Scientists Discover Startling Trick to Defeat Insomnia
Insomnia is a curse we wouldn't wish on our worst enemy — and scientists have discovered a startlingly simple lifestyle change that appears to be very statistically effective at preventing it. In a new study published in the journal Sleep Health, researchers from Columbia and the University of Chicago report that eating a full day's serving worth of fruits and vegetables strongly appears to help people sleep more soundly throughout the night. Interrupted sleep, which is known as "sleep fragmentation" to researchers, has been found to induce a litany of grim health outcomes ranging from heart failure to diabetes and cognitive problems to cognitive dysfunction. One major culprit might be a familiar one to many participants in our industrial food system: poor nutrition lacking in fresh fruits and veggies. The researchers recruited 34 healthy young adults with an average age of 28 years old who had no known sleep issues before. The participants were tasked with tagging their food input into an app for 201 days, and wore wrist monitors that tracked their sleep throughout. After analyzing the data from the app and wrist monitors with statistical modeling, the researchers found that sleep quality can improve up to a staggering 16 percent after eating five cups of fruit and vegetables — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's definition of a full day's serving — as compared to a diet that lacks produce. What's more, the effects were effectively instantaneous: sleep improvements took place the very same nights that participants reported eating lots of fruits and vegetables. "It's remarkable that such a meaningful change could be observed within less than 24 hours," explained UChicago sleep expert Esra Tasali said in the school's press release. Though 16 percent may not seem like much, Tasali characterized it as a "highly significant difference." It's possible, per Columbia's statement on the study, that the amino acid tryptophan — the same one cited in anecdata about getting sleepy post-Thanksgiving turkey — might be responsible. Fruits and vegetables contain carbohydrates that help the brain absorb tryptophan, Columbia explains, which in turn helps aid the production of the sleepy hormone melatonin. Though you can purchase synthetic melatonin supplements at the store, it's tastier and healthier to get your brain to produce it for you by eating produce. Five cups may seem a bit daunting, but the researchers insist that eating more fruits and vegetables in general can help you sleep better even if you don't reach that full serving. "People are always asking me if there are things they can eat that will help them sleep better," author Marie-Pierre St-Onge, the director of Columbia's sleep center, said in the school's press release. "Small changes can impact sleep. That is empowering — better rest is within your control." More on sleep: You Can See When Elon Musk Actually Sleeps by Analyzing His Tweets, and It's Terrifying

Erie is second to Syracuse as snowiest U.S. city this winter. What other cities are close?
As the end of winter draws near with the official first day of spring on March 20, Erie and Syracuse, New York are battling to take the Golden Snow Globe title. Erie is no stranger to the Golden Snow Globe national contest, frequently being among the leaders in its population category. The latest totals from shows Erie is just below Syracuse by less than an inch (0.6 inches) on the leaderboard of snowiest U.S. cities through March 6. Erie, which led the race until Thursday's snowfall, has accumulated 109.9 inches this season compared to Syracuse's 110.5 inches. Erie's snowfall amount has been confirmed by the National Weather Service office in Cleveland. The next snowiest cities in the U.S. behind Syracuse and Erie are: Rochester, New York at 84.3 inches. Buffalo, New York at 76.5 inches. Grand Rapids, Michigan at 62.1 inches. Boulder, Colorado at 58.8 inches. The icing on the lake: How frozen is Lake Erie? The National Weather Service says that this winter has been above average by at least 19 inches when it comes to the snowfall total. The average snowfall for Erie around this time of the season is 90.9 inches. Please enable Javascript to view this content. In the winter of 2017-18, Erie won the Golden Snow Globe title, recording 198.5 inches of snow. During that winter Erie finished 1 inch shy of breaking Buffalo's record for snowiest season for a large U.S. city, which it set in 1976-1977 with 199.4 inches of snow. This season Erie is 88.6 inches away from the 2017-18 record and likely won't reach it with the warmer weather around the corner. Neighboring areas including Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Cleveland are below average for their snowfall totals, according to the National Weather Service. Cleveland, Ohio has recorded 33.2 inches for the season, which is below the normal amount of around 53 inches. Buffalo has recorded 76.5 inches so far. Buffalo is just below its average of 82.4 inches at this point in the season. Pittsburgh has recorded 30.4 inches this season. That total is below its normal for the season, which is 37.6 inches. "The big snow total difference between Erie and all of these neighboring cities was due to the snowstorm that Erie saw around Thanksgiving," Karen Clark, meteorologist from the National Weather Service, said. "From Nov. 29 to Dec. 3, Erie saw 34.6 inches of snow." Clark said that some areas in Erie had 4 feet of snow or more during the post-Thanksgiving storm. Clark says that she wouldn't rule out more snow in Erie for the rest of the season. If any snow is left, it is predicted to be not a heavy amount but just a couple of inches. Clark says that warmer weather is ahead for Erie with temperatures next week reaching the upper 50s. More: Water levels in Great Lakes drop throughout winter. When will seasonal rise occur? Expedia Stock Climbs to Highest Level Since 2022 as Travel Booking Flexes Strength
Expedia shares closed at their highest level since February 2022 after the travel-bookings company reported strong earnings in the fourth quarter and announced that it will bring back its dividend in March. The company's stock was the strongest S&P 500 performer during Friday trading, climbing 17%. Its stock has risen for three consecutive days and is up 31% over the past year. Expedia saw double-digit growth in room nights, gross bookings and revenue in the fourth quarter, with earnings beating Wall Street expectations. The company also reported growth in its business-to-business segment. TD Cowen analysts noted that the quarter was Expedia's 'best quarter in memory,' pointing to 'very successful' post-Thanksgiving promotions and improvement in the company's Vrbo business as key growth drivers. Some analysts raised an eyebrow at the company's muted 2025 outlook, which indicated a bookings deceleration in the first quarter. The company said that December promotions may have pulled first-quarter bookings into the fourth quarter.
