Spectrum says Los Angeles-area outage was caused by ‘criminal act of vandalism'

An outage that affected customers across the Los Angeles, Van Nuys and surrounding areas on Sunday morning was allegedly caused by what Spectrum described as a 'criminal act of vandalism,' and the company is now offering a reward for help finding the person responsible. 'Early this morning our fiber optic lines were intentionally cut in Los Angeles due to vandalism,' the internet and cable provider shared in a statement. Spectrum did not immediately specify how many customers were affected by the fiber cuts, but said that the temporary outage affected 'some residents and businesses.' According to the company, 'criminal acts of network vandalism' have become increasingly common within the entire telecommunications industry, mostly because of the price increase for precious metals. 'These acts of vandalism are not only a crime, but also affect our customers, local businesses and potentially emergency services,' Spectrum stated. 'Spectrum's fiber lines do not include any copper.' No arrests have been made in connection with Sunday's incident, according to Spectrum, which said it's working with the Los Angeles Police Department in this investigation. Spectrum added that it's offering a reward of up to $25,000 to eligible individuals who provide credible information that directly leads to the arrest of anyone responsible for vandalizing or stealing network infrastructure. To be eligible, the company said the information has to be provided to Spectrum at 833-404-TIPS (8477) and to the local law enforcement agency with jurisdiction over the crime. Spectrum noted that it will prosecute those who intentionally damage its network. In the meantime, Spectrum said its services in the Los Angeles area are being restored and thanked its customers for their patience. In a statement to KTLA on Monday, the cable provider said it was providing a 'full day credit' to customers whose services were impacted, which would appear on their next bill. Vandalism causes Spectrum outages in Los Angeles and Ventura, company says

Spectrum customers in Los Angeles and Ventura experienced a temporary outage on Sunday after someone cut the company's fiber optic lines. The company is offering a $25,000 reward to find the suspect. It happened early Sunday morning in the Van Nuys neighborhood of LA. Spectrum said telecommunications lines have been a target for vandalism because of the precious metals some companies use. Spectrum fiber optic lines do not contain any copper, according to the company. "These acts of vandalism are not only a crime, but also affect our customers, local businesses and potentially emergency services," Spectrum said in a statement. Spectrum technicians restored service in Ventura earlier this morning. As of Sunday afternoon, crews were still working on restoring services in several areas of Los Angeles. While L.A. law enforcement has dealt with precious metal theft for several years, one of the most notable instances happened after the Eaton Fire. In April, L.A. County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested 15 people for allegedly stealing hundreds of pounds of copper, metal wiring and piping from the remnants of Altadena neighborhoods decimated by the wildfire. "They're happening at all hours of the day, but we believe most of them are occurring at night after the sun goes down," Lt. Ethan Marquez said in April. Anyone with information about the incident can call (833) 404-8477 or their local law enforcement to submit their tip.

Spectrum says fiber optic outage in LA area ‘caused by a criminal act of vandalism'

Internet and cable provider Spectrum has reported outages in Los Angeles are 'caused by a criminal act of vandalism,' according to a company post Sunday on X. The most common user issues have been total blackouts, landline and internet problems, and no signal. The outage has affected neighborhoods surrounding Los Angeles, such as North Hollywood, as well as in the Orange County cities of Anaheim and Santa Ana. More than 25,000 Spectrum users in the Los Angeles area reported issues on which tracks outages. Users self-report to DownDetector, so it may not represent the full scale of outages. Users began reporting issues to DownDetector at 3 a.m. Pacific Time, with more reports spiking around 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Spectrum acknowledged customer concerns at 2:13 p.m. PT in a post on X, saying, 'We are currently working on a Fiber cut affecting the Los Angeles area. We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. Thank you.' Spectrum told CNN in an email that the 'lines were cut due to vandalism in Van Nuys,' which affected services in other parts of Los Angeles and Ventura, California. The company said it expects services to 'continue to be restored this afternoon in Los Angeles' and that services have already been restored in Ventura. Spectrum is currently working with the Los Angeles Police Department, the company said, and is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for tips leading to an arrest. 'Criminal acts of network vandalism have become an issue affecting the entire telecommunications industry, not just Spectrum, largely due to the increase in the price of precious metals,' the company wrote. 'These acts of vandalism are not only a crime, but also affect our customers, local businesses and potentially emergency services. Spectrum's fiber lines do not include any copper.' Customers in Kansas City experienced a similar outage last month, when Spectrum reported two fiber cuts — one that the company credited to a criminal act of vandalism and another caused by a third-party network, which should have provided backup to the Spectrum network, according to local reports. Spectrum had offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the alleged vandals. Spectrum operates in 41 states and serves more than 57 million homes, according to the company's website. This story has been updated with additional content.

What to know about the Spectrum outage in Ventura, LA areas

Spectrum officials blamed vandalism for recent outages that have affected parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Fiber optic lines were intentionally cut in the Van Nuys area early on June 15, according to the cable TV, internet and phone service provider. The downed lines then caused temporary outages for residents and businesses. Spectrum said service had been restored to the Ventura area by 9 a.m. But some residents reported service interruptions throughout the day. Whoever cut the lines may have been looking for copper, according to the company. But Spectrum's fiber optic lines do not include any copper, said Dennis Johnson, a senior communications director. On Sunday, the cut lines had been left on the ground. The company was working with the Los Angeles Police Department regarding the incident and offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest, officials said. As of mid-afternoon, crews were continuing work to restore service in the Los Angeles area. The company asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Spectrum at 833-404-8477.
