are trying to take a screenshot with the new screen security setting enabled, you will just get a blank screen. The company also warned that when the setting is enabled, some functions, such as screen readers, might not work as intended. You can turn off the setting through Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen security. The app will show you a warning when you are trying to disable this option, and you will have to click on Confirm to complete the action. This is to prevent you from accidentally turning the feature off while trying to adjust other settings. "We hope that the AI teams building systems like Recall will think through these implications more carefully in the future. Apps like Signal shouldn't have to implement a 'one weird trick' in order to maintain the privacy and integrity of their services without proper developer tools," Signal said in a blog post.
