Govt to train students in art of manuscript preservation
Panaji: Merging academic learning with heritage conservation, the state directorate of archives will soon launch an initiative to train history students in manuscriptology and palaeography to preserve the state's centuries-old documentary heritage. 'Spanning pre-Portuguese, Portuguese, and post-Liberation eras, the archives house a wealth of documents in diverse scripts and languages — from ancient Devanagari and Modi to Portuguese and Roman scripts — making it fertile ground for this initiative. The initiative will not only help conserve Goa's manuscript wealth, but also offer practical skill-building opportunities to students,' an archives official told TOI . As part of the National Education Policy (NEP), internships are now mandatory in college curricula, and the state archives department is turning this academic requirement into a unique opportunity for history students in Goa. The plan is to start the orientation and training of students by mid-Aug in this academic year. To facilitate this, state govt has already approved the establishment of the Goa State Mission for Manuscripts,' the official said. Under this mission, the archives department will launch an extensive statewide survey to identify manuscripts — some of which may be with private collectors and religious institutions across Goa. Once documented, these manuscripts will be conserved and digitised to make them accessible to future generations. TOI reported on June 18 that under this initiative, the department expects to find literary treasures such as correspondence that was once exchanged between neighbouring kings, freedom fighters, and texts that capture the essence of Goan life through the centuries.

Shirgao stampede: All officers' replies in, action after responses are reviewed
Panaji: State govt has started examining the replies submitted by govt officers in response to show-cause notices issued on the Shirgao Jatra stampede. After the chief secretary examines the replies, they will be placed before govt for necessary action. Six people were killed and 74 injured in the stampede. On May 13, state govt issued show-cause notices to eight officers, including the then North Goa collector Sneha Gitte, the then North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal, the then deputy collector of Bicholim, the then DySP of Bicholim, the PIs of Bicholim (transferred since) and Mopa police stations, and the panchayat secretary of Shirgao. 'All govt officers have submitted their replies. We are examining them,' Goa chief secretary V Candavelou told TOI . These officials were on duty during the tragedy and have since been transferred. Chief minister Pramod Sawant, making the report of the fact-finding committee public, said the report collectively held the temple committee, district administration, district police, village panchayat, and crowd behaviour, particularly that of 'dhonds', responsible for the tragedy. Panaji: The officers who were issued a show-cause notice in connection with the Shirgao Jatra stampede, that killed six and injured 74 persons, were given one more week to file their reply. The officers sought the summary of the inquiry report to file their reply. Chief secretary V Candavelou told TOI , 'We have provided the summary of the inquiry report to the officers who have been issued a show cause notice. We have given them time to file their reply.' In Shirgao, a dedicated road will be built, and staggered timings will be made for the 'dhonds' to go from the temple pond to the 'homkund'. The govt will widen the road before the next jatra, taking locals into confidence, he said. 'To ensure that such a stampede does not take place in Goa in the future, we will take precautions,' Sawant said.

4 on ventilator, 2 critical four days after Shirgao stampede
Panaji: TOI Four days after the Shirgao jatra stampede, four persons continue to be on ventilator support at Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim. Two of them — one in their 40s and the other in their 50s — are said to be critical, as they suffered head injuries with cerebral hypoxia , a condition when the brain doesn't receive enough oxygen even though blood flow is adequate.'They began running a fever on Wednesday and require a higher dose of antibiotics. We have stepped up their antibiotics,' a doctor told. A neurologist regularly examines them for central nervous system functioning. In addition, the two patients also reportedly suffered fractured discharged four persons on Wednesday. The hospital saw 21 admissions, of which six have been discharged. The 15 still undergoing treatment are being looked after by a team of physicians, anaesthetists, and surgeons in the trauma and emergency ward, where a special trauma ICU has been set up.
