Govt to launch FASTag-based annual car pass for ₹3,000 from August 15

The Union government will introduce a FASTag-based annual pass for private vehicles, priced at ₹3,000, starting August 15, 2025. The move was announced on Wednesday by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari through a post on social media platform X. The pass, meant exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans, will be valid for either one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips—whichever comes first. According to the minister, the annual pass aims to enable uniform toll payment and simplified access across the National Highway network. 'In a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel , we are introducing a FASTag-based Annual Pass priced at ₹3,000, effective from 15th August 2025,' Gadkari wrote on X. — nitin_gadkari (@nitin_gadkari) Activation link to be shared via official portals The facility will be accessible through a dedicated digital link, which will be made available soon on the Rajmarg Yatra mobile application and the official websites of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Gadkari said the initiative is expected to ease traffic congestion and disputes at toll booths by enabling a single, prepaid toll transaction. 'The Annual Pass will enable seamless and cost-effective travel across National Highways throughout the country,' he stated. Response to public concerns on toll proximity The policy also responds to long-standing issues related to the proximity of toll plazas. As per guidelines, toll plazas should not be placed within 60 km of one another. However, deviations from this norm have drawn complaints from road users. Gadkari noted that the annual pass is a response to these concerns and is designed to streamline toll collection processes. 'This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km range and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction,' he said. Expected to ease travel for private vehicle owners The minister added that the objective is to reduce wait times and create a more predictable travel experience on highways. 'By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimising disputes at toll plazas, the Annual Pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners,' Gadkari said. The initiative is part of a broader effort to digitise and modernise road infrastructure services in the country. Further details on operational procedures and implementation timelines are expected to be announced ahead of the August 15 rollout.
