(Photo by Masatoshi Ida) MASATOSHI IDA WINDSOR, U.K. -- The second running of the FT Nikkei U.K. Ekiden took place on Friday starting in this London suburb, with Kyoto's Ritsumeikan University taking the championship in a field of 31 universities and companies from both Japan and the U.K. Ekiden is a long-distance relay race format that originated in Japan. The U.K. Ekiden was started in 2024 with the aim of spreading the race's culture there. Based on the Hakone Ekiden, one of the most famous yearly university races in Japan, the U.K. version is sponsored by the Financial Times and Nikkei.

Suzuki and Crow-Armstrong homer as the NL Central-leading Cubs knock off the Brewers 5-3
CHICAGO (AP) — Seiya Suzuki and Pete Crow-Armstrong homered, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 on Tuesday night in a matchup of NL Central contenders. Kyle Tucker had three hits as Chicago improved to 4-1 on a 10-game homestand. Matt Shaw lined a run-scoring double, and Ben Brown (4-5) pitched five innings of two-run ball. The Cubs upped their division lead to 6 1/2 games over the second-place Brewers, who won the NL Central in each of the past two years. The Brewers had a 2-1 lead before the Cubs rallied in the fifth against Chad Patrick (3-7). Ian Happ reached on a one-out walk and Tucker doubled before Suzuki connected for his 18th homer, driving a sinker into the bleachers in left-center. Brown allowed six hits, struck out five and walked two in his first win since May 2. The right-hander improved to 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in three career starts against Milwaukee, striking out 19 in 18 innings. The Brewers closed to 4-3 on Joey Ortiz's single in the sixth. But Brad Keller and Caleb Thielbar each pitched an inning before Daniel Palencia handled the ninth for his seventh save. Crow-Armstrong helped Thielbar with a diving catch on Brice Turang's liner in the eighth. Then he led off the bottom half of the inning with a 452-foot drive off the scoreboard in right for his 19th homer, sparking another round of 'P-C-A!' chants from the crowd. Key moment The Brewers had a chance to tie the game in the seventh, putting a runner on third with two down. But Rhys Hoskins struck out swinging. Up next Jacob Misiorowski (1-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his second major league start for Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Jameson Taillon (7-3, 3.48 ERA) goes for his sixth consecutive win for Chicago. ___

With first place on the line, the Japanese superstar went long in the first and sixth innings of the bounce-back win for Los Angeles, which moves it one game clear of San Francisco atop the National League West standings. Ohtani snapped a 10-game streak without a homer when he launched his seventh leadoff bomb of the season, sending it an estimated 419 feet to right center field off a 2-1 cutter from right-hander Landen Roupp (4-5). "The first at-bat of the game is when the opposing pitchers are most aggressive," Ohtani said. "In the later innings of a close game with a runner in a scoring position, a lot of pitchers and teams tend to throw outside the strike zone more. The first inning is when you have the best chance to swing at pitches inside the zone." The home team piled on the runs early at Dodger Stadium, going up 6-0 when Ohtani scored on Will Smith's sacrifice fly before Roupp was removed with two out in the second. Ohtani led off the sixth with his NL-best 25th home run off right-hander Tristan Beck, belting his full-count curve 384 feet over right center. The homer marked his third game with multiple home runs this season. The two-way player has been making steady progress toward his return to the mound, gradually intensifying his workload while pitching in simulated games. "Throwing a lot of pitches in a simulated game is quite demanding. But it's the path I have to take," he said. "I want to concentrate and coordinate both (batting and pitching)." Clayton Kershaw (2-0) got the win after allowing only three hits over seven scoreless frames. The Giants scored all their runs after Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts sent out infielder Enrique Hernandez to pitch in the ninth.
