A real-life matchmaker's verdict on Materialists and his advice for singles wanting to meet that perfect match
Joseph Dixon says he has to hold himself back from "yelling and screaming" as he watches the romantic comedy Materialists. "This is my life, my life," Mr Dixon told ABC News about his reaction to the film. "Someone understands. Mr Dixon is the CEO and lead matchmaker at Bachelors Inc, a matchmaking agency for "highly eligible" bachelors of the United States. And while the director of Materialists, Celine Song, told the ABC's Screen Show she worked as a matchmaker for six months, Mr Dixon has more than 12 years of experience in the industry. In Materialists, Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) plays Lucy, a young, ambitious matchmaker working in New York City, who is caught up in a love triangle with her perfect match Harry (Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect ex John (Chris Evans). Mr Dixon, who used to work as a real estate broker, says while some movies grossly misinterpret people's careers, Materialists was true to life. "It was a great balance," he said. "I loved it because it talked about real life as far as a matchmaker is concerned. "I've been a married matchmaker, I've been a single matchmaker, so I totally understand everything that she was going through as a matchmaker as well. "It was a really, really good movie. I like the storyline. The acting was good. Mr Dixon says there are often two main reasons people choose the matchmaking route. "Most of my clients, bachelors and bachelorettes, they are all career-driven. "They have a lot going on, [they are] highly successful, so they don't have access to just go out and meet people like they used to, because they are busy. "I have doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs, business owners, dentists, athletes, entertainers, they all have busy lives, so they do want to meet good people that are on their level. "And the convenience of matchmaking, [the movie] does touch on that as well where a person can come to say, 'this is exactly what I'm looking for' and possibly be introduced to those people." Mr Dixon says, as depicted in the film, matchmaking is about more than just making introductions. "It's also about helping our clients understand what they truly want [and] what they truly need in a partner as well. "We talk about values and alignment, rather than just surface-level attraction." Mr Dixon says the movie addresses unrealistic expectations, which is something he deals with on a daily basis. "If you tell me you're looking for what we call, she said it in the movie, a unicorn, and that unicorn has to live within a 5-mile [8 kilometre] radius of you, that may be an unrealistic expectation because it's all about the access and what the dating pool may look like," Mr Dixon said. "I think some people do come to matchmaking just thinking that we have a genie in the closet somewhere. "And we just go in the closet and rub it and out comes this perfect man or woman. "I tell people all the time, 'What you see in the dating pool is what you see in matchmaking as well.' "The good thing about matchmaking is that we are people connectors." He says he is sometimes blown away by what people come to him looking for. "Sometimes it boggles my mind, a laundry list of things that a person is looking for. "But by the time they work with me, because I'm a very, very forthcoming, blunt person and if you're able to take honesty, then I will give it to you." It is hard to go past the title of the film, and Mr Dixon says high-end matchmaking can be very materialistic. "Most of our clients are well-to-do, well-educated, [and have] great careers," Mr Dixon said. "They have material possessions themselves, so they don't want to dumb down their life for someone else, for the most part." He says this materialism can get in the way. "I love love," he said. "I've always been a hopeful romantic and I think with love anything is possible and I think a lot of people miss out on their soulmate and miss out on the right person for them because they have a checklist of things that this person has to have when it comes just material things. "We're not even talking about the intangibles, or the characteristics or the personality or the morality of the person, we're just talking about pure material." He says true love is what makes a relationship last the distance and should be the main foundation in any marriage. "I think when you find someone that you're in love with and they are in love with you as well, that's a bond that is hard to break," Mr Dixon said. Mr Dixon says, as the movie depicts, connections require self-awareness and vulnerability. "You have to be vulnerable to find love," he said. "The more vulnerable you get with a person, the more you really allow them to see you for who you are." His advice for those wanting love? "Don't come to a matchmaker with a Santa Claus list. "What are the top three things that you feel will make you really happy in a relationship, and then we'll start from there."

