Democrats lament 'party drama' and lack of unity as frustrations with DNC grow
Print Close By Hanna Panreck Published June 19, 2025 Some Democrats are frustrated with the Democratic National Committee during a troubled time for the party, citing internal drama and a lack of unity amid multiple resignations within the national party's operation. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., told the Washington Post that there was "more division than unity" within the party. American Federation of Teachers (AFT) chief Randi Weingarten announced her resignation from the DNC on Monday, citing an issue with leadership. Another union leader, Lee Saunders, President of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, also declined to stay on as an at-large member. Dingell said the DNC needed to "do a better job of communicating with members and Democratic electeds and other members of our coalition," because it was "contributing to significant tension right now." DNC CHAIR RIPPED DAVID HOGG OVER PARTY INFIGHTING IN LEAKED MEETING AUDIO: 'REALLY FRUSTRATING' The frustrations were also evident after David Hogg revealed he would not compete in the new Democratic National Committee (DNC) vice-chair elections, which were decided last week. A majority of members voted to hold a new election following backlash over his $20 million pledge to support primary challenges against older House Democrats in safe blue districts he said are "asleep at the wheel," through his outside political action group, Leaders We Deserve. Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., also expressed frustration concerning the turmoil the DNC was causing the party. "You really have to work hard to step in the pile of s--- that they're stepping in," Pocan said of the drama at the DNC. "Like you literally would have to go directly towards a path to step in it, in order to make this be the news coming out of the DNC." Weingarten expressed concern over not "enlarging our tent" in a letter to DNC Chair Ken Martin explaining why she wanted to step down. They want a worker centered agenda with trade schools and support for collective bargaining," Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., told the Post. "They have called for a new generation of leaders. We need to be a big tent party that includes them." Martin told the Washington Post that while others "want to create internal party drama," he was focused on his principles. "I know there is news of that these last few days. I just have to stay focused on my guiding principles and what we are trying to scale up so we can win again," he told the outlet. "I ran and won the race for DNC chair to get the DNC out of DC — because too many people in DC want to point fingers, and play the blame game," Martin told Politico. "They want to win irrelevant arguments, with no strategy involved, but the one strategic thing that makes us relevant is winning elections. I was elected chair to help our party win again, and we are." Print Close URL

Nurul Izzah urges PKR to focus on unity, grassroots engagement before GE16
SEREMBAN, May 20 — Unity within the party is a crucial element in facing future challenges, especially in preparation for the 16th General Election (GE16), said PKR Vice President Nurul Izzah Anwar. She stated that the current focus of all parties is not only to ensure a stable government but also to increase efforts to engage with grassroot members for the party's strength. '...this is the moment we need to focus, not only on ensuring a stable government, but our unity must be a prerequisite before approaching others. 'The spirit of tonight needs to be showcased so that in the next 24 months, all party leaders at the state and branch levels can be seen as a solid front for the party and the government,' she said while speaking at the Negeri Sembilan and Melaka Grassroots Engagement Tour yesterday, which was also attended by PKR Women's Chief Fadhlina Sidek, who is also the Minister of Education. Nurul Izzah said that party unity and the strengthening of grassroots support must emphasize the principle of public concern as the core of the struggle For that purpose, she said that several training sessions under the political academy have been conducted with the Youth Wing (AMK) and the Women's Wing, which need to be coordinated comprehensively. 'As a party in the government, it is our responsibility to train women and young people to be able to translate ideas related to education and employment into tangible implementation,' she said. The PKR 2025-2028 election sees a one-on-one contest for the post of Deputy President between Nurul Izzah and Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, while party President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remains unchallenged. The PKR National Congress, including the AMK and Women's Congresses, are scheduled to take place from May 21 to 24 in Johor Bahru, with polling day set for May 23. — Bernama

‘No division': PKR sec-gen quashes talk of infighting after internal polls
JOHOR BARU, May 14 — PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh has dismissed speculation of divisions within the party following the results of its division-level elections. She said such speculation would not affect preparations for the upcoming PKR national congress, which is set to take place here starting May 22. 'The message of party unity among members was clear based on the nationwide roadshow that I attended before the PKR national congress. 'The spirit of unity among Keadilan (PKR) members is good, there is no signs of division. Hopefully, they can bring the same enthusiasm to the national congress,' she told reporters during a working visit to Jelapang Emas Ventures Sdn Bhd in Kempas today. Fuziah, who is also the deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister, was visiting a factory that packages cooking oil packets. She had earlier been asked to comment on discrepancies raised by some senior PKR members following the recent division-level election results. It was previously reported that several PKR division candidates had submitted objections to the party's central election committee (JPP), expressing dissatisfaction and alleging discrepancies in the results. The results for all 220 PKR divisions nationwide were recently completed and subsequently confirmed and finalised by the party's central leadership council (MPP). Fuziah said PKR had appointed a third-party auditor based overseas to examine the election results, and the findings showed no irregularities. 'I can say that there was no tampering or even compromises made during the election. 'In fact, based on the auditor's result, it showed that the election was following international standards,' she said. On the upcoming PKR national congress, which will be held from May 22 to 24, Fuziah said it would be the largest congress in the party's history. She said about 30,000 delegates were expected to cast their votes this time. 'More than 9,000 delegates will be submitting their physical votes, while some 20,000 delegates would cast their votes online on May 23,' she said.
