High-risk sex offender charged in SkyTrain groping, transit police say

Hayden McCorriston was the subject of a public warning by the Vancouver Police Department on April 17, 2025. A 'high-risk sex offender' has been charged with sexual assault after allegedly groping a teenage girl in Surrey earlier this year. Metro Vancouver Transit Police announced Thursday that 30-year-old Hayden McCorriston had been charged with sexual assault in connection to an April 18 incident at Gateway SkyTrain Station. Around 9 p.m. that day, McCorriston allegedly followed a 17-year-old girl off of a train and groped her as she walked along the platform. The suspect then fled the station when the girl approached other passengers for help. At the time of the assault, the Vancouver Police Department had just issued a public warning about McCorriston, saying that he was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breaching the conditions of his release from prison. It was the second warning the VPD had issued about McCorriston in as many days. He was also the subject of a public warning when he was released to a Vancouver halfway house on April 17. According to police, McCorriston had obtained statutory release after serving two-thirds of his three-year, two-month sentence, which he received in 2023 after pleading guilty to five counts of sexual assault, two counts of assault, one count of assault by choking, one count of committing an indecent act, and one count of robbery. In their news release Thursday, transit police said McCorriston remains in custody. 'Everyone has the right to arrive at their transit destination safely, and without the fear of harassment or assault,' said Const. Amanda Steed, in the release. 'Thanks to this young woman's quick thinking, officers were able to conduct investigative steps that identified the suspect and make an arrest.' With files from CTV News Vancouver's Andrew Weichel

Vancouver police search for high-risk offender wanted Canada-wide

Vancouver police are searching for a high-risk offender who is wanted Canada-wide after failing to return to his halfway house. Johnny Walkus, 37, obtained statutory release from prison Thursday and was ordered to live at a halfway house in Vancouver. Police say he left shortly before 1:30 p.m. for a meeting with his parole officer, but didn't show up. Walkus is described as five feet eight inches tall with a heavy build, short black hair, brown eyes and "Johnny Cash" tattooed on his right forearm. He was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt, grey pants and dark shoes. Anyone who sees Walkus or has information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911. The search is one of several incidents this week involving a repeat offender in Vancouver. On Thursday, police sent out a news release saying they had arrested high-risk sex offender Randall Hopley, not long after he was released from prison the same day. Two days before that, on Tuesday, police said the suspect involved in an assault on the Vancouver seawall last month had been released from a medical facility, where he was under supervision, and will be living under house arrest in Vancouver. And on Monday, convicted sex offender Ronald Hartley Duckhorn, 35, was arrested and charged after a woman was attacked by a stranger in a Stanley Park bathroom. The latest charges against him have not been proven in court. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim has called for "concrete action" from the provincial and federal governments around the incidents. "Law enforcement agencies have done their job in identifying suspects and making arrests, but the judicial system is repeatedly letting victims down by allowing those with a high risk to reoffend back into the public," Sim said on Thursday.

High risk sex offender released from prison, expected to live in Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Police Service is informing the public that a convicted sex offender has been released from prison and is expected to live in Winnipeg. Charles (Charlie) Henry Desjarlais, 62, was released from Stony Mountain Institution on Thursday after serving a portion of his sentence for a sexual assault with a weapon conviction. Police note Desjarlais has a history of violent offences, including convictions of rape, armed robbery, sexual interference, and sexual assault. He was convicted in March of 2019 of sexual assault with a weapon and designated a long-term offender. He received a 10-year sentence, as well as a long-term supervision order until November 2039. Upon his release from prison, Desjarlais is expected to live in Winnipeg. Though he has completed some sexual offender treatment in the past, police say he is considered high-risk to reoffend in a sexually violent manner against female adults and children. Officers provided information so members of the public can take appropriate measures to protect themselves; however, any form of vigilante activity or unreasonable conduct against Desjarlais won't be tolerated, police warned. Anyone with information about Desjarlais is asked to call the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit at 431-489-8056. You can also contact the Winnipeg Police Service, your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
