Changes coming to Browns Hill Road stemming from deadly motorcycle crash

Changes are on the way to Browns Hill Road near the Homestead Grays Bridge stemming from a deadly motorcycle crash that happened late last month. 33-year-old Robert Brimage was killed in a motorcycle crash along Browns Hill Road on May 29 after crashing with another vehicle that was traveling in the same direction. In the wake of the deadly crash, the City of Pittsburgh's Vision Zero Fatal Crash Response Team completed a site visit to the scene of where the crash occurred and will be making a number of changes to Browns Hill Road to help prevent future crashes. The city says that during overnight hours, traffic lights at the intersections of Imogene Road and Parkview Boulevard will "revert to red." Instead of staying green, traffic lights at those intersections will respond to real-time conditions instead of staying green to help cut down on chances for drivers to speed. At those intersections, the yellow and red phases of the traffic signal rotations will be changed to help cut down on rear-end crashes and reflective plates will be added to give more nighttime visibility to drivers. Lastly, pedestrians at the intersection of Browns Hill Road and Imogene Road will be given a 5-second head start when crossing the street. It's unclear how quickly the changes will be implemented.

UAE midday break for workers starts

The UAE's midday break for outdoor workers came into effect on Sunday. The break runs until September 15 and prohibits work under direct sunlight and in open-air spaces between 12.30pm and 3pm. The annual initiative, overseen by the ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, was first introduced in 2004 and gives employees respite from the scorching summer heat. Companies will be fined Dh5,000 for each time a worker breaches the midday ban and up to a maximum of Dh50,000 if several cases take place. The safety measures came back into force after the UAE has seen climate records tumble. The country has recorded its hottest April and May since records began. 'Now in its 21st consecutive year, the Midday Break is rooted in a sustainability-centred approach that the UAE implements in line with its commitment to providing a safe working environment as per international best practices and occupational health and safety standards, protecting workers from injuries and illnesses caused by working in high temperatures during the summer months,' the ministry said on social media. The ministry will be inspecting workplaces across the country over the next few months to monitor implementation of rule. The ministry said 51 infractions were uncovered last year as a result of 134,000 inspections, down from 96 the previous year.

Sandpoint Beach is closed indefinitely. Here's what you need to know

The City of Windsor says there will be measures in place at the city's only public beach this summer to make sure people stay out of the water. City councillors voted unanimously on Monday to close Sandpoint Beach for safety reasons pending the outcome of a coroner's report into a 15-year-old swimmer's death last month. In a statement Tuesday, the city explained the steps it's taking to prevent people from swimming. There will be staff on site to inform the public of the closure, more signage explaining that the water is dangerous, and fencing to close off access to the water. While the beach closure is indefinite and effective immediately, the city says it could take until June 24 for all of these measures to be in place. The parkland, playground and sand will remain accessible to the public. The city says the decision was made for safety reasons following nine drowning deaths since the beach opened in 1980. An area just west of the beach, where several people have drowned, is notorious for dangerous currents. Signs and fencing are already in place in that area. "We understand how much Sandpoint Beach means to residents and families, especially during the summer months. However, safety must always be the priority," Michael Chantler, Windsor's commissioner of community services, said in a media release. "The Parks and Recreation team is moving quickly and with urgency to put safety measures in place to protect the community. We are already on site, developing signage, arranging for additional fencing, and speaking directly with visitors. We want people to know we're taking this seriously, and we're doing everything we can — right now — to prevent further tragedy." The city has approved a $15-million master plan to relocate the beach a short distance to the east and upgrade the amenities in the area. Councillors expressed hope that the coroner's investigation into the most recent death will shed light on the safety risks in the area. Council will revisit the master plan for Sandpoint once the outcome of that investigation is known.

(Bernama pic) IPOH : Perak's Sultan Nazrin Shah wants preventive measures to be implemented given the recent frequency of fatal road accidents. According to the comptroller of the Perak royal household, Meor Hezbullah Meor Abd Malik, Sultan Nazrin said this morning's accident, which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, should serve as a lesson. He ordered the authorities to identify existing weaknesses for improvement, especially in terms of law enforcement and regulation, so that such tragic accidents can be prevented from recurring. 'While it is a fact that life and death are determined by the Almighty, His Royal Highness is of the view that God urges humans to strive and make efforts to protect themselves from threats, calamities, dangers and disasters,' Meor Hezbullah said. He added that Sultan Nazrin expressed his deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims. Earlier, Sultan Nazrin and Raja Permaisuri Tuanku Zara Salim, who is also UPSI chancellor, were at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital to console the families of victims and receive a briefing on the tragedy from the hospital.
