Hidden controls in latest QPR beta help Pixel users customize their lock screen clocks
The slider can be found in the updated Wallpaper & style app. Go to Settings > Wallpaper & style > Clock . You'll see the options for changing the look of the lock screen clock along with the slider directly underneath. Swipe your finger across the slider to see the different options you can choose from. The recently released Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 update adds another customization option that is hidden from Pixel users in the beta. This option allows you to choose between a "rounded" or a "sharp" font for the clock. This works only with the default clock. Once again go to Settings > Wallpaper & style > Clock . From the preview image of the default clock, long-press on the clock itself and you will see a notification that says either "Style changed to round" or "Style changed to sharp." Tapping on the clock will continually alternate between the "round" or "sharp" styles. The "sharp" image uses a straight line on the starting and ending points of the numerals while the "round" style uses, well, a rounded line at the spots where a numeral starts and ends. You might find the style of one of the two options more to your liking although it is such a minor customization that most people will prefer just to leave this alone. Now, in the unlikely event that these two lock screen clock customization features have you chomping at the bit to install the beta, I can tell you from personal experience that this is not the type of beta software that will brick your phone or take away your must-have features. Still, it is a beta so you should make sure to back up your data before loading it. You'll need to go to or tap on this link. When the Android Beta for Pixel site loads, tap on the rectangular "View your eligible devices" button. You'll be sent to a page with an image of your Pixel phone. Underneath that image will be a button to press to opt into the Android 16 QPR1 Beta. Tap it and after a few minutes go to Settings > System > Software update > System update . Although Android 16 QPR1 beta 2 does not offer additional customization options on the surface, a user has stumbled upon a hidden feature that lets you further tweak the clock's design. Reddit user als26 discovered the hidden customization feature while trying out the new lock screen clock customization in Android 16 QPR1 beta 2. You can trigger it by tapping the lock screen clock preview in the editor, and it makes a subtle change to the font style. As shown in the attached screenshots, this hidden option switches the clock font from the default 'Rounded' to 'Sharp.' It also shows a toast highlighting the style change and the option to undo with a tap. Like the customization slider, this new option only works with the default lock screen clock, since it's the only one using a 'reactive' font that allows for dynamic adjustment. While more granular sizing options are still missing and it's unclear if other clocks will become 'reactive,' this update signals Google's continued focus on personalization. Google has been slowly drip-feeding us new customization options, and it looks like this year will bring some big upgrades, particularly to the lock screen. Last year, we revealed Google was preparing new ways to customize the lock screen clock. Now, with the latest Android 16 beta released today, some of those customization options are live. With the release of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1, Google has finally introduced the revamped Pixel wallpaper app that we first reported was in development last year. The new version of the 'Wallpaper & style' app refines the UI for changing the lock screen's appearance. It also adds a slider to adjust the clock's weight and width, though this currently only applies to the default clock. Here's a short video showing the Pixel's new clock size customization slider in action in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1: This slider is only available for the default clock because it's the only one using a 'reactive' font that allows for dynamic adjustment. We don't know if Google plans to make other lock screen clocks 'reactive,' but it seems unlikely for some, as it could interfere with their established designs. It's also unfortunate that Google didn't introduce the more granular clock sizing options we spotted last year, as those would have offered even greater customization. Still, we're glad to see Google introduce new customization features to Android, even if this addition is somewhat limited.
