NEW YORK (PIX11) – Assemblymember and mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani revealed he has received death threats in the final days of early voting before Tuesday's Democratic primary in the New York City race for mayor. The NYPD confirmed it has launched a hate crimes investigation after Mamdani's campaign reported four separate voicemails, all making threatening and anti-Muslim statements. More Local News 'Over the next 10 days, you will not be able to turn on your TV, check your mail or watch a video on YouTube without seeing an attack on our movement. There will be lies to stoke fear, suspicion, even hate,' Mamdani said at a recent rally. Mamdani's campaign said he doesn't own a car, but deemed the threat serious enough to bring to police. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State Former Gov. Police Investigate Threats to Mamdani in Mayoral Race's Final Days

The New York Police Department is investigating threats against Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, one of the leading candidates in the city's Democratic mayoral primary. Andrew Epstein, a spokesman for Mr. Mamdani, said he was cooperating with the department's Hate Crimes Task Force after an unidentified man left a string of profane voice mail messages at his district office in recent weeks. One message left Wednesday morning threatened Mr. Mamdani, who is Muslim, and his family. The man called Mr. Mamdani a 'terrorist' who 'is not welcome in New York or America,' according to audio provided by the campaign. Although Mr. Mamdani does not own a car, the caller said he should be careful starting one. 'The violent and specific language of what appears to be a repeat caller is alarming and we are taking every precaution,' Mr. Epstein said in a written statement. 'While this is a sad reality, it is not surprising after millions of dollars have been spent on dehumanizing, Islamophobic rhetoric designed to stoke division and hate.' A police spokesman said there had been no arrests, but that an investigation was continuing. The threats came at a deadly moment for elected officials in the United States. Violence against politicians, judges and other government officials has skyrocketed in recent years. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Republican Rep. Max Miller says he was 'run off the road' by pro-Palestinian protester

Republican Rep. Max Miller of Ohio says he was nearly attacked on Thursday by what he calls an "unhinged, deranged man" who had a Palestinian flag. "The deranged hatred in this country has gotten out of control. Today I was run off the road in Rocky River, and the life of me and my family was threatened by a person who proceeded to show a Palestinian flag before taking off," Miller, who is Jewish, wrote in a social media post. Miller, who served as a reservist in the U.S. Marines and worked as a White House aide in President Donald Trump's first administration before first winning election to Congress in northeastern Ohio in 2022, said that he filed a report with the U.S. Capitol Police as well as with the local police. Rocky River Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital that the incident was reported and that it has launched an investigation but could not offer any more details. "We know who this person is and he will face justice," Miller said."As a Marine, a proud Jewish American and a staunch defender of Israel, I will not hide in the face of this blatant antisemitic violence." Miller, in a video posted to social media, added that "I will continue to fight against antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all other forms of hate." And speaking directly to the person that he said tried to run him off the road, Miller added that if "you have an issue, take it to our office. You want to run me off the road. That's a different story." Cases of antisemitism and hate crimes towards Jewish Americans have surged in recent years, particularly since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, according to a survey last year by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The ADL is an international non-governmental organization founded to combat antisemitism and other forms of

Fans who hung effigy of Vinícius Júnior from a bridge convicted of hate crime in Spain

MADRID (AP) — A Spanish court has convicted four people who hung an effigy of Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior off a highway bridge two years ago, the league said on Monday. The defendants were found guilty of hate crimes after hanging a black figure, with Vinícius' name on it, in the Spanish capital before a Copa del Rey match against rival Atletico Madrid in January 2023. Along with the effigy that was hung by its neck, there was a banner with the words 'Madrid hates Real.' A defendant who disseminated images of the act online was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime, and seven months for threats. The other three defendants were each sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats. The four of them must complete a training program on equal treatment and non-discrimination to have their prison sentences suspended. All were also fined and prohibited from coming within 1,000 meters (3,200 feet) of Vinícius, his residence and Madrid's training center. They also can't get within 1,000 meters of soccer stadiums from four hours before and four hours after matches being organized by the league or the Spanish soccer federation. They were additionally prohibited from having any form of communication with Vinícius for a period of four years from the end of the prison term. Prosecutors had said the four people belonged to a hardcore Atletico fan group that is 'ideologically identified with the extreme right.' All defendants signed a letter of apology addressed to Vinícius, Real Madrid, the Spanish league and the Spanish federation, which led to mitigation for damage reparation. The Spanish league was on the case as a private prosecutor. In May, five Valladolid fans who racially insulted Vinícius in 2022 were found guilty in what the league said at the time was the first ruling in Spain that condemned racist insults in a soccer stadium as a hate crime. Last year, three Valencia fans were handed eight-month prison sentences after pleading guilty to racially insulting Vinícius in a 2023 match, in what had been the first conviction for racism-related cases in professional soccer in Spain, though it was not based on a hate crime. The Valencia fans were convicted of a crime against moral integrity, with the aggravating circumstance of discrimination based on racist motives. ___ AP soccer:

Vinicius Junior abuse: Four found guilty and sentenced after hate crimes and threats targeting Real Madrid forward

Four people have been given suspended prison sentences after being found guilty of hate crimes and abuse targeting Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior. The group were found guilty of hanging an inflatable effigy of Vinicius in a replica shirt over a bridge near Real Madrid's training ground in January 2023, shortly before a Copa del Rey tie against Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu. A large banner reading 'Madrid hates Real' was also put on display. After a complaint was lodged by LaLiga, four arrests were made later in 2023. A court in Madrid then handed down the guilty verdicts on Monday. Three of the defendants were sentenced to 14 months in jail while one was given a 22-month sentence after distributing photos of the act online. They will not serve prison time, however, after all four signed a letter of apology to Vinicius, Real Madrid, LaLiga and the Spanish football federation (RFEF). 'In the ruling, one of the defendants was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime and an additional seven months for making threats, having disseminated images of the act online, thereby amplifying its impact,' LaLiga said in a statement. 'The other three were each sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats. In addition, the first defendant was fined €1,084 and the other three were fined €720, along with additional measures.' These measures include a 1,000 metre restraining order from Vinicius, his home and his workplace, and a ban on approaching football stadiums during LaLiga or RFEF matches. They are also prohibited from contacting the Brazilian international. Real Madrid also issued a statement which read: 'The defendants have acknowledged their actions, expressed their remorse, and publicly apologised. Each of them has been found guilty of a hate crime, and another of threatening Vinicius Jr.' The club said 14 people have now been criminally convicted for racially abusing their players in several stadiums in Spain and on social media. They added: 'Real Madrid, which, along with the player, has acted as a private party in this case and in many others currently underway, will continue working to protect the values of our club and eradicate any racist behaviour in the world of football.' Vinicius has been subjected to racial abuse on several occasions since joining Real. Last summer, three supporters were sentenced to eight months in prison and banned from stadiums for two years after abusing the 22-year-old at Mestalla in 2023. In May, five Real Valladolid supporters who racially abused Vinicius in 2022 were hit with suspended 12-month sentences and significant fines. One month before the effigy was put up, Vinicius had urged LaLiga to ban those found guilty of racist chanting from attending matches.
