ZP builds dining halls in govt schools to serve midday meals

Mysuru: The zilla panchayat of Mysuru is now undertaking the construction of dining halls in govt-run schools to facilitate midday meals. During the 2024-25 financial year, the zilla panchayat approved the construction of dining halls at 32 govt schools across the district under the scheme. The ZP, which successfully developed kitchen halls and kitchen gardens in empty spaces in govt schools, has now taken up the construction of dining halls as an added feature. Such initiatives by the ZP not only play a crucial role in reducing malnutrition among students who benefit from the midday meals scheme, but the vegetables grown in kitchen gardens also improve the quality of education. As the majority of children of farmers and villagers study in govt-run schools, the ZP, which initiated various measures to strengthen govt schools with the construction of compound walls and separate toilets for girls under the MNREGA scheme, is now promoting the Akshara Dasoha Midday Meals scheme. Due to the lack of dining hall facilities, students were squatting and consuming midday meals on verandas, inside their classrooms, in corridors of their schools, or under the trees in their school premises. Now, the construction of dining halls with seating facilities will ease such problems for them. Schools can also utilise the dining halls to conduct special classes or other school work during emergencies, officials said. Utilising the local job card holders registered under the MNREGA scheme in gram panchayat, the ZP not only provides jobs for them but also involves them in the construction of dining halls. Among the 32 dining hall construction projects, the ZP has already completed the construction of such facilities in state-run schools like Magudilu, Gavadagere, Vaddambalu, and Harohalli, which come under Husenapura gram panchayat of Hunsur taluk. It also constructed the same in Kanagalu, Hundimala, Hosakote, Chikkmalali, Udbur, Badaga, Kampalapura, and Uyyamballi in Periyapatna taluk. The ZP spent a total of 84.4 lakh for the construction of all these dining halls and also provided 3,489 mandays of work for job card holders registered in the scheme. The ZP has also taken up the construction of dining halls at a cost of Rs 1.75 lakh. During 2025-26, the ZP has also taken up the construction of dining halls in more than eight village schools in Saligrama, HD Kote, Periyapatna, and Hunsur taluks. It gave instructions to use vitrified tiles for flooring. Speaking to TOI, zilla panchayat chief executive officer S Ukesh Kumar said that the ZP initiated this project of constructing dining halls with the main intention of facilitating midday meals as well as strengthening govt-run schools with such facilities, besides ensuring jobs for MNREGA labourers identified under the scheme. "The construction of such a facility has helped our children to consume midday meals in dining halls as most of them were consuming food under the tree, veranda, corridors, and inside classrooms," said Mahadevaiah, a resident of Hosakempaiahanahundi in T Narasipura taluk.

10 principals, 1 teacher suspended over Class XI paper leak in Assam

Guwahati: In a move against exam malpractices , the Assam education department has suspended 10 principals and a teacher from govt-run schools over their alleged involvement in leaking Class XI question papers, including mathematics, which led to the cancellation of several exams recently. The post-graduate teacher was from a higher secondary school in Goalpara district, who was the centre-in-charge for the HS first-year examination. "We want teachers to maintain integrity and sanctity of exams. Any discrepancy, such as question paper leakage , will not be tolerated," Assam's director of secondary education, Mamata Hojai, who issued the suspension orders told TOI on Monday. Following the leak of the mathematics paper, multiple examinations — except for economics — were cancelled in March. Reports indicate that question papers for education and geography were also leaked. The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) had sent the question papers to schools. "As reported by ASSEB, the packets of many question papers, including that of mathematics, were opened ahead of the exam day by many schools, which disrupted integrity of the examination. The principals, who have been suspended, were centre in-charges, but failed to maintain sanctity of the exam," sources in education department. Among those suspended are principal of Arya Vidyapeeth HS & MP School, Samsuddin Ahmed; principal of Lakhiganj HS School in Dhubri, Mainul Hoque Mondal; and principal in-charge of Rangia Girls HS School, Pradip Kumar Kalita. Rohit Chandra Rabha, principal of Narengkati Higher Secondary School in Sonitpur; Lilamoni Borgohain, principal of Sri Sri Kamalabari Satra HS School in Jorhat; and Sandhya Bezbora, principal of PM Shri Kathiatali HS School in Nagaon were also suspended. Four principals/principal-in-charges from Dhemaji district are: Kabita Chutia, principal in-charge of Bordoloni Senior Secondary School; Pradip Kumar Dutta, principal in-charge Dulimerh HS School; Chakraborty Borgohain of Dhemaji Girls' Senior Secondary School; and Gopiram Doley, principal of Pachim Jonai Senior Secondary School. Himani Dutta, a post-graduate teacher of Baguan HS School in Goalpara, has also been suspended. ASSEB has also withdrawn affiliation from 19 private senior secondary schools suspected of involvement in the leaks. "These institutions are barred from enrolling new students this year," ASSEB secretary Naranarayan Nath said. "Bundles of either maths or some other subject question papers were found open before time while being stocked in the schools from where the school heads have been suspended."

15 orphaned Gajapati students triumph amid adversity

1 2 Berhampur: In an inspiring testament to resilience, 15 orphaned children living in child care institutions in Gajapati district have successfully cleared the High School Certificate (HSC) examination — with one student scoring 82.5%. Among the achievers is Dipal Bhuyan who secured an A2 grade by scoring 495 out of 600 marks. Orphaned after losing her mother earlier and her father, Nila Bhuyan, to a landslide in the aftermath of Cyclone Titli in 2019, Dipal was placed in an orphanage in B Sitapur by the district administration. Subhadra Sabar from Rayagada block earned a B1 grade despite losing her mother in childhood and her father, Surendra Sabar, during Cyclone Titli in 2018. Subhadra and her elder brother Jagannath — now pursuing engineering in Bhubaneswar — were both raised in the same govt-run child care facility under the district's rehabilitation programme. "Of the 15 students, including seven girls, five secured B1 grade with 70–79% marks, another five obtained B2 grade with 60-69%, and four scored above 60%," said district child protection officer Arun Kumar Tripathy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scarlett Johansson, 40, Shows Off Her Real Size In A New Vacation Photos 33 Bridges Undo Berhampur MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy lauded the students' success and urged the administration to provide continued academic support.
