How to Take a Screenshot on a Chromebook
If there's one thing we've learned over years of testing new technology at CNET, it's how taking a screenshot differs from device to device and operating system to operating system. This includes Chromebooks and ChromeOS. However, it isn't too difficult to learn and is something you should know how to do. Here are two ways to launch the Screen Capture tool, how to use it and where to find your captures once you take them. Screenshot on a Chromebook with a keyboard shortcut Josh Goldman/CNET To launch the Screen Capture toolbar, you must press a three-key shortcut: Shift+Ctrl+Show Windows. The Show Windows key is up on the keyboard's top row with an icon that looks like a window with two windows stacked behind it. Just press those three and the toolbar will pop up at the bottom of the screen. Also, if you simply want to take a fast shot of your entire screen, as opposed to a specific region or window, you can simply press Ctrl+Show Windows. These Chromebook keyboard shortcuts will work on any model. However, some Chromebooks have a Screen Capture key on the keyboard's top row. Look for a key with a camera icon on it, usually a rectangle with a circle in the center. When pressed it will automatically launch the tool -- no key combo necessary. Screenshot on a Chromebook from Quick Settings A Screen Capture shortcut is right in the settings. Josh Goldman/CNET I have a hard time remembering shortcut keys, so I'm always looking for another option. Luckily, Google added a shortcut button to the Quick Settings panel for screenshots so I never have to think about what keys I need again. On Chrome's Shelf, click on the time to pop up the Quick Settings menu. Just click or tap on Screen Capture and the toolbar will launch. How to use the screenshot toolbar You can take photos of your screen or record a video clip. Josh Goldman/CNET The Screen Capture toolbar not only lets you take screenshots but can be used to capture screen recordings as well. The toggle for going from stills to video is on the far left of the toolbar. To the right of that toggle, you have options to take a full-screen screenshot, a partial screenshot with a specific area you define or a screenshot of a specific window. These work for photos and video. Also, clicking on the settings cog on the toolbar lets you turn on or off the mic while recording your screen, making adding narration to your captures easy. To view what's available, simply press the Everything button (aka the Search key) plus V. Your Chromebook also has a holding spot on the Shelf called Tote. It's where you'll find your most recent screenshots. You can pin files to Tote, too, which means you can keep an important screenshot ready to open without searching for it. Screenshots that are no longer saved on the Clipboard can be found in your files. Just open the Files app on your Chromebook and you'll find your screenshots in the Images folder and screen recordings in the Videos folder.

Apple renames its operating systems
Apple has announced a sweeping change to how it names — or, rather, numbers — its operating systems. Instead of being numbered by how many versions each has had, they are now named based on the year. Well, next year, to be exact. So we have iOS 26 coming to this year's iPhones, and macOS Tahoe 26 for Apple's computers. iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26 complete the set. In future years, the numbers will tick up together, making it easy to figure out if any Apple device is running the latest version of its software or not. The new numbering is a clear simplification of Apple's prior system, which included iOS 18 at the same time as watchOS 11 and visionOS 2. Apple announced the change during the keynote address at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which runs throughout the week. It doesn't come entirely as a surprise; Bloomberg reported in late May that Apple was planning the change.

Xiaomi to follow Apple's footsteps, change the name of its upcoming HyperOS 3
Back in late May, Mark Gurman reported that Apple might change the naming scheme of its operating systems. Instead of iOS 19, for example, the company will launch iOS 26, along with macOS 26, iPadOS 26, etc. The goal is to match the calendar year, avoid confusion, and make it easier to market. Reportedly, Xiaomi wants to do the same with its upcoming HyperOS based on Android 16, so instead of HyperOS 3 this year, we might get HyperOS 26. The system should arrive around October or November, and as we get closer to launch, we will probably know for sure. While this naming scheme is good for the user as it's easier to track the release timeline, it creates issues for the company. For instance, by naming its OS after the calendar year, Xiaomi would have to keep a strict release schedule and not fall behind. Source

Apple is planning a new direction for its OS naming scheme
Apple may be ditching its usual operating system naming scheme in favor of a yearly aligned approach. A recent report from Bloomberg News suggests Apple will align its new operating systems with the upcoming year following its release, similar to the approach of US car releases. This means we'll be getting iOS 26 instead of iOS 19 this fall, with the change most likely to be confirmed at the upcoming Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is set to kick off on June 9. Apple will reportedly take the same approach with its other operating systems, including iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS and visionOS. This move would make Apple's operating systems more consistent and take away any confusion among users and developers. Rumors about Apple's planned big visual overhaul to its operating systems have been coming in for a while. The new reports suggest Apple's new visual identity is internally codenamed Solarium and will arrive across all OSes, including watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. Previous reports suggest this will be the biggest design language overhaul since 2013's iOS 7. iOS is rumored also to gain external display support and a revamped Camera app redesign while iPadOS 26 is expected to get a menu bar similar to the one found in macOS.
