Former teacher who molested 7-year-old student in classroom jailed for 9 months

SINGAPORE: A former Chinese language teacher who touched the inner thigh of his female student, then around seven years old, was given nine months' jail on Friday (Jun 20). The molestation was in 2019 but left a mark on the young girl's mind until she reported it three years later. The 38-year-old Malaysian national and Singapore permanent resident pleaded guilty to a count of aggravated molest of a victim under 14. Both the accused and victim, now 13, cannot be named to protect the latter's identity. According to a past media report, the accused is no longer a teacher. The victim was then a Primary 2 student between seven and eight years old, and the accused was her Chinese language and form teacher. The offence occurred in 2019 when the girl approached the teacher's table to find out the name of a song in the music video he was playing from a laptop. She was in her classroom. Nearing the end of class, the girl stood to the left of the accused to look at the screen while the man sat on the teacher's chair. The man then placed his hand under the girl's skirt and touched her inner thigh for a few seconds, causing the girl to feel uncomfortable. There were no other students at the teacher's table then. She told him that the touch felt "itchy" before joining her classmates for recess. When she was in primary 5, the girl informed her school's vice-principal about the molestation on Apr 28, 2022. Court documents did not describe what led to this moment. A psychiatrist who assessed the victim in April 2023 said that the girl felt "scared and angry" after the incident with suicidal thoughts. "She had recurrent thoughts and flashbacks about the offence. The victim also expressed a fear of males and reported difficulty trusting others, which (the psychiatrist) opined could lead to problems with interpersonal relationships later in life," the prosecution said. The prosecution argued for eight to 10 months' jail, noting how the accused had only pleaded guilty "on the doorstep of trial". The man's lawyer Anil Sandhu described his client as apologetic and informed the court that he is father of three young children. His wife was present for his hearing. District Judge Lim Tse Haw noted how teachers were held in high regard by society and trusted by parents to "impart knowledge and good moral values" in students. "Hence when our teachers breach that sacred trust and instead violate the modesty of our students, they must expect to receive a deterrent sentence, so that a clear message is sent out that society views such serious (offences) with opprobrium," Judge Lim said. He took into account the victim's young age but noted that the touch was fleeting and did not intrude on her private parts.

Jail for man who filmed obscene act with 'close' female friend as she slept

SINGAPORE: He was her close friend for more than a decade. But unbeknown to the woman, the man had been taking photos and videos of himself baring his private parts near her sleeping face, even touching her hair on one occasion. The man, now aged 26, who was her classmate in a higher tertiary institute, had also been taking photos of her cleavage without her consent. The victim, now aged 27, learnt of the incidents only after her friend was reported to the police for walking naked along a corridor. Obscene photos and videos, including those with the victim, were recovered by the police from the accused's mobile phone. The man was sentenced to five months and one week of jail on Tuesday (Jun 3). He pleaded guilty to one charge of molest, with one charge each of voyeurism and appearing nude in a public place taken into consideration for his sentencing. Both the accused and victim cannot be named to protect the latter's identity. The court heard that the pair had been close friends since 2011 and were classmates in a higher tertiary institute at the time of the offences in 2023. While in a classroom on May 11, 2023, the victim had been sleeping with her head laid on a table. The man then exposed his private parts, which he used to touch victim's hair for around 30 seconds. He recorded the act with his mobile phone but stopped when the victim woke up. During a trip to South Korea in April 2023, the accused took photographs of his private parts positioned above the victim's sleeping face. On another occasion, he took a photo of his private parts above her back while giving her a back massage. The accused also attempted to take photos of her chest on three occasions without her knowledge. On Jun 28, 2023, someone lodged a police report against the accused for walking along a common corridor naked. The obscene photos and videos involving the victim were discovered during investigations. When the victim learnt of the acts, she felt disgusted and uncomfortable with her friend. The accused was arrested on Sep 20, 2024. The prosecution argued that the accused should receive a sentence of seven to eight months' jail, citing a high degree of sexual exploitation in the case. Deputy Public Prosecutor Janessa Phua said the accused had exploited the victim at her most vulnerable, when she was asleep, and took advantage of his closeness to the victim to commit the offences.

Therapist, 32, is 'caught red-handed by child's father doing the unthinkable to boy' he was supposed to be help

A 32-year-old in-home behavioral therapist has been accused of molesting an autistic child he was supposed to help. Salvador Armando Arriaga pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of molesting an autistic child in Garden Grove, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office in California. He entered his plea during an arraignment at the West Justice Center in Westminster. Arriaga faces charges of lewd or lascivious acts on a minor younger than 14. He was accused of molesting the boy during a September 18 therapy session in the client's bedroom, while he was employed by Behavioral Health Works in Anaheim. According to prosecutors, Arriaga had provided therapy services to the boy on multiple previous occasions. On the day of the alleged incident, the child's father walked in on the boy in a closet with his pants down, according to prosecutors. He discovered his son in that state when he went to check on him after noticing he could not hear the therapist and child talking. When confronted, Arriaga reportedly attempted to escape through a bedroom window before running out the front door instead. The father immediately contacted police. Prosecutors allege that Arriaga changed his shirt and returned to the residence while officers were present at the scene. Arriaga's defense attorney, Jacqueline Goodman, stated that her client 'is entitled to a fair trial and the presumption of innocence'. 'We are thoroughly investigating and will address all charges in court, where facts, not prejudicial narratives, should prevail,' Goodman told City News Service, as reported by ABC7. Arriaga is currently being held on $1million bail. He could face a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison if convicted. The Garden Grove Police Department is asking anyone with additional information about Arriaga or potential additional victims to contact Detective Sindy Orozco at 714-741-5872 or sindyo@

Teacher claims trial to molesting student in dorm warden's room

The Melaka sessions court allowed Aiezad Asni to post bail at RM9,000 and ordered him to surrender his passport. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : A 38-year-old teacher at an Islamic secondary school in Jasin, Melaka, has been charged with molesting a male student in the dormitory warden's room last week. Aiezad Asni, 38, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Melaka sessions court judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah, Utusan Malaysia reported. Aiezad was charged with committing physical sexual assault on the victim, 15, by rubbing the student's private part for sexual purposes. He is accused of committing the offence at 5am in the dormitory warden's room of the school on May 23. The charge framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 is punishable by up to 20 years in jail and whipping if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Nazrin Ali Rahim did not offer bail but suggested that the court fix the amount at RM30,000 if it wished to grant bail. Nazrin also urged the court to set additional conditions, such as requiring the accused to surrender his passport. Lawyer Farriz Minarwan Basaruddin pleaded for a lower bail amount, saying his client had a family to look after and had been transferred to the district education office since Wednesday. The judge allowed Aiezad to post bail at RM9,000 and imposed the additional conditions requested by the prosecution. She fixed July 15 for case mention.