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Are Planning to Watch This Classic Rom-Com Together Soon
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have kept their extremely high-profile relationship more quiet as of late—which means they could be taking part in more movie nights than normal. One movie atop the couple's to-watch list? The classic romantic comedy Pretty Woman, released in 1990 and starring Julia Roberts (as if we had to tell you). Kelce mentioned that was on their watch list in the June 18 episode of his podcast, 'New Heights,' which he co-hosts with his brother Jason Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce head out for dinner for date nights—and sometimes they stay in and watch movies. Interestingly, thanks to Kelce and his 'New Heights' podcast, we now know exactly what film the couple of two years will likely be watching on their next night in. Speaking with his brother Jason Kelce on the June 18 episode of the show, Kelce said that, when it comes to their next movie night together, 'We mentioned Pretty Woman,' referencing the iconic 1990 Julia Roberts film. 'That's been on me and Tay's movie list for a while,' he added. 'I'd be down to watch that.' One of the most high-profile couples in the world has been pretty low-key for most of 2025, following Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl loss in February. Save for a few dinner dates here and there—and a recent outing to watch home hockey on June 12—Swift and Kelce have mostly been laying low and out of the public eye, the perfect time for the aforementioned movie night. As Kelce gears up for the upcoming Chiefs season by training in Boca Raton, Florida, he will no doubt have Swift's support for what might end up being Kelce's last season in the National Football League. 'Having that confidence and comfort off the field and all the support I could ever ask for in the stadium—that's the beauty of being in a very strong relationship is that you get that support to be able to come in and focus on your craft,' Kelce said on a January 15 appearance on the Stephen A. Smith Show. 'Focus on being the best version of you.' In 2023, Swift told TIME of her relationship that 'When you say a relationship is public, that means I'm going to see him do what he loves, we're showing up for each other, other people are there, and we don't care. The opposite of that is that you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you're seeing someone. And we're just proud of each other.' While Swift and Kelce haven't been as front-facing as they have been in past, well, eras (sorry—had to), that doesn't mean anything is amiss, a source told Us Weekly. 'They are making fewer public appearances together because [their relationship] brings too much unwanted attention,' the insider said. 'There isn't trouble in paradise.' As for movie nights, the couple might also add the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2 to the list—Kelce has a cameo in the sequel to Adam Sandler's original 1996 Happy Gilmore, which is out on Netflix on July 25. That's a full month away—plenty of time to watch Pretty Woman before that. Read the original article on InStyle

Like Materialists? Watch these 5 rom-coms now
The romantic comedy is not the dominant box office genre that it once was, but every once in a while, we still get something that fits that mode. Materialists isn't a rom-com, exactly, but it definitely alludes to a lot of the pillars of the genre. Given the ways Materialists alludes to and plays with the formula of a romantic comedy, we found other movies that fit a similar mold that you can watch now. They might not be straightforward romantic comedies, but sometimes, that's better. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Big Sick (2017) The Big Sick plays out as a rom-com, at least at first. Kumail Nanjiani plays a version of himself before he was famous as he meets and falls in love with the woman who would become his wife. The two of them break up after she discovers that he's going to have to go through an arranged marriage, and then she falls into a coma. Because the breakup is so recent, he spends time with both her and her parents as they deal with the uncertainty of her future and of their relationship. It's a remarkable, sad, deeply funny movie, and one that adheres closer to the beats of real life than it does to a Hollywood script. You can watch The Big Sick on Amazon Prime Video. High Fidelity (2000) High Fidelity is a romantic comedy, to be sure, but one that uses the structure of a top-five list to go through every heartbreak its main character has ever experienced. The movie follows a music obsessive who translates everything into a list and who is much more of a narcissist than he realizes. As he recounts his history of breakups, he comes to appreciate one relationship, in particular, but the movie is as much about his own self-improvement as it is about who he ends up with. It's telling that the movie doesn't end with a kiss but instead with our main character learning something about a person he'd almost completely dismissed. You can watch High Fidelity on Hulu. The Worst Person in the World (2021) The Worst Person in the World is the artiest film on this list. It's also the only one in another language. Like The Materialists, it's all about a love triangle. The film focuses on a young woman living in Norway who can't decide who she wants to be. She takes up numerous careers, even as she finds herself flitting from one relationship to another. The movie's title, though, might lead you to believe this woman is far worse than she is. She might be a little bit flaky, but thanks to a remarkable performance from Renate Reinsve, she certainly isn't the worst person in the world. You can watch The Worst Person in the World on Tubi. Sabrina (1954) One of the greatest love triangle movies, Sabrina follows the daughter of a chauffeur who catches the eye of two wealthy brothers. Although she initially forms a close relationship with the younger of the two brothers, she's eventually drawn to the older and more serious man. Featuring a trio of great performances from Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, and Audrey Hepburn, Sabrina is a charming comedy that, thanks to the expert direction of Billy Wilder, feels as carefully calibrated as any ever made. You can watch Sabrina on Amazon Prime Video. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997) Julia Roberts was already a bona fide movie star by the time My Best Friend's Wedding hit theaters, but this remains the most interesting romantic comedy she ever made. Roberts herself plays a woman who slowly realizes she's the villain after she learns that her lifelong best friend is getting married, and she realizes she's in love with him. As she heads to the wedding with the explicit goal of breaking up her friend's marriage, she begins to realize that his fiancée is not the evil harpy she wanted her to be, and the best thing for her to do might be nothing at all. Deeply funny and just a little sad, My Best Friend's Wedding has it all. You can watch My Best Friend's Wedding on Pluto TV.
