Ontario to provide ice storm recovery funding for businesses, municipalities
Ontario Premier Doug Ford arrives in Barrie, Ont. on Friday, April 4, 2025 to inspect the damage from the ice storm and thank front-line workers and volunteers. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christopher Drost The Ontario government says it's introducing two financial assistance programs to help municipalities and businesses recover from a severe March ice storm. The storm in late March left nearly 400,000 homes and businesses with power outages and damaged property as freezing rain covered parts of Ontario in layers of ice. The province says it will launch two one-time financial assistance programs to help with ice storm recovery, including one to help municipalities pay for emergency response and cleanup costs such as clearing fallen trees. The other program will provide up to $5 million for small businesses, small farms and not-for-profit organizations to pay for storm-related cleanup and essential repairs not covered by private insurance. Related Articles The province did not specify how much money it has set aside for the programs, but said final amounts for business assistance will be based on the number of applicants and eligible costs, while municipal funding will be based on the eligible emergency response and recovery costs. The province says eligible businesses and municipalities will have until Oct. 31 to apply for the funding. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 19, 2025.

After the ice storm: PIE&G funds groups that kept the lights on
Presque Isle Electric & Gas Co-Op has launched a program to aid community organizations that supported residents during the March ice storm, according to a community announcement. The storm, which began in late March, caused extensive damage to Northern Michigan's energy grid, resulting in more than $175 million in damages. PIE&G's entire system was knocked out, affecting more than 35,000 rural homes and businesses across nine counties. All members impacted by the storm have had their power restored, and internet service has been restored to more than 90% of subscribers who lost service due to the ice storm, according to the May 21 announcement. PIE&G is collaborating with local shelters, emergency services, fire departments, food pantries and other community organizations to determine how to best allocate additional funding for the support they provided during the storm. How to submit your community announcements for the Cheboygan Daily Tribune 'At PIE&G, we are dedicated to investing in our communities across Northern Michigan,' Allan Berg, PIE&G CEO, said in the release. 'We partner with local groups doing important community work and so many of these groups rallied together during the recent catastrophic ice storm. Part of our values is being a trusted energy and community partner and supporting those groups and individuals that help the communities we proudly serve.' What you need to know for the final ice storm debris curbside collection
The City of Barrie reminds residents to have their ice storm debris at the curb by Sun., June 1 to guarantee collection one last time. Crews will make the rounds to collect ice storm debris during the week of June 2 to 7. Only storm-related tree debris will be picked up. The City says to help crews, neatly pile brush at the curb avoiding obstructing sidewalks, fire hydrants or roads. For thicker pieces of brush and logs, the City asks they be placed with the freshly-cut ends facing the road. Regular yard waste will continue to be collected as usual for all non-storm-related materials. Meanwhile, brush tipping fees at the landfill site are still being waived until Sat., May 31. The Ferndale Drive North landfill is open Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Travelers heading to northern Michigan may be shocked by damage left by ice storm, DNR says
Over 1,000,000 Michiganders are expected to travel for Memorial Day weekend, with many heading to the northern part of the state. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says people heading there may be shocked at the extensive damage left from the historic ice storm that swept through in March. "Things will look different for people," Beth Fults with the DNR's ice storm response team said. "It was unbelievable, like you really couldn't even take in how much damage there was. It was like somebody just went in and knocked things over. It's just incomprehensible until you see it for yourselves." The severe weather damaged around 3 million acres of land, including over 3,400 miles of roads, 19 state parks, 55 campgrounds, 169 boat access sites and nearly 3,300 miles of trails, according to the DNR. Michigan Department of Natural Resources The agency says every state park and lodging facility is back open after the storm forced temporary closures, though not every trail is back open. "If people go up and those trails are closed, please stay off of the trails. Again, it's not for any other reason than to keep you safe," Fults said. The DNR says that, while it's sad to see so many trees fall, the resulting wood debris will actually enhance the natural habitat for some amphibians and reptiles, including some snakes and turtles. Woodpeckers may also thrive with an abundance of dead trees.
